5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
My 2.5 year old nephew loves this book.I gave it to him to teach him about our vegetable garden. The book helped get him excited about gardening and further his understanding of the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3-year old loves this book
I don't know what it is about this book, but my 3-year old loves it, to the point of crying hysterically when I accidentally returned it to the library recently and a little girl took it home instead, and my son couldn't have it.Disregard the naysayers.I'm now buying the book, so we will always have it on hand. The colors are bright and bold, and the story follows the process of preparing a garden, planting seeds and seedlings, watering the garden, weeding, picking vegetables, and finally cutting things up and making soup.My son loves all things outdoors (leaves, pinecones, rocks, etc.) and he adores this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Everything about this book is great. The illustrations are bright and geometric. The story is engaging and fun. A wonderful book for ages one to four.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all that inspirational
I've read some other Chicken Soup books, and as a runner, was eagerly anticipating this book when I saw it come up on pre-order.I was pretty disappointed in this one.The other Chicken Soup books I read were hard to put down, and I read them quicker than I wanted.I like to read a book like this just a few stories at a time and make them last. But this one was actually hard to pick up.I actually had to make myself read 1 or 2 stories each night before bed, hoping as I got to each new section that I would find the stories more interesting and motivational. But it never did happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Motivational
I am an avid runner and was looking forward to reading this book.It is the first book of the series "chicken soup" that I read.I love the book.It has a variety of different stories from different types of people ranging from the beginner runner to the serious amateur runner to the olympic athlete and the ultra-marathoner.

It is truly inspiring to read about what humans are capable of.It makes me want to go for a run and push my limits a little more every time I read this book.It can also be emotional at times.I have found myself crying about the ending of story while reading at the rink during my son's hockey game.... a little bit embarassing but all the more worth it because it reaches your deepest feelings.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Runner and non-Runners
I have a few friends that have completed marathons and I am in awe. They are toned, disciplined, in shape and overall feel fantastic about themselves and the limits they push their bodies. They are so not like me!!
But for a brief glimpse of time because of the Chicken Soup for the Soul - Runners book...I was able to see what "their" world was like.
Chicken Soup for the Soul books has an incredible way to highlight the very essence of their themes. They are able to illustrate the highs and lows of the life of a runner in this particular case.
While I don't ever see myself becoming a runner (of course, you should never say never)...I was deeply moved by the personal stories of triumph, determination and do-it spirit.
As always...another hit from Chicken Soup for the Soul.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Stories for anyone
Okay so I am not a runner, not even close, but I did think this book was motivating, interesting, and fun to read. The stories are all true stories from elite Olympians to casual joggers, who run great distances, average distances, or are just starting out. There is also a whole chapter on triathlons. Some of the stories include:Runners World's Mark Remy, U.S. National Team marathoner Josh Cox, Amputee Lindsay Nielsen, and a man declared brain dead! These stories really made me realize the dedication some people have and how it is important to do something, for these people it is running.I personally liked reading the stories for the new runners, since they are not to far from the point I am at right now.Overall, I would say this is a good book for anyone in sports since it is inspirational stories of "energy, endurance, and endorphins" all of which athletes face everyday.Whether you are a casual exerciser or sports player or professional, the stories are inspiring.

Best soup cookbook ever! Just be prepared to spend some quality time in the kitchen to get the results u want!

5-0 out of 5 stars one pot meal
I love this cookbook. I have made about 10 soups from it bc after eating the Moroccan butternut squash I ended up making it about 5 times over. I need to move on bc I know there are so many more amazing recipes to make!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price for the Chicken Noodle Soup recipe alone
I decided this winter that I was going to learn to make spectacular soup. I always wanted to be one of those women who could just pop over with some chicken noodle soup for a sick friend or family member. My mom makes great soup just by fiddling around with this and that, but I've never learned the art. Therefore, my soups were always bland since my msg allergy prevents me from throwing in a bouillon cube and calling it a day.

When my family got sick, I decided to try my luck at soup making again, this time with my Daily Soup Cookbook chicken noodle soup recipe (a variation on their chicken matzoh ball soup). Wow, was it ever great - without making any adjustments to the recipe! I went through the trouble of making my own stock (using the Daily Soup recipe with a wonderful technique I learned for broth making from "The Perfect Recipe" by Pam Anderson, which involves sautéing the chicken pieces with onion before simmering them) and then turning that stock into soup. My whole family was making yummy sounds, and they didn't stop when I tried two more recipes, the Beef Barley soup (a variation on their Chicken Barley) and the Winter Minestrone soup. Finally, I had soup that was as good as my mom made!

I made the broth and the soup in the same day, so it was quite time consuming. I would highly recommend making the broth on one day and the soup on another. I don't think the soup would be quite as delicious without homemade broth, but I still think it would be lots better than my previous homemade attempts.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to make really great soup.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love soup and love this book
I love this book and have given it as a gift. Although I knew my way around the kitchen, thanks to The Daily Soup, now I know my way around soup. The book is readable and fun, taking any mysteries out of soup-making and encouraging improvisation. I also like its variety with some simple soups (like Tomato Basil--made surprisingly--without basil) and some more unusual (like Moroccan Chicken Curry with Couscous).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Soup
We've loved almost every soup we've tried. Now that we've learned how to make substitutions (like Swanson's broth as opposed to homemade, etc.), many recipes are very simple AND just as tasty. If you truly love soup, this cookbook is for you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars amazing
this is a very good book for girls. i think its one of the best book ive read. i love the kindle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for elementary students
Like other mothers here, I unsuspectingly ordered this from my 8-yr-old's Scholastic catalog (which contains, among other things, "Corduroy" and "Junie B. Jones," to give an idea of the other offerings).I never thought anything so age-inappropriate would be offered there.I am certain this book is excellent reading for *middle-school* students, who are more emotionally mature and more world-wise and more ready to handle it. An 8-yr-old, however, is not yet ready for the horrors of these real-life stories.I'd suggest its target age range is maybe 12-15.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tweens Review
I have heard so many great things about this book and very few that were bad comments. Many girls are really experiencing these things like getting bras for instance. I read a very funny chapter about a girl who needs a bra but is not at all wanting one and she thinks she needs a training bra but really needs an A cup! I would recommend this book for kids 10 and up because it has some parts that wouldn't be appropriate for kids 9, 8, 7 etc. They are REAL stories about REAL girls that REALLY happened! I recommend that you have you parents read about the parts about stuff like suicide and stuff like that. I love the book so far and even though I'm not done with it I am enjoying it very much! I hope this reveiw was helpful! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook
Knowing how much I enjoy soup, my mother bought this book for me for Christmas a few years ago.I've turned to it time and again for both inspiration when creating my own recipes and for complete recipes. We've made several of the soups in this book. Some of our favorites are the cream of mushroom (my kids can NOT get enough of it!), the shrimp creole, and garlicky lentil soup.Though my husband isn't a big fan of lentils, he's enjoyed many of the soups made with lentils (so long as they aren't the main feature!), since the recipes blend flavors nicely.

If you are new to cooking, this book is an excellent resource. There are pictures of the finished product for every recipe, clear step-by-step instructions, and often small pictures of some of the steps in the process.

Highly recommend - in fact, I'm getting a copy for a friend of mine, who has thoroughly enjoyed some of the soups I've made at her house!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bread Crumbs" Little reminders that we are not alone!
Being the twin sister of a chronically ill person comes with many worries and fears. My sister and I have turned to our faith and have rallied! We ask God for "bread crumbs" often.Bread Crumbs are little coincidences that show us God is listening. This book is filled with stories that will appeal especially to those who have had some hardship in their lives. When reading the stories throughout this book, I am filled with renewed hope and belief!Story 37 was especially touching.Notice also, it refers to psalm 37:5:"Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass"So have faith, if you are reading this review, it is meant to be and you will benefit from reading this book!It was no coincidence, it was your "bread crumb".Terri "Hunter" Ward, author of One Starry Night and Aunt Tami's Strawberry Farm.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dose of Renewal
I would rate this the best of the best of the Chicken Soup books. I have read several of the books in this series and enjoyed them all, but every story in this book touched my heart. As I read these stories I felt a renewed sense of the presence of God and His care. The quotations at the beginning of each story are all very good in themselves. My favorite story is Chapter 9, "Soaring With Eagles". I would reccommend having a box of tissues nearby as you read it though.

The book I am reviewing is Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen by Dyanne Disalvo-Ryan. I gave this book four stars. This book is about people at a soup kitchen. A boy learns how to help from his uncle. There are people who come to eat at a soup kitchen. I would recommend this book to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars astonishingly poignant
Uncle willie and the soup kitchen is a beautiful, wonderful book to read with a child. It presents a young boy and his Uncle willie as he gathers food to prepare at a soup kitchen in which he works. The fact that Uncle Willie considers the denizens his guests, and not moochers or people looking for a handout is deeply moving. No treacly sentiment,no preaching, this is a lovely story which made me cry upopn first reading it.I read it with my kids, and have pressed copies upon others since discovering it in a remainder bin! My first grade class adored it, and it stimulated a great discussion afterwards on hunger poverty and helping.Reaaly very well done.Moving gentle loving, belongs in every library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncle Willie Teaches Compassion
Can a soup kitchen be warm and inviting? It can when Uncle Willie works there.

When his nephew has a day off from school, Uncle Willie invites him to spend the day helping him at the soup kitchen. Although hesitant at first, the young boy discovers, that in Uncle Willie's eyes, that the foodcollected from his neighborhood is not just food, butpreparation for afeast. To Uncle Willie, the soup kitchen visitors aren't strangers. Theyare his guests.

You'll travel with Uncle Willie and he gathers donatedfood throughout the neighborhood. His enthusiasm is so contagious all alongthe way that you'll almost be able to smell the food cooking. Pay carefulattention to the illustrations as every page offers a look into the spiritof the kitchen, who pays a visit, and the inner workings of a successfullyrun organization. You'll find bright posters, a cheery staff, and invitingtable arrangements.

While the book is directed at children aged 4-8,anyone will come away with a positive feeling and enough working knowledgeto get them started in volunteering.

To further discussions on hungerand poverty, you'll want to make sure to read the introduction. It's a goodstarting point for asking your local librarian for help in finding out moreabout the subject. ... Read more

Product Description

When I said I was working on a soup book, the response was often, “Oh, I love soup!” People enthuse about soup in a way that’s so heartwarming it makes me feel as if I’m in the right camp... The soups in this book are based on vegetables, and many of these recipes are new ones for me. But some are soup classics, by which I mean some of those that have stood the test of time in my kitchen, (Quinoa, Corn, and Spinach Chowder) and those that are classics in the culture (Boston-Style Black Bean Soup). I’ve tried to streamlined these dishes as much as possible without sacrificing goodness, so that you can easily enjoy them in your own kitchen. I hope you do enjoy making these soups and add them, one by one, to your repertoire.

—from the Introduction

In Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison’s Kitchen, America’s favorite vegetarian cookbook author presents more than 100 inventive and straightforward soup recipes guaranteed to satisfy appetites all year long.

Deborah Madison has shown millions of Americans how to turn vegetables and other healthful ingredients into culinary triumphs. In her newest collection of recipes, She serves up a selection of soups ranging from stylish first courses to substantial one-bowl meals.

Madison begins with a soup-making primer and streamlined recipes for vegetable stocks and broths (such as the Hearty Mushroom Broth), which serve as the foundation for many of the recipes that follow, for those who wish to make their own.Soups like the Mexican Tomato Broth with Avocado and Lime can start a supper or stand alone as a simple, light meal. Cooks looking for heartier choices will find satisfying dishes such as Potato and Green Chile Stew with Cilantro Cream or grain-based soups like the Wild Rice Chowder. Organized by seasons, the recipes make the most of the produce–from a springtime Fennel and Almond Soup with Saffron and Ricotta Dumplings to a deeply flavorful autumnal Roasted Squash, Pear and Ginger Soup. When time just isn’t available and prepared soups take the place of home made, Madison offers a battery of suggestions for how to make them your own with simple additions from delicious oils and herbs to an invigorating Cilantro Salsa.

Featuring fifty stunning full-color photographs by Laurie Smith, serving suggestions, wine notes, and a host of ideas for creative finishing touches including caramelized pear “croutons” and souffléd cheese toasts, this friendly soup lover's guide gives the reader a hundred delicious ways to enjoy the benefits and flavors of vegetables by the bowlful throughout the seasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Variations on Old Favorites
I've made around 5 soups from this book so far, so I feel like I can truly give a fair review to the book.

Things that I Love:
Great section on Broths/Lighter Soups
Book is organized by Season
Creative recipes with some Great Ideas (Examples: roasting squash, pear and ginger in the oven prior to putting in the soup pot, adding crumbled Feta cheese to a Quinoa, Corn, and Spinach soup)
Writing is entertaining.I've actually read the book from cover to cover.

Things that I'm not a fan of:
Fighting over the leftovers
Just one recipe I've done was disappointing--it was Cauliflower Noodle Soup w/ Saffron. While good, I was disappointed that the saffron taste wasn't highlighted very much.Especially since saffron is sooo freaking expensive.

Overall, I love the recipes in this book--and might try to cook each and every one of them.I already own Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, and felt that this definitely adds to my cookbook repertoire, and didn't find it redundant at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deborah madison a genius!
Making soup is actually a spiritual activity for me.I once brought a friend who had suffered a tragedy out of hysteria with a pot of chicken soup. It sent her back to her mother's Brazilian kitchen.Ever since, I have had a deep respect for 'slow food' and serious attention to the kitchen.

This book has been a mainstay in my culinary library.Deborah's keen attention to detail and deep understanding of vegetarian cuisine produced a wealth of soups.Among my favorites are the Senegalese peanut butter soup, the passato, the tomato and red pepper soup with the little nests.Every soup I have made from this book has turned out well. And I have served up dozens of delicious and satisfying soups and am not yet half way through the book!

I constantly receive appreciative comments.Even better, my friends have started making soup! And taking soup over to families with new babies has become a custom in my community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Creativity
Based on other Amazon reviews I purchased this book.Have checked out the author's other books from the library and new her general style. What I have discovered after having tried three of the recipes is that Deborah Madison has a unique ability to pare unexpected food / flavor combinations for FANTASTIC effect. In a word, she knows how to mix things up!For instance, upon reading the recipe for peanut soup I was totally unconvinced by her statement that this was a "substantial" meal.I was thinking of what to serve with the soup to ensure a filling meal...should have listened to the chef!Somehow, the combination of peanut butter, coconut milk, and tomatoes comes together with her unique seasoning combination for a WONDERFUL FLAVORFUL and FILLING soup...go figure! My only caveat is I think her spice measurements tend to be too small for the amount of liquid...I upped the garlic and some spices on all the recipes I have have tried so far. This is one cookbook WELL worth its price...I will be using this one for years to come. One suggestion for anyone seeking to improve the calibre of their vegetarian cooking:Check out Jeanne Lemlin. She never gained the celebrity status of D.M. or Mollie Katzen, but her recipes are just as creative as Deborah Madison's and I find Jeanne Lemlin's recipes to be foolproof and in need of less tweaking.Vegetarian Classics: 300 Essential and Easy Recipes for Every MealSimple Vegetarian Pleasures

5-0 out of 5 stars A great cookbook even for meat eaters!
I am not a vegetarian, but was given this cookbook as a gift.I had it for nearly a year before I actually cracked it open to try anything.I recently started shopping for fresh produce at a local farmer's market and decided to give this cookbook a try.I have tried quite a few recipe's in this book and worked with some vegetables I've never tasted much less cooked with before. This cookbook was good at explaining what to do, even with some of the lesser known veggies.
Now, I haven't liked all the recipes I've tried, but that is of no fault of the recipe.Rather I have discovered that there are some veggies I just do not like no matter what the recipe. The majority of the recipe's I've tried, however, have been exceptional in taste and many are filling enough to be a main course.I loved this book so much I went out and bought "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone".Just a warning though... most of these soups take some time to make... but it is well worth the effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars love this book!
I have been cooking from this book for a few months and Deborah Madison has quickly become one of my favorite (if not my go-to) cookbook authors. I also have here Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, Local Flavors, and Vegetarian Suppers (all of them will forever have a space on my large cookbook shelves - but hers stay on my counter usually and don't even get put on the bookcase downstairs because I cook from her books most often! I also use her books when I am in a rut and need to some menu planning inspiration).

I have been making the shift to eat more vegetables and whole grains lately and couldn't have done it as deliciously if not for Ms. Madison. When you find an author who creates food with the depth of flavors as she does, and those happen to be flavors that make my taste buds immensely happy, you just buy whatever they publish.

This did not disappoint. The recipes are arranged according to season which I find VERY helpful as I'm trying to eat more seasonally, the photos are gorgeous (though with any cookbook I wish there were photos with every recipe), the photos show soups served up in beautiful pottery, and the recipes that I have tried are very tasty and ones that I would make again. Last night I made the Cheddar and Broccoli Soup and it was wonderful. I am SO looking forward to leftovers for lunch today!

There are wine/beer pairing suggestions for each soup as well. I found this to be helpful and fun!

I look forward to cooking my way through this book! ... Read more

I am a finicky cook. I have very specific requirements when it comes to cookbooks and recipes:I don't like recipes that take too long (if I get tired just reading the list of ingredients, then I know I will not be making that recipe); I don't like recipes that require too many pots and pans and, of course, the recipes must be extremely easy to prepare- impressing everyone around me and making them think that I have just spent hours and hours slaving in the kitchen, when I know that I was lucky enough to find a great recipe book that just makes me look like a wonderful cook!!!!

Well, the Enlightened Soups cookbook is the perfect answer! Its absolutely freezing here in my part of the world, and I can think of nothing better than a wonderfully hot, homemade soup to warm me up.This cookbook offers over 130 different types of soups - each one containing only healthy ingredients and requiring a minimal amount of time in the kitchen.

I love the way the book is sectioned off, either by groups of food such as poultry soups or seafood soups then further broken down by "soups by total time" with the longest taking 60 minutes to make. There is also a handy little section at the back detailing the vegan soups, the low-cal soups, the spring and summer soups, as well as a table of contents with the soups listed alphabetically. This is probably one of the best-referenced cookbooks I have ever used.

As for the recipes themselves? Well, I have not been able to work my way through the entire 135 recipes yet, but I have tried a total of 10 so far and each and every one of the recipes have been wonderfully easy to make and extremely easy to eat!The directions are easy to understand and the ingredients used are common to everyday kitchens.

Soups always make me feel secure and content, and this cookbook is an absolute treasure! The only little thing I would have to mention is that I really like accompanying photos in my cookbooks and this book has a few shots at the beginning of the book but that's it.It would have been nice to have some pictures to go with the actual recipes.

Other than that little comment, I loved this cookbook.Perfect for a cold, wintry day

5-0 out of 5 stars "I live on good soup; not on fine words." (Moliere)

Enlightened Soups is a comprehensive soup cookbook, filled not only with delicious recipes, but a number of relevant details in preparation and selecting ingredients. Grand prize Winner of the Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Showdown, Saulsbury has compiled an excellent selection for even the novice cook, rich, healthy ingredients in both traditional and innovative combinations. The chapters address: Pureed Vegetable Soups, vegetable Soups, Poultry Soups, Seafood Soups, Meat Soups and Legume and Grain Soups. As well, the indexes offer helpful specifics for the harried working cook: Soups by Total Time, Refreshing Soups for Spring and Summer, Vegetable and Vegan Soups, Especially Low Calorie Soups and Especially Low Fat Soups.

I cannot fail to mention that the book's design is especially pleasing and user-friendly, attractive and colorful presentation, concise recipes and nutritional details (calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium and carbohydrates). A thorough introduction by the author yields important information, time-saving suggestions. The author describes homemade soups as "a dose of serenity sipped from a spoon... as comforting as home itself." Each recipe is simple and delicious, "loaded with healthy ingredients", minimizing fat and calories, made in sixty minutes or less, a marrying of country and world, healthy and "home cook friendly". There are helpful tips for preparing these soups, including canned and frozen ingredients, necessary equipment and storage.

But the proof is in the eating, the selections as varied and delicious as any creative cook could want: "Petite Pea Soup"; "Italian Tortellini Soup"; "Sausage Soup"; "Southwestern Black bean and Rice Soup"; "Wild Rice and Corn Soup"; "Gingered Chicken and vegetable Soup"; even "Green Chili Chowder". A bit worse for ear, Enlightened Soups has proven invaluable for its wealth of combinations, healthy ingredients and savory spices. Luan Gaines/2008.

Bestselling author and foremost relationship expert Barbara De Angelis teams up as a coauthor of "Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul", a collection of heartwarming stories about how real people discovered true love with the person of their dreams.

A sweet spoonful of this enchanting Chicken Soup collection will warm the hearts of the romantic readers everywhere.Amazon.com Review
What a good idea all these Chicken Soup for the Soul books are! Instead of reading one book and hunting around for the most touching or uplifting passage, the Soup brigade of editors and writers scours the published world for brief excerpts, arranges them by category, and sells them by the kabillion.

The spoon-size stories in Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul hit the spot and warm the heart. Take the case of Dame Margot Fonteyn, the legendary dancer. She fell madly for Latin lover Roberto Arias at 18 in 1937, but history flung them apart. He recourted her 14 years later, after he'd become Panama's ambassador to the UN. Five assassin's bullets crippled him, but not their romance: he watched from the wings in a stretcher as she took 43 curtain calls in Romeo and Juliet. "I feel it's rather a fair division," she said of their love. "He thinks. I move. You see, I love him." Another love-triumphing-over-paralysis chapter reprints the most stunning passage of Christopher Reeve's Still Me.

The cartoons aren't great, but many of the celebrity quotes in the book are, like this one from Ursula K. Le Guin: "Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new." But one correction: the line "There is only one serious question ... how to make love stay" is from Tom Robbins, not "Tim Robbins." --Tim Appelo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful cookbook
I love this cookbook. My kitchen shelf has so many wonderful vegetarian cookbooks, yet this one stands out. The recipes are easy and the author has explained the process so thoughtfully and beautifully that I had no trouble knowing what do next. The end results are delicious, colorful, creative and elegant. Your guests will think you slaved all day to prepare something so beautiful. The Title is perfect. You will be empowered to prepare a "Beautiful Bowl of Soup".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but some errors
The recipes in this book are quite beautiful, and I like the structure of each recipe. It was also very helpful for tips to make several of the recipes vegan, which is a nice alternative when trying to make a healthier soup.

My qualms:
-Not enough pictures (which seems to be a common theme in the reviews).I've never made soups like this, so it would be nice to know what the finished product looks like.
-Editing errors. At the beginning of the book, there are obvious errors such as sentences that end halfway through and quotes that are repeated, as well as odd formatting marks that were clearly meant to be removed before printing.I'd like a book full of beautiful recipes to look polished.

All-in-all, a good purchase, but I do hope the publishers fix their mistakes for the next printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book of Keeper Recipes
It is tough to find a vegetarian cookbook that doesn't have impossibly exotic ingredients.Mitchell uses a variety of common vegetables, and she explains how to store and use them. The ingredients were very familiar to me, but I would never have considered combining them in such a way or have thought to prepare them that way.Who knew you could do so much with celery leaves!

Ten of the twelve recipes that I've tried have become staples for our diet.My husband and I have already lost 13 pounds each. The hearty and healthful recipes are perfect with a slice of toasted whole grain bread or half of a sandwich. On the weekends, I make two pots of soup and we freeze individual portions for the coming weeks. We each get to choose our favorites. My husband even makes deals with me to get his favorites (French Vegetable, a Ramen soup, carrot cashew, and the cover recipe - Wild Rice and Cranberry).Yum!

I also feel pretty confident in making my own vegetable stock now; there's no need to look at the recipe. If you're looking for a collection of tasty, nutritious, and eye-pleasing recipes, then you've come to the right place.Though I wouldn't say these recipes are quick and simple, they are very doable and worth the moderate effort.Whether you want to entertain or just feed your family, you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for vegetarians only
I am not a vegetarian, although I probably eat a lot less red meat than most people. My review is aimed at those who are not vegetarian and wondering if they should get this book.

If you love good soups, the answer is unambiguously "YES!"

The recipes I've tried so far have been excellent; very interesting and very flavorful.I honestly didn't even notice that it lacked meat.

The Acorn Squash and Fava Bean Stew recipe so far is my favorite. It's pretty amazing how well the different ingredients interact with each other, especially the chard which I've never cooked with before. And the fava beans give you the protein you need to cover for the lack of meat.

Since it's getting into the cold time of year, when soups are just glorious, I love to make batches of soup, freeze the leftovers, and then throughout the work week reheat for a hearty flavorful and warm comfort food.If that sounds like you and you'd like to try some different and tasty soup recipes, this is your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite cookbook
This is my new favorite cookbook. I've had it about a month and now my weekly shopping is 90% based on these recipes. I think other reviews have covered all the salient points: nicely formatted, unusual and delicious recipes, beautiful pictures, etc. I can only add that this is the only cookbook I have that I would describe as fun. Get a squeeze bottle for this one - it's going to be crazy! ... Read more

Because the villagers say there is no food, the travelersdecide to help them by making their magical soup. In the process of makingthe soup, the village learnes that if everyone shares good things can comeout of it.The language and concept is simple for kids. When the travelertalks to the villagers, he uses simple words. "Please ," said oneof the travelers, "we are hungry.Do you care? Will you share?Doyou have any food?" These simple sentences express many ideas aboutsharing."Do you care?" says that if a person doesn't share it'sbecause they don't care. "Do you have any food?" says that if aperson has food they should share it.Stone Soup isn't just good readingthat is imaginative and creative; it also tells a moral, which teaches kidsa lesson but doesn't preach to them. The moral, that if everyone sharesthen the outcome is huge, comes across clearly in this imaginative story. The travelers said the magic ingredient to their stone soup is sharing;every contribution counts from the smallest to the largest when peopleshare. This is a idea kids can use in their lives. The author tells a well-written story that, even without pictures, could put the charactersvividly in one's mind. The author makes a vivid picture of the travelershopelessness in the reader's mind: "...travelers came along. Their coatswere tattered.Their hats were torn.Their dusty shoes had holes in theirsoles."Using these descriptive words helps everyone enjoy thisstory.Susan Gaber illustrated this book. She made the pictures sodetailed that a person can see the hair on a man's beard and the buttons ona kid's top, but not so much detail that it takes away from the story. Thepictures are realistically drawn and colored. There are no purple trees ororange-haired people. This adds to the realistic plot of the story. Gaberdoes a great job drawing difficult items, for example: a kernel of corn anda green bean. The colors that are used are bright. When characters talkthere is a picture of the main topic in the bubble of what the person issaying. An example of this is when a man says he has a potato and thepicture shows a bubble with a potato in it.This helps kids follow thestory. From start to finish, Stone Soup is a page-turner, with colorfullydetailed pictures to its descriptive wording, which bring alive theimaginative story.Stone Soup is well-written for its age group, usingword and concepts kids will understand, while at the same time teachingthem a moral and new ideas about sharing. This is definitely one book tocheck out. -Michele Jicha ... Product Description
Beneath the holy mountain Croagh Patrick, in damp and lovely County Mayo, sits the small, sheltered village of Ballinacroagh. To the exotic Aminpour sisters, Ireland looks like a much-needed safe haven. It has been seven years since Marjan Aminpour fled Iran with her younger sisters, Bahar and Layla, and she hopes that in Ballinacroagh, a land of “crazed sheep and dizzying roads,” they might finally find a home.

From the kitchen of an old pastry shop on Main Mall, the sisters set about creating a Persian oasis. Soon sensuous wafts of cardamom, cinnamon, and saffron float through the streets–an exotic aroma that announces the opening of the Babylon Café, and a shock to a town that generally subsists on boiled cabbage and Guinness served at the local tavern. And it is an affront to the senses of Ballinacroagh’s uncrowned king, Thomas McGuire. After trying to buy the old pastry shop for years and failing, Thomas is enraged to find it occupied–and by foreigners, no less.

But the mysterious, spicy fragrances work their magic on the townsfolk, and soon, business is booming. Marjan is thrilled with the demand for her red lentil soup, abgusht stew, and rosewater baklava–and with the transformation in her sisters. Young Layla finds first love, and even tense, haunted Bahar seems to be less nervous.

And in the stand-up-comedian-turned-priest Father Fergal Mahoney, the gentle, lonely widow Estelle Delmonico, and the headstrong hairdresser Fiona Athey, the sisters find a merry band of supporters against the close-minded opposition of less welcoming villagers stuck in their ways. But the idyll is soon broken when the past rushes back to threaten the Amnipours once more, and the lives they left behind in revolution-era Iran bleed into the present.

Infused with the textures and scents, trials and triumph,s of two distinct cultures, Pomegranate Soup is an infectious novel of magical realism. This richly detailed story, highlighted with delicious recipes, is a delectable journey into the heart of Persian cooking and Irish living. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Where was her editor?
"She could feel droplets of sweat dampen her school uniform and trickle between her breasts, settling in her belly button."(pg.91) Is this really an image I need to experience??? While there are some moments of charm in this book, the author's writing is often torture:at least one overwrought simile per page,so many attempts to make minor characters interesting that I couldn't really tell whom this story is about, and I kept hearing the soundtrack from Chocolat in the background-did we need the tinkers? The recipe gimmick has been done a million times. These are the kind of beginning writer errors my jr.high creative writing students make.I think all the 5 ratings are way too generous.

We received it in a timely manner and were quite pleased with the item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Difference of Iranian and Irish cultures enrich this story
The three Aminpour sisters flee the turmoil of the Islamic Revolution in their native country of Iran. They finally make their way to a small Irish village where they open a café. The quirky characters that make up the town align with either the sisters or the town bully, Thomas McGuire, who would like to put them out of business. The author has included recipes for some Iranian specialties after describing them in detail. The contrast between the sisters' lives in Iran and their new home in Ireland and the difference of cultures enrich this story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iran meets Ireland
I have lived in Ireland and almost always enjoy reading books set there. This one I liked alot and bought for a friend. I enjoyed the story ofbringing Middle Eastern food to a small Irish town. Their (Irish) food isn't real exciting and this would be quite a departure from the norm. Its an interesting twist to a country that has had millions emmigrate to other countries. I had also read the sequel Rosewater and Soda Bread and wanted to know how they got to Ireland. So I already knew about this book before I ordered it. I would appreciate one or two sentences about the contents of books before ordering. Usually I order something I know something about - maybe saw it in a bookstore or have read the author before.

4-0 out of 5 stars I read this book after the sequel
but still really enjoyed it. Whilst I did already know some small details of the story from reading Rosewater and Soda Bread first, the sequel didn't give too much away about what happened in this book. So if you are like me, and worried that you have spoiled this one by reading the wrong one first, don't fret. If you liked the sequel, you will still enjoy this one as well. ... Read more

"Just take a look through these pages, and I believe you'll be ready to take out the soup pot!"Amazon.com Review
Williams-Sonoma, purveyor of choice gourmet products and kitchenware, has also created a collection of succinct yet comprehensive cookbooks. Part of the series, Soup offers 40 all-occasion recipes that reflect the company's signature good taste. Well-chosen formulas for what is surely the world's most satisfying food include classics like Chicken Noodle Soup, Shrimp Bisque, and French Onion Soup; simple soups like Garlic Stracciatella; and dinner-party specialties such as Three-Mushroom Soup with Sherry. Recipes for summer and winter soups like Curried Corn Soup and White Bean, Pasta and Swiss Chard Soup take advantage of seasonal bounty, while a concluding section entirely devoted to chicken soups such as Tortilla Soup with Chicken and Avocado gives readers more of soup in its most comforting form.

Accompanied by color photos that show the soups in all their glory, the global recipes are completely doable, and should appeal to a wide range of cooks. Throughout, sidebars (like "Garlic Croutons") offer useful information on techniques and ingredients; a glossary and basics section are also helpful. Though small in size, the book provides an inclusive store of superior recipes and instruction. --Arthur Boehm ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cookbooks!
I have a huge collection of cookbooks and with most of them I will only use a few of the recipes. This cookbook has stood the test of time and is truly one of my favorites.I have tried the majority of recipes in this book, they are great and easy to follow.I am constantly referring back to them. I am getting pretty well known for my delicious soups thanks to this collection of recipes. As most cooks do, I have changed some of the recipes slightly to suit my taste.I did see a few reviews talking about this being a small book.Yes, it is a small book but packed with great recipes and totally worth it.I have used this book so much that I may have to purchase another one, some of the pages are really worn out which is a sign of a great cookbook. As far as I am concerned this book is an investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars really amazing soups
I never write reviews but this book is soooo good that i felt compelled to tell others who are on the fence about buying it.i love soup and everything that i have made so far has turned out wonderfully.my soups dont really look like the pictures, but the taste is out of this world.i have made butternut squash, clam chowder (this one was good...but not great), tomato soup (phenomenal!i would even say that that recipe alone justifies buying this book), and crab and asparagus soup.the next soup i intend to try is chicken tortilla and i expect awesome results.get this book if you love soup!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Soup
This is a very pretty book. The soup recipes are very good too. We've had two so far and both have been excellant right from the book with no additions. It's a small book with few pages but very well done. I don't have any other books from this series but this would definatly make me want to check them out.

5-0 out of 5 stars great cook book

"Yo Diggity", would be the phrase that comes to mind when I'm searching through my cook books and this one catches my eye. That or "booya". I can't decide. I love soup. A lot. I like making soup too and this book has really good recipes that are easy to follow. For the recipes that call for chicken, beef or vegetable stock,...if you like homemade stock better,(who doesn't) but don't know how to make it,..HAVE NO FEAR! SOUP will teach you. It has recipes for all kinds of soups,..miso, hot and sour, shrimp bisque, chowders,.. all kinds. This book simply excites me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul
Bought it for my Kindle to take along as my meditation book, since they don't have the "Daily Reflections." It's ok. Has OA, GA, and AA, so I have to sort of jump through stuff that I can't relate to, but it's got great stories for all sorts of recovery programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recovery Companion
This book inspires and encourages continued recovery.Highly recommended for those directly and indirectly involved with recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Dear K, I love the book and I'm so glad you were published in it because otherwise I might not have read it. After 18 years of sobriety, I'm still inspired by an individual's story ofaddiction, the necessary desperation that leads to the first step, and their journey to recovery. Although it's the kind of book I might reread, when I'm finished I'll probably pass it on to someone that I think needs to read it and hope it keeps getting passed along until it's worn out. This book won't go out of style. PAP

5-0 out of 5 stars Very encouraging book
I think you can't go wrong with this book. The stories are encouraging and uplifting which is what someone in recovery needs, in my opinion.I've even highlighted pages so that I can go back and re-read what really spoke to me.I'd recommend buying this book in heartbeat.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong.
What a wonderful collection of inspiring pieces from a broad section of the recovering community. Each story offers a glimpse at the challenges faced and how individuals reclaimed what was rightfully theirs - health, happiness and hope. I'd recommend it for anyone entering recovery as well as those who are already living a recovering lifestyle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful.
cooking light books are full of quality reciepes with easy to make mouth watering food. ihave many and enjoy them all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my first choice.
I ordered this book along with Saved by Soup, which I find superior to this one. However, I haven't tried any of the recipes in this book, because Saved by Soup recipes are so good. Just looking thru this book turned me off it somewhat, as the recipes tend to have more ingredients than I care to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Light Soup
I first saw this book at a friend's house.Thought it had many great soup recipes in it so I ordered one for myself.Though I have not created any of the soups yet, I know I will come Fall/Winter.It's a super (no pun intended) little soup book.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I ordered this book because I love to make soup, and I wanted healthy recipes.I have already made the "Turkey Provencal" recipe, which was delicious. There is a wide variety of recipes (seafood, turkey, vegetable, etc.).Also, there is a section in the book for making quick and easy soups, which is great for a weeknight meal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Variety, Quick Preparation, & Delicious
So far I've had this product for a month and everything turns out so nice.My husband is a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy and he has really enjoyed many of the soups as well, as they are filling and tasty!I'm a big fan of all cooking light cookbooks and also purchased their Slow Cooker Recipes book at the same time as this one and it is equally as delicous and quick to prepare. For anyone who likes quick, easy, healthy, or unique - you will enjoy these two books. ...
