Product Description
This book offers broad, general coverage of the important factors of soil management, updates soil classification terminology and includes recent soil management research findings. Management of soil organic matter is described, along with soil water and soil fertility in terms of getting the highest level of crop productivity without diminishing the soil's productive potential. Treating tropical as well as temperate region crops and discussing the specific soil management problems of each, the material in this book develops a history of erosion and the need for conservation. Erosion control, conservation structures, soil and water pollution are covered, as well as fertilizer use and rotations. Also included are chapters that examine world food problems and possible solutions. ... Read more

From the supplier: A new technique for the estimation of the length and maximum depth of sediment deposition on an alluvial fan during a flood event is presented. It is shown that the new methodology is a good tool for measuring the maximum depth of deposition that occurs when a channel with a steep slope on an alluvial fan must change to a channel with a milder slope. It is also shown that the estimates obtained using this method are conservative.

From the supplier: The use of paratillage and residue management approaches to prevent the erosion of soil and loss of water in summer fallow areas is discussed, using a particular case study undertaken in eastern Washington. The resulting increase in water storage was discernible but its impact on the yields of barley was insignificant. Nevertheless, it is surmised that paratillage and residue management would increase annual cropping in the long run.

From the supplier: The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model was analyzed to assess the uncertainties in predictions. A large number of model responses were generated by assembling a Monte Carlo simulation scheme into WEPP. These responses were then compared to observed data of a semi-arid rangeland watershed. The model's ability to simulate the system was illustrated by the behavior of errors and prediction intervals.

From the supplier: The US Dept. of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has been reassessing and improving its soils database, computer technology and workforce to properly integrate nutrient management into its practice standards. These efforts were done to have an ecosystems approach to resource conservation. Moreover, the SCS is working with researchers and agencies to build an automated multi-tiered process that would analyze agricultural chemical use and the impacts of alternative options.
