Product Description
Cheju Island, Korea's historic island of exile, with a harsh natural environment, early developed a negative image as human habitat. The author challenges this perception and shows how Neo-Confucian state ideology during the Yi dynasty (A.D. 1392-1910) created and conserved the island as a viable habitat by using feng-shui--a powerful medieval science of surveying--to shape the island's built environment and quality of life. The outcome, reflecting sustained political commitment to the philosophical concept of enlightened undervelopment, was a sincere landscape inhabited by a virtuous people. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Expressways in South Korea were originally numbered in order of construction. Since August 24, 2001, they have been numbered in a scheme somewhat similar to that of the Interstate Highway System in the United States, in fact the icons of the highways look similar to the US Interstate icons: * Arterial routes are designated by two-digit route numbers, with north-south routes having odd numbers, and east-west routes having even numbers. Primary routes (i.e. major thoroughfares) have five and zero as their last digits respectively, while lesser (secondary) routes have various final digits. * Branch routes have three-digit route numbers, where the first two digits match the route number of an arterial route. * Belt lines have three-digit route numbers where the first digit matches the respective city's postal code. * Route numbers in the range 70-99 are not used in South Korea and are reserved for designations in the event of Korean reunification. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "South Korea," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have South Korea in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with South Korea when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name South Korea, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

In this ethnography of the everyday life of contemporary Korea, Denise Lett argues that South Korea's contemporary urban middle class not only exhibits upper-class characteristics but also that this reflects a culturally inherited disposition of Koreans to seek high status. Lett shows that Koreans have adapted traditional ways of asserting high status to modern life, and analyzes strategies for claiming high status in terms of occupation, family, lifestyle, education, and marriage.

The Harvard-Hallym Series on Korean Studies, published by the Harvard Council on East Asian Studies, is supported by the Korean Institute of Harvard and Hallym University in Korea. The series is committed to the publication of outstanding new scholarly work on Korea, regardless of discipline, in both the humanities and the social sciences.

Lett's study is solid though not impactful. It was an interesting read and the first work in English that looks at the rise of the urban middle class in Korea.I recommend it for those interested in modern Korea and the influence of economic development on cuture in Korea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both sides of the debate...
I try to read as much as possible about Korea, both North and South.I found this book while working on a research paper and I ended up buying it.
It covers many issues dealing with North/South Korea, but it doesn't only give you a one-sided story. The editors found some of the leading writers/scholars on the topics presented and had compiled opposing view points so that the reader can decide for him/herself.

The topics covered are:
1) Is North Korea a serious threat? (4 articles)
2) What is the State of Democracy in North and South Korea (4 articles)
3) What should US policy be towards North and South Korea? (6 articles)
4) What is the future of North and South Korea (6 articles)

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean, bordered by Japan, South Korea, North Korea and Russia. It is referred to in North Korea as the Korea East Sea and in South Korea as the East Sea. Like the Mediterranean Sea, it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure. There is currently a dispute at the United Nations over its official name. The Sea of Japan is bound by the Russian mainland and Sakhalin island to the north, the Korean Peninsula to the west, and the Japanese islands of Hokkaid?, Honsh?, and Ky?sh? to the east. ... Product Description
The book provides a view of Korea from the geographical perspective, focused on culture.
Contents:

The 21st century is the age of culture, and thus cultural competition will intensify among countries. The internal or regional diversity in a national culture is necessary for a nation to develop its own cultural capability. If Koreans comprehend their own national culture as a mixture of many regional cultures, they will be more prepared to adapt themselves to the process of globalization.

Cultural geography is still not a popular field in Korea. However, Dr. Ryu shows its usefulness here as a tool for seeking a new vision. He adapts his deep experience in cultural geography to Korea's long history of over 5,000 years and its complicated cultural phenomena. He looks forward to seeing widened geographical discussion of Korean culture in the future.

Books about geography usually show areas with their provinces, boundaries or geographical districts, but Dr. Ryu shows Korean landscapes with their religious, folk, linguistic, rural and urban aspects. With this book, you can see many interesting stories of Korean landscapes related to towns, cities, and districts. ... Read more
