3-0 out of 5 stars Careless CD production.
This particular book is specifically for Violin. Therefore, you will not have lyrics, and only the Violin part. However, the only reason I bought this was for the CD.Which sounds ok, however, the track list is not in order, and not properly encoded. So if you play and see a song title, it is not the correct song. So, you you want to play a song, you have to look at a different track number, and then when it plays, it will be the right song in the wrong position, with the wrong song title.Confused? ... Exactly! To end the headache, I literally had to burn the cd, and then in itunes, renamed every track to the correct one, and then put them in the correct order. If you have the patience to do all that, then it's fine. Paperback, and the cd is inside a plastic sleeve inside the cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greta fun!
The best thing about this music book is the CD, which provides all the backing except the piano parts and vocals, so you too can swing like Robbie.

However, the standard needed is above the level of my daughter who this was purchased for! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars clearly the best
Just try to find a clearer, more concise book on music publishing. It's not at there. And while you're at it, pick up a copy of Sky Dog, his biography of Duane Allman. Randy Poe has vast experience in the music business, does his research and presents his topics in a crystal clear style.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is OK ....
It's certainly about music publishing and being a music publisher. Lots of technical information which I didn't know already but perhaps much technical detail. Then again, maybe I should have bought a different book. I don't intend to be a music publisher. I'm a musician and would prefer to avoid this side of the business unless it's essential for me to get into it. I like making and playing music more than I like listening to that of others. Although I read the entire book I didn't enjoy it too much and I don't know how much of it I actually absorbed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Alex Matlin needs to get a life
Actually, I really like and use Mr. Poe's book (personally and as an instructor of a college level music business class).I would give it 4 to 5 stars. However, Mr. Alex Matlin posted the identical review for Mr. Poe's book entitled "Music Publishing, A Songwriter's Guide" on November 2, 2001.Granted, this may be a revised version of the earlier book, but if Mr. Matlin has not read this version (and how could he since the newer book was published in 2006) then how can he honestly review it?A rhetorical question indeed since he cannot.I would guess Mr. Matlin has a conflict with Mr. Poe and must resort to a book review to attempt to exact his revenge. If Mr. Matlin can honestly say that he read the later version of the book and has the same opinion, fine. But until then his review should be removed.By way of disclosure, I do not know Mr. Poe, or any of his relatives, publishers, friends, etc.In other words, I have no reason to defend Mr. Poe other than that I find his books (both of them, as well as Mr. Passman's book referenced by Mr. Matlin in his review) to be valuable resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of the publishing business
I have read several books on music publishing, and this is one of the best and most recent ones. What I particularly like about this book is that it is short, concise and easy to read. There's not a whole lot of legalese in here, just enough that is necessary for each topic. It's in plain english, so it's fairly easy to understand. It's also modern to the extent it addresses digital issues.Overall, a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
I have to totally disagree with the guy who gave the one star review on this book. I have read several books now on songwriting and this is my favorite. I am right now reading Passman's book and it does seem to be very detailed, but this book was far from boring. I know it was not the authors intent, but it has really inspired me towards becoming my own publisher. ... Read more

Product Description
The Unsung Songwriters is dedicated to a period in the history of American music that author Warren VachŽ calls the "Golden Age of Songwriting," and to the men and women who made it great. Contrary to the widely held opinion that most of our hit and standard songs were composed by a handful of top writers--Berlin, Gershwin, Kern, Porter, and Rodgers--the fact is that the vast majority of them were written by relatively unknown composers. Additionally, while the writers who contributed material to the Broadway stage--and to some extent, Hollywood musicals--were able to establish distinguished reputations, the many freelance writers who were responsible for some of our best songs remained unrecognized by the general public. In this definitive reference work to the "unsung songwriters," you will find Al Neiberg, the author of "It's the Talk of the Town"," Frank Perkins, who wrote "Emaline" and "Stars Fell of Alabama"," Maceo Pinkard, the mind behind "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Sugar"," Ralph Rainger, who is responsible for "When a Woman Loves a Man"," Harry Woods for "Try a Little Tenderness"," and J. Fred Coots for "You Go to My Head"," and many more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal, comprehensive, core reference title.
The idea that during the last century of American most "hit"tunes were generated by a relative handful of writers such as IrvingBerlin, George Gershwin, Kern, Porter and Rodgers is a commonmisconception. In fact, American popular music from "Tin PanAlley" creations to Broadway Musical compositions were the work of avast roster of relatively unknown composers who contributed melodies andlyrics ranging from the Broadway stage to the Hollywood sound studio. TheUnsung Songwriters: America's Masters Of Melody is a work of seminalscholarship and exhaustive research which brings a long overlooked and welldeserved recognition to the men and women who created the cultural legacyof the nation (and the world) that is American music. The UnsungSongwriters is a seminal, core title for all professional, academic, andcommunity library music history reference collections. ... Read more
