Product Description

This is the first study of a transhumant cattle-raising community in Spain. Transhumance is the seasonal moving of livestock to another region. This book shows the social and economic factors upon which the continued vitality of this mountain village is based: the use of communal summer pastures; the transhumant groups which walk the cattle to the winter pastures over the mountains; and the system of taking turns for many tasks within the village. The book analyses the sharp divisions between the more rigid organization of life within the village, and the organization of life outside the village in the transhumant group which goes to the winter pastures in Extramadura.

Product Description
Britain and Spain are now both members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Community. Yet the tiny strategic peninsula of Gibraltar still acts as the barometer of Anglo-Spanish relations. In this study, the authors chart the course of negotiations over the question of sovereignty since the end of the Second World War. They argue that Gibraltar has played a much more proactive role in relations, and describe the objectives and actions of the Gibraltarians and their claim for self-determination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, informative, and most of all, FUN!
This book about traveling in Spain masks itself as a children's book, but, in reality, it has been a Godsend to adults as well.Ms. Biggs' style is informal, fun, yet highly informative; it will get you where you want to go as well as to more off-the-beaten-track surprises. The drawings are charming, and children, as well as adults, would be well-advised to take this little compendium with them to Spain. Too bad it is out of print.Muir press should reconsider. ... Read more

Product Description

The author's familiarity with debates in both cultural and social studies make this a particularly rich text. It is structured as a series of critical essays, each of which incorporate socio-cultural and historical contexts, while an extensive bibliography allows specifics topics to be followed up in greater detail. The volume brings together key debates in Spanish women's studies, including the emergence of the "new family," party and non-party politics and sexuality, and developments in Spanish feminism. Particularly valuable for specialists are discussions of topics that have yet received little attention within Spain itself, among them prostitution, women and abuse, and the changing role of women in the gypsy community. This is the first full-length study in English of women in today's Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genious in a nutshell
This book is pure genious, focusing on the important issue of nations, identity and borders, specifically the Franco-Spanish border as it was deliniated from the 17th century onward. This is a fascinating account. Most would say that the pyrennes offer an ideal border and they would be correct, but how the nations were able to imprint national idenitities on the clannish localities of the mountains is fascinating reading on a subject most of us would never deighn to think important.A fun and important account, fascinating, ingenious and one of a kind in its originality.

Seth J. Frantzman

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating study of territories and national identities
The Pyrenees boundary between France and Spain began in 1659 as a pretty arbitrary line, but over the course of the next two centuries it was worked out as a national border locally.Sahlins studied the Cerdanya, a valleyin the Pyrenees split between France and Spain, and shows how localismformed national identities that were necessary for delineating theboundary.

According to Sahlins, the changes that took place to form theFrance/Spain boundary were not only a formation of national identity, butalso a change in the governments' views of sovereignty, moving from an ideaof jurisdiction and dominion over subjects, to territorial control.Heshows how policy in the Cerdanya reflected this change from jurisdiction toterritory, the change from frontier land to a true boundary.

Sahlins'book is a fascinating look at what makes a nation, and a microcosmic studyof the formation of the modern nation-state.His study of the Cerdanyagives the book insights, not just into governmental state-building, butalso the construction of identity, the necessity of boundaries for peopleto define themselves in opposition to the other. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Inquisition Spain," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Inquisition Spain in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Inquisition Spain when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Inquisition Spain, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
