3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Basic
I found this book to be fairly basic for a review of Spanish. I think that this book was a good book for learning the extreme basics of language. I kind of wish that it had more excercises and practice. I bought this book hope hoping it could help me in my 101 Spanish class, and so far I think I've learned a few things from the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall.
Overall, this is a good book. It covers most of the basic stuff a learner must know in order to communicate with others. The writing style is simple and understandable. I would have prefered some more help with the writing exercises though. I would have liked to be given the opportunity to practicesome more. Overall though, this is a good purchase, and i recommend it to beginners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Detrás del guardián

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice!
This product arrived very quickly and was in perfect condition, brand new, still in the plastic. It was an excellent choice as the story is great, and the reviews and details given on the website were very accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, gut-wrenching story
I love novels written by Galdós, so I wasn't surprised by the beautiful language and descriptions found in this book. What did surprise me, however, was the depth of sadness and despair on Nela's part. I'll never forget this story as it packs quite a punch for the reader. It makes you evaluate your own position in life and how you treat others. Beautiful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars La vision siempre es espiritual, no fisica
What is the actual implication of this fictitious work? Isn't there a serious, profound and truthful lessons in this love story so down-to-earth but yet so complex?

Marianela, a love story published in 1878 portrays a relationship between a blind man and his guide-- not beautiful a woman, whom he imagines attractive.Loving him she worries that once the man recovers his eyesight realizes she is not as pretty as he thinks her to be.

The author wisely crafts an interesting symbolism between the capacity to see, which is always spiritual and emotional, and on the other hand the human eyesight which can be inadequate, restrictive and misleading.

The implication that runs through the whole story is that adversity is a blessing in disguise, since blindness forces him to be humble enough to perceive the beauty she and others manifest.Once he recovers his eyesight and sees her for the first time with his human eyes, he rejects her.

Wasn't he in possession of real sight while blind than when he was able to recover his sight and to humanly see? Isn't Perez Galdos message, that the capacity to see and understand is mental, emotional and not necessarily physical?

Finally I can say this classic must be understood as a lesson on the spiritual superiority over the evidence presented by the human senses. This emotionallycomplex story has a symbolism, it will teach a lesson to whoever is receptive enough to its deeper meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
I must admit that this book didn't pick my interest when I started reading it in My Spanish AP class in high school. Now after reading it I have to say that this book is wonderfully written and very educational.
Marianela is a girl who lives in The Mines of Socartes, she is the guide of a rich boy who suffers fom blindness Pablo. I loved Marianela's character since the first pages, she is so full of life, so innocent. All her life she lived out of the pity of others but it didn't matter to her. Pablo "said" he loved her and she lived in this illusion where she thought that she would finally be loved and not criticized by her looks.
Then, everything changed when Teodoro Golfin, a miracle doctor gave Pablo his sight. That's when everything changed. When Pablo saw what Marianela really looked like,he just started treating her horribly. Where did all his love go? I have to say that by the end of the book I hated Pablo with a passion. How can someone be so cynical as to tell a person how beautiful she is without really seeing the exterior appearance and then being disgusted by what he sees when he looks at how that person really looks? Sadly that's what happens with Pablo and it would have been better if he had stay blind.
This book bring some things that are really important. True beauty is on the inside, never judge someone by their exterior appearace because you might be surprised. True beauty is not something that you can see or touch, beauty has to be felt.
I highly recomend this book, it will touch your heart I promise

5-0 out of 5 stars un libro bello
Pablo, a rich blind boy is madly in love with poor Marianela.Things go smooth until renowned Doctor Teodoro Golfín offers to cure up Pablo's eyes.Marianela, who thinks she is ugly is afraid that when he starts seeing, he'll see how ugly(on the surface) she really is.Her fears are confirmed when he falls for his beautiful cousin Florentina, who doesn't treat Marianela too well. She is so attached to Pablo that if she doesn't look beautiful for him, she won't be any use to him.A very destructive point of view which she sticks to.It's a tragic ending but it's common in most Spanish-language stories. ... Product Description
Spanish literature is one of the major European literatures, with an extensive array of canonical and important writers from the Middle Ages to the present. Because Spain was a crossroads of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic cultures, its cultural traditions weave together issues related to homoerotic practices and beliefs in a particularly complex way. Because literature reflects culture, numerous Spanish authors explore gay and lesbian themes in their writings. This reference includes alphabetically arranged entries for more than 50 Spanish writers whose works treat gay and lesbian themes, including Miguel de Unamuno, Ignatius of Loyola, Federico Garcia Lorca, Juana de la Cruz, and Teresa de Arila. Each entry provides a brief biographical profile, a discussion of gay and lesbian themes in the author's works, and a brief bibliography. The volume also includes entries for several artists active in other media, whose works provide a context for homoeroticism in Spanish culture. The book includes an extensive introductory essay and a bibliography of major studies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It has what it offers
It has what it offers. It has opposites and is a bilingual board book. I just don't like some words. The Spanish Language is a lot more complicated than English and many of the opposites are not the most appropriate. For example, it has "muy pesado" as the opposite of "livianito". That is way to complicated for a little one. Pesado and ligero it's much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics are bilingual too!
It's wonderful to have these classic beginning children's board books available in Spanish as well as English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book for preschoolers
My 3 year old son loved reading Boynton's "Opposites" by himself, so when I saw that it was available in Spanish I did not hesitate to purchase it.

Although I am happy with "Opuestos" overall, I found that a couple of the words used in the book, were not ones that I would have chosen (for instance, "livianito" for "light").This is not to say that the word is incorrect, but as I am from a Castillian Spanish background, it would not be my first choice...The only other "negative" is that if you are familiar with the English version, you will question why the Spanish version has chosen the equivalent of "Awake" and "Asleep" in the text, rather than "Day" and "Night" (my son is so familiar with the English version that when we first came to that page in the Spanish version, he immediatedly said, "Day" and "Night" - I had to explain that the picture could be interpreted to mean both things!).

Overall I would recommend this book for those people interested in having their preschoolers learn some Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any Child's Spanish Library!
This is WONDERFUL. I used it after the lesson on adjectives in my four-year-old's Flip Flop Spanish Workbook, and he was SO excited to hear and see the same Spanish words he had just studied, as well as add some new ones.

It gave me wonderful ideas of how to make flashcards for the adjectives as well, and the sweet silliness went a long way with my 2 and one year old too! A must!

Product Description
In this bilingual story of faith, Don Jacobo has a dream that, in the end, is a reminder that miracles do happen. Jacobo is teaching his visiting grandson Andrés how to become a santero. Christmas is coming, snow is falling in the village, and the two are working on a carving of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers.

The half-finished carving stands in the living room beside the two oxen and the angel that don Jacobo carved earlier in the month. The snow-covered mountains are beautiful, but the road to the village is impassable. Andrés’s parents will not be able to get to the house for the holiday, and Jacobo’s neighbor Leopoldo is desperately ill but cannot get to the hospital.

Then comes Jacobo’s dream; San Isidro is plowing with the two oxen and the angel is helping. "But we don’t plow ’til April" don Jacobo muses upon awakening. "What does it mean?" The night had been bitterly cold and don Jacobo must bundle up to go to the barn to feed his cows and chickens. As he steps outside, he can hardly believe his eyes. The snow-packed road is clear.

Rudolfo Anaya’s story of the power of faith, hope, and love will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. ... Read more

Product Description
This study of 16th and 17th-century Spanish literature focuses on the work of Teresa de la Cruz, Cervantes, Aleman, Gracian, Gongora, Lope de Vega and Calderon. The volume has three broad aims: first, to argue the case for standing by literature courses in modern language departments; second, to continue the work of applying to the Golden Age texts the theories and practice of post-structuralism, and third, to re-affirm the historical and cultural importance of a period of Spanish civilization in danger of being eclipsed by obsession with the ultra-modern or the ultra-practical. In discussing the work of the included writers the contributors raise questions about gender and autobiography, redefinitions of the author's voice as it struggles for authenticity in the criss-cross codes of individual and collective inspiration, deconstruction of narrative contexts, notions of spectatorship and subjectivity, and discourses of power. The book's main readership is intended to be Hispanist teachers and students of Spanish literature in higher education. ... Read more

Product Description
The legends of the holy harlots, Thaïs and Pelagia, are two of the most controversial accounts of female sanctity to have circulated in Spain during the Middle Ages. In this book, which reviews the origin and development of their cults, the author reconsiders the relationships that have traditionally been thought to exist between them and three of the other so-called prostitute saints: Mary Magdalene, Mary of Egypt, and Mary the niece of Abraham. This is accompanied by an evaluation of the five Castilian versions of the two legends and their Latin sources, followed by a reading of their thematic and structural significance, with particular emphasis paid to the ways in which the two women renounce their sins and embark on the slow and agonizing path of redemption. The book is completed by critical editions of the five Castilian versions. ... Read more

Product Description

In eighteenth-century Spain, just as in Britain and France, the term "Enlightenment" implied both a spirit of criticism and the dissemination of new scientific and philosophical modes of thought. But in Spain this new way of thinking also required the incorporation of ancient epistemologies, in particular practices and ideas concerning the healing, training, and experience of the body. In Embodying Enlightenment, Rebecca Haidt investigates this distinctly Spanish fascination with the cultural construction of bodies during the Enlightenment, particularly masculine bodies. Haidt interlaces a host of disciplines in her analysis of key works of eighteenth-century literature and art, including medical treatises, visual imagery, poetry, and erotica. She then traces the classical knowledge that informed the literature of the gendered, medicalized, and politicized male body in eighteenth-century Spanish culture. What results is an original and revealing study of the body in Spanish culture and thought, and a new look at the Spanish Enlightenment from a very unique angle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Concept and Great Illustration
Niece was 3 when I gave this to her. She was in a spanish immersion program. This book was perfect for her.
She is now 4 years old, and can read it on her own.

3-0 out of 5 stars smaller than I expected
This is much smaller than I expected and basically looks like a baby's board book. The drawings are good and I like the phrases they used (rather than just giving vocabulary with no clue how to use it in various sentences). This is a fine book, but for the price I thought I was getting something bigger. The book measures 4 inches by 6 inches.Quite small.I'm not sure why they used board book pages when this is obviously not for a baby. The content is for a pre-schooler.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pics over words
This book has beautiful, realistic illustrations. The little children I showed it to wanted to match them to real fruits and vegetables and/or pretended to take a bite right off the page!I thought the bilingual text would be more helpful; the English (which is my native language) was pretty unimaginative; the Spanish did not use the common words for the foods in a few instances (e.g. maize was used for corn in Spanish, but the picture showed corn on the cob, which is called elota (sp?) by the Mexican families I know).

5-0 out of 5 stars Fruits and Vegetables
The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren't the same. It did not just say "these are bananas, these are tomatoes" all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume, which includes essays on Catalonia, the Basque country, Galicia, and literature written by African immigrants, focuses on issues of "difference" that are at the center of current debates in Spain and elsewhere--the emergence of minoritized literatures, multilingualism and identity, new relationships between culture and institutions, the negotiation of historical memories, the connections between migrations and the redefinition of nationhood, and the impact of global trends on local symbolic systems. ...
