Product Description

Laden with garlic, olive oil, and exotic spices like saffron, Spanish cuisine is seductive, passionate and utterly delicious. Say hola!to a new way of cooking — and eating — in this stylish new cookbook from popular chef, Jane Lawson.

• For years, the cuisines of France and Italy have stolen the spotlight from their Mediterranean neighbor, Spain. At last, the rest of the world is discovering what Spaniards from Madrid to Seville have savored for centuries.

Spanish Kitchen is author Lawson’s personal celebration of Spain’s growing reputation as the new center of innovative cuisine in Europe.

• From Tasca (small plates to share) and Cocina (main meals) to Postres (desserts), Lawson has artfully reinvented traditional Spanish dishes with modern flair.

• The food of Spain is meant to be shared. Nibble a tortilla Espanola, savoring its decadent layers of potato; plunge into saffron-scented paella, brimming with seafood and sausage; and dip your spoon into a creamy flan with a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Lawson takes a traditional dish and adds modern innovations
Jane Lawson takes a traditional dish and adds modern innovations, and her SPANISH KITCHEN reflects the new Spanish kitchen idea, so rather than the usual focus on paella, there are dishes here you won't find anywhere else - but based on classics. A 'Seafood Fideula' thus mirrors paella but is made with noodles, and a 'Shrimp Tortillas with Herbed Yogurt' reflects Moorish influences. Color photos and dishes which are surprisingly easy to prepare with familiar ingredients make this a winning pick for any ethnic cookbook collection, while the focus on innovations offers up something different to cooks who already own Spanish cuisine guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my FAVORITE cookbooks!!!
Twenty-five or thirty years ago I found this book in a discount bin at a local grocery store in Chicago.

It was SO BEAUTIFUL, I just couldn't believe I was actually going to walk out of the store with it for practically nothing!(vaguely wondering if I going to be arrested)

In the many years since then, I have made MANY of the scrumpious recipes inside and they have truly become my favorites (some guests still remember them!)

Recently VERY worried that it was lost, I'm looking at it a little more intensely now and just have to share it with others.

I just can't believe this book has a copyright of 1979!

In the restaurant world, so much of this would now be considered creative, original, up-to-date and modern.

(simply delicious, I would say)

The very first thing I made was the festive and scrumptious Pollo Valenciana (Chicken with Saffron Rice) with a rich saffron taste that was definitely not just there for the color!Yummy!

I've never found a recipe so EASY and delicious that could surpass the Gammas Ajillo (Prawns with Garlic).I've made it dozens of times, always to rave reviews.

Flan a la Mexicana (Mexican Caramel Custard) is delicious but truly stunning when made with one of the suggested variations:Chocolate, Pineapple, Almond or Walnut!

Crema de Chocolate Valanciana (Valencian Chocolate Mousse) is especially luxurious when accompanied with Rollos de Amendras Murcianos (Almond Balls) and Mangos con Crema (Cinnamon-y Mangoes with vanilla-rum cream).

Carbonade de Carne (Aragon Pot-roasted Beef), cooked with chocolate and "probably the best in Spain" smells so wonderful on an early fall day, it tempts me to abandon my 'vegetarian plus fish' diet.

Ethnically wonderful (and newly recognized as HEALTHY) Torta de Acheite a la Gallega (Gallacian Cake - a kind of lemon pound cakemade with olive oil instead of butter) is a top favorite.

I could go on and on (and I probably will as I now explore some of the fresh sardine recipes in 2010 and beyond)Our local Mexican grocery actually carries fresh sardines.Another first for me.

I really hope this beautiful book stays in print.

The photos and food-styling are breathtaking, SO warm and inviting with their long shadows, cozy accompaniments and creatively loving details.

YOU MAKE ME HUNGRY!(obviously, you make me feel like cooking something to share, too)

The ONLY thing I would change about this book (and I'm sure not everyone would agree with me) is to change any recipes that call for lard and use olive oil instead (easy to do).

So happy to find it again.

Looking forward to lots more great meals!

(get a copy while you still can)

Product Description
Only 20 years ago almost nobody discussed Spanish cooking.Things have certainly changed. Iberian ham is recognized as the best (and most expensive) in the world. Olive oil, with Spain as the largest European producer, is considered the healthiest and most beneficial of all oils and fats.

And most of all, tapas, those delicious mouth-watering appetizers, originally created to accompany drinks, have made their spectacular entry onto the global food scene. Tapas bars are multiplying everywhere. Tapas comes from the Spanish word tapa, lid, as they were originally served on small plates covered by wine glasses (to keep the flies away). A few slices of Chorizo, served with some olives is how the whole craze started. Undoubtedly, today's tapas are most memorable when served with wines of Jerez. The recipes in this book make it easy to prepare an unforgettable feast for your friends. The recipes allow for variations in quantities, permitting you to adapt your menu to the number of guests. Most recipes here are for traditional tapas. But there are no hard and fast rules.Any dish can become a tapa, when served in small quantity among other delicious tidbits. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars More style than substance
This is a beautiful little book of tapas recipes, with tasteful art direction and lovingly photographed food. However, while it dazzles with presentation, and I enjoyed looking at it, I found the actual selection of recipes lacking. It might be good for a few dinner parties, but after that, you've pretty much exhausted the possibilities.

Perhaps the key is in the title: "Casual Spanish Cooking" - casual being the operative word. If you have a friend who likes to dabble in cooking and appreciates eye-candy, this book would make a great gift.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a real work-horse of a cookbook for tapas and other small Mediterranean dishes, check out Little Foods of the Mediterranean by Clifford A. Wright. With over five times as many recipes as this title, plus a wealth of supplemental info, it won't leave you hungry! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for?
This is the cheapest of the three budget Spanish cookbooks I decided to compare, seeing just how many Tortillas Espanola a gal can fry up for under $5 (for the instructions, not the ingredients, of course)."Let's Eat" is the worst of the lot.First, there's the offensive cover.(I'm not known as Ms. Politically Correct - if anything, I'm easily wearied by PCs.)But the cover drawing, of a grinning, pop-eyed Spaniard who appears to be on speed, is very irritating. If you can get past this guy, you'll find helpful hints on equipment, cooking methods and ingredients.Especially helpful are the hints re:using No. 2 sized eggs and to "follow one set of measurements only."I'm being a little sarcastic about that last tip; it's necessary because the recipes' ingredients list metric amounts first... and while, thankfully, those proportions are followed, after a slash, with U.S. standards., it's one of this book's brow-wrinklers. Recipes like the one for Fried Squid don't even give amounts for the flour or oil to be used. And if you're planning on using this book while traveling, the instructions for various types of ovens ("gas mark 5") might be helpful. If you're going to be staying in the states, however, it's wasted space, and requires careful reading in order not to confuse centigrade with farenheit.I doubt I'd ever try the recipes for quail, chicory or venison, but then, I lived in Andalucia and am more interested in classic Andaluz concoctions.Like the other budget books, "Let's Eat Spanish" doesn't print the dishes' Spanish names, so someone who's just returned from Spain, or a Spanish restaurant, must try and divine whether any of these recipes can recreate the desired gastratory experiences. In its defense, this book gives more recipes than the other two cheapies, including an index, sauce section, andsherry explanation.Ah, maybe that sherry focus explains the rabid-looking cover caricature! This paperback is part of the British "Let's Eat" series, and enticements like the back cover's "Your Spanish holiday on a plate!" refer to the herds of English people who vacation in Spain (and are more likely to like this book).Unfortunately, that contact seems to have fostered a fair amount of condescension - remember Manolo, the waiter who functions as Fawlty Towers's scapegoat? ...
