The Koreas succeeds in being both comprehensive and substantive, from ancient history to modern table manners.Topics are broken down into logical chunks so that students can use this book almost like an encyclopedia for reports or research projects.The list of references at the end of each section adds considerable value to this resource.Clear black and white photographs give visual support to the information.This is THE go-to book for high school, college, and interested adult readers who want either a strong understanding of a particular topic or a magisterial course in Korean history and culture.

Comprehensive and Concise Introduction of Korean History
As a Korean American, I confess that I knew next to nothing about Korean History. World History textbooks will include China and Japan, but ignore Korea. The only mention of Korea in American History textbooks is the Korean War. Even then, the role of Koreans are marginalized in favor of the United States and China. As a result, Korean Americans are implicitly taught that Korea is an inconsequential nation with no history of value.

"The Koreas" is a comprehensive introduction to the rich and dynamic history of Korea and its people. Instead of sharing a sequential history of Korea, the book is wonderfully organized in content specific areas: Geography, History, Government and Politics, Economy, Society, Culture, and Contemporary Issues. Each section is written in a manner that makes it easy for the reader to compare ancient and recent Korean history. Furthermore, each individual entry is 2-3 pages in length, making the wealth of information much easier to digest.

I believe "The Koreas" is an essential resource for educators, whether they be K-12 teachers or university professors who teach introductory level courses in Asian American History.

I also recommend this book to Korean Americans who want to learn about Korean History. They will walk away with a greater appreciation for their rich & unique heritage.

In 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union decided to temporarily separate Korea into two halves for the purpose of receiving the surrender of Japanese troops in the Korean peninsula. But the temporary division did not end. More than fifty years later, Korea is still divided into two different nations, one following a communist model, with the other attempting to adopt a western democracy model.
Korea thus became a test area for those two dominant systems. Divided Korea: The Politics of Development 1945-1972 is a study concerned with both of the systems under the sponsorship of two different foreign powers, through the efforts of different leadership groups, from the moment of collapse of the Japanese governing body on the Korean peninsula on August 15, 1945 to 1972. In comparing the developments in the two Koreas, the author was especially concerned with the role played by political leaders, the contrasting uses of political tools, the relative influence played by factors both within and without the society, and the contrasting processes of consolidation of power by the newly established political elites and the institutionalization of two distinct systems.

Charming and informative
Chi-hoon could be an 8-year-old girl almost anywhere--she is playful, imaginative, has an occasional disagreement with her older sister, and loves to visit her grandparents.The charm of this book is that we see Seoul, Korea through a young girl's eyes.This book is filled withsnippets of Korean history and culture.We see Chi-hoon struggle to payattention at a piano lesson, go to market with her mother, try to win aschool prize, and play yut, a traditional Korean game, with hergrandparents.In a particularly amusing scene, we see Chi-hoon persuadeher grandfather to buy her cold noodle soup (a Korean specialty) againsther parents' wishes.How many children and parents can identify with thatscenario!:)This is a fantastic book for any age.Even the youngestchildren will enjoy the lovely photographs, and older children and adultswill enjoy re-reading the text which contains gentle references to issuessuch as tremendous academic pressure (Chi-hoon's cousin will remain at homefor an entire year to prepare for college entrance exams), the oldergeneration's bias toward male children, and the age hierarchy (Chi-hoonwishes that she didn't have to call her older sister Oni, a title ofrespect).A must read! ...
