Product Description
Commonly, we think of soil as just a medium to walk above or build upon. If we had the ability to shrink ourselves to the size of a soil particle, we would be amazed at the vibrant life and ever-changing interactions taking place all around us. The activity, physical changes and diverse life forms would overwhelm the senses. Soil moisture fuels this activity. The soil and water dynamic together as one entity is both the introduction and ending of a novel on the living. Where time is a method used to record events, the soil-water dynamic is time. Together, they tell us where we've been and point us in the direction we need to go. Retaining Soil Moisture in the American Southwest is a culmination of the author's extensive interest in soil and water interactions, soil remediation, land application of treated wastes, conservation, air, soil, and water quality issues, and an overall appreciation for improvement for the quality of life. Awareness of the players in the soil-water-plant continuum aids in understanding the processes that either reduce or conserve soil moisture. The dry climate of the American Southwest demands this understanding to ensure that waters which may have taken hundreds to thousands to millions of years to amass are not wiped out in the span of a generation. ... Product Description
The goal of the co-sponsoring utilities (Pennsylvania American Water Company, Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority, and Denver Water), , is to exploit the unique characteristics of WTR for beneficial use. Specifically, the targeted beneficial use is improved P management of agricultural lands by controlling the release of P. The mechanism for this approach is to use metal hydroxides present in WTR to bind P in agricultural soils that have high P levels. The differences in WTRs observed during this research support the recommendation that utilities characterize their WTRs on a seasonal basis due to changes in source water quality or the required level of pretreatment chemicals.Further, utilities that are considering modifying WTR management programs for greater capacity should include the enhanced ability of liquid WTR to bind P as a selection factor. Numerous suggestions for further research are provided. ... Read more

Product Description

Since the late 1990s, megaconferences in the water-related sectors have become regular occurrences. The latest one, in Mexico City, in March 2006, is estimated to have cost a total of $205 million, and had 19,000+ participants. In spite of such huge costs and organizational efforts, not a single water megaconference has ever been seriously evaluated in terms of its overall impacts on the water sector. This book is the first pioneering study to assess the impacts of the megaconferences on water policies, programs and projects at global, regional and national levels. The results are bleak. The evaluation indicated that except for the UN Water Conference, held in Argentina in 1977, the impacts of the subsequent megaconferences have been at best marginal in terms of knowledge generation and application, poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and /or increasing availability of investments funds for the water sector.

Product Description
This book compares existing soil erosion models and determines their suitability for predicting the impacts of global change upon soil erosion. The common datasets used for the evaluation are drawn from both temperate and semi-arid areas; they represent 73 site-years of data from seven sites in three countries. Six field-scale erosion models are evaluated; five of these are continuous-simulation types (GLEAMS, EPIC, CSEP, MEDRUSH and WEPP), the other is event-based (EUROSERM). After an introduction, the results of the model evaluation exercise are presented. Subsequent sections deal with weaknesses or omissions in current modelling approaches, descriptions of specific erosion models, and potential or actual model applications. ... Read more

Product Description
The contamination of soils and groundwater by petroleum is a growing problem, not only for the oil-producing countries. This book describes the possible approaches for preventing such pollution or, if it occurs, for its reclamation. It combines the knowledge and experience of scientists - providing scientific methods - on the one hand, and engineers - to show what is feasible taking costs into account - on the other. For the various approaches and processes, the experimental analysis, computer model development, and field implementation are discussed. Also considered is the migration of petroleum in soils, and its interaction with the soil and with bacteria. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I got what I was looking for
Basically, I bought the book looking for a good and detailed classification of polluting agents, which I got.

Good structure, hard to find these days an actual book, all you get is a collection of papers from various authors, so for you, people, looking for a classical book, or even a lecture book, this is a right choice.

I gave just **** because five you get only after the third edition! ;)

3-0 out of 5 stars Soil, Vadose Zone, and Ground-Water Contamination
I just use this book as a reference on occasion.I really don't like how it is setup or formatted. It does not contain an index which can make it a little difficult if you are trying to specifically find information.I generally go elsewhere if i need information quickly on vadose zone or contamination.I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unless you have had a chance to look at it in person and are sure that it has what you are interested in. ...
