5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful experience...
"Antología de la literatura fantástica" delivers exactly what the title promises: a selection of short stories with something in common, fantasy. But what is "fantasy"?. The dictionary says that it is "fiction characterized by highly fanciful or supernatural elements", but I think that it is also literature that amazes and bewilders us, freeing the reader from reality and introducing him to other worlds, other possibilities...

The selection of the short stories included in "Antología de la literatura fantástica" was made by Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo, three well-known argentinian writers that somehow managed to choose the perfect stories that enabled them to give the reader a good idea of what fantasy is really about. Some of the authors included in this selection are Thomas Carlyle, Julio Cortázar, G. K. Chesterton, Chuang Tzu, James Joyce, F. Kafka, Guy de Maupassant, Giovanni Papini, E. A. Poe, Saki, F. Rabelais, A. B. Casares, J. L. Borges, S. Ocampo and H. G. Wells.

I really enjoyed this book, and I specially appreciated the fact that it comprises stories written by different authors, because that didn't allow me to get bored. Each author has his distinctive style, and a different way of charming the reader, but all achieve just that. On the whole, reading this book was a wonderful experience, and I can recommend it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars outdated? not anymore
We try to be an eco-concious family so the cloth diaper illustrations actually suits my daughters experience since that is what she uses now in 2008. She is 15 month and we started to read this book 2 weeks ago. She loves the book and spends time by herself flipping the pages. She also grabs the book for us to read it to her. In this this 2 weeks she is already familiar with the potty (bacinica) even though we have a totally different one. Don't under estimate your child, you'll be amaze at the connections they are making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Spanish-speaking caregivers!
I bought this book for my 18 month old son.We have been introducing him to the potty and he has the book in English--every time I say, "It's time to go to the potty!" he runs to find the book and then sits and turns the pages, pointing out and naming all the parts of the little boy's body. (So it's obviously great in English too:) My son goes to a babysitter who speaks almost no English, and so I try to pick up the books he has in English, in Spanish.I couldn't find this one in any store in NYC--strange, I thought--so I just ordered it and it came promptly and he is using the potty at the babysitter's now, too!

3-0 out of 5 stars A "potty classic", but too abstract.
I think this is a cute, clever book, but it's a little abstract. The "chamber pot" that he uses as a potty looks nothing like today's potty chairs or toilets, so I'm not sure my child ever made the connection. (Especially since half of the book talks about "Is it a hat? Is it a flower vase? etc") There are other, more modern, books out there that I think gets kids' attention more.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best Spanish book ever.
The book is a fantastic and fun book to read. It will help others who are learning Spanish and it helps me too. Spanish is one of my most favorite languages.
My favorite pages are 44-45. Two other of my favorite pages are 36-37.This book is a interesting and easy way to learn Spanish.I love it!
Johnny, age 10.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures, interesting book
I purchased this book for my three year old.She loves the pictures and we play find-it type games with them (ala - Waldo). The only real downfall is that while the Spanish words for many of the items in the picture are around the edges of each page, no pronunciation is included.I'm sure that's no big deal for parents who already speak Spanish, but unfortunately, I cannot read the words to my daughter since I don't know the Spanish rules for pronunciation.Sure, you can go to the internet and after typing in the page number and going through several clicks, hear a single sound clip of the word. That doesn't help me at bedtime, though.I would love to see a phonetic pronunciation under each word. Then, we'd be set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Friendly, and Factual
Tired of boring and bland spanish tools? This book is bursting with vivid, whimsical, illustrations depicting everyday life with humor and clarity that will attract even beginning adult students. The apealing story type pictures not only define spanish words, but they also promote spanish interaction between reader and child or student with student. On "la cocina" page, a father washes dises amidst a swirling pandemonium of dropping dishes, spilt juice, and a todler with a pot on his head. A teacher or parent could easily springboard off of this illustration to begin to form whole sentences based on the action in the picture.

This intriguing book is sure to be a winner with you and children alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish for a missions trip
This book really helped me work on my pronunciation and vocabulary for a mission trip I took to Mexico in early January.I plan on passing it on to my daughter as she gets older...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as one's primary resource to learn Spanish
There are pictures with the corresponding Spanish definition but the literal English translation is not included.I find this to be a bit challenging for some of the items as there can be multiple English words referring to a single object and without the exact English translation you aren't sure. For example, there is a picture of a 3 drawer dresser defined as comoda. In English this could be nightstand, dresser, bureau...Also some of the pictures are difficult to distinguish. One page has a picture of a sheet and of a pillow and they look almost identical. ... Product Description
The monster is a key figure in Spanish early modern cultural production, both literary and artistic. It embodies a revolutionary fictional discourse that reflects violence and ugliness, but also freedom and spectacle. Minana focuses on three of Miguel de Cervantes' most representative works. Employing both close readings and monster theory, Minana argues that Cervantes' protagonists--as well as the very discourse that forges them--are monstrous: extreme, beyond the norm, threatening and threatened, spectacular, and fluid in identity, form, and behavior. As extraordinary beings that test the limits of identity and narrative, Minana argues, Cervantine talking monsters ultimately reveal the interpretive and discursive nature of the modern subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for developing bilingual students!
I am a first grade teacher, working with students who speak Spanish at home, but are learning English, and learning in English at school. My students are just beginning to develop their English vocabulary, so it is difficult to teach them letter sounds. If I show them a picture of cat, and say "C is for Cat," they get confused and think "C is for Gato".As a result, we have been talking a lot about "magic words," words that begin with similar sounds in English and Spanish.I can tell them "C is for Car," and even if they think "C is for Carro," they are still able to learn the correct letter/sound correspondence. This book is useful because it includes these "magic words" for each letter of the alphabet. As another reviewer commented, some of the words are sort of strange, ("W is for Washington"?).But, for the most part, this book is very useful for children who are just beginning to develop a vocabulary in English or Spanish, yet need to develop an understanding of the letter/sound correspondence in either language.I would recommend this book for any students (pre-school through 3rd grade) who need to develop literacy skills in English, but have a stronger Spanish vocabulary (or vice versa).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book for teaching both English and Spanish alphabet. The did a good job at selecting matching pictures to the letters in both languages. There are a couple that just could have been better.Like the letter "w" the image is of a quarter and the word is "washington".A bit confusing. So I just tell my son that its a president George Washington on the quarter. Also, it omitted the "rr".Otherwise the book is great. I would definitely buy it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to teach your child Spanish...
I have purchased several Spanish books on Amazon and as always make many of my purchases based on the reviews of those who have gone before me. My daughter is trying to teach my granddaughter how to speak Spanish and she loved this book. Of course she loved sucking on the corners too but it was colorful, well planned out and joyful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attractive Book
This is a colorful book, and my 4-year-old daughter likes it a lot.She carefully repeats the Spanish words after me.The only draw-back is that there is no pronounciation guide, so the grown-up needs to know their Spanish alphabet already.

1-0 out of 5 stars W is for Washington?
Before I begin my critique, I must say that my three kids have all enjoyed hearing this book at the appropriate age. The illustrations, by Michele Noiset, are bright, clear, fun, and functional. Most of the items depicted in this ABC book are interesting and/or familiar to young children (train, ocean, juice).

BUT there are inherent difficulties in portraying ABC-linked items in English and Spanish. What do I mean? Well, Spanish has very few, if any, words that begin with "W". So, in this book, the "W" page has a 1978 George Washington quarter for its illustration. What USEFUL word do our aspiring bilinguists learn from this page? "Washington". Similarly, "Y" is for "yo-yo" in both languages, and 'R' is for "robot". As far as I'm concerned, this is "lame/lamé".

The next difficulty (closely related to the first) is that español has three more "letters" than English has: "ch" ("chay), "ll" ("el-yay"), and "ñ" ("en-nyay"). Fact is, NO English-only words begin with these "letters". That means that this book gives us "chimpanzee" (spelled identically in both languages), "llama" (fine, but there's no pronunciation guide to distinguish between the two), and "ñandu", which the authors and editors had to acquiesce, has no English equivalent. (It's a an emu-sort-of thing.)

I wouldn't bother with this book unless you get it practically free. There are many better ABC books and there are many better (i.e. more educational) English-Spanish/español/inglés books on the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the very young
I really like how simple this book is. The photos, rather than cartoons, really hold my children's and my students' interest, and they have fun just pointing and listening as I say the words. If you're not familiar with Spanish pronunciation, though, be careful, there's no phonetic spelling... so get a good guide along side with this if this is your first introduction to Spanish.
Another HUGE pro is how heavy the pages are. They are even heavier than cardboard, and nice and slick, and so far have lasted through five years of weekly Spanish students, as well as my own four children!

Few events have stirred the emotions and caught the imaginations of intellectuals as did the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. The Spanish Civil War in Literature examines the diverse literatures that the war inspired: a literature relating directly to the war, a literature of exile arising from the forty-year dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and a polemical literature embracing pro-Franco and Loyalist sympathies.

In this book, specialists from a variety of fields explore these literatures within comparative and interdisciplinary frameworks. They reflect upon film, poetry, novels, painting, discourse, biography, and propaganda. The essays are grouped according to the original languages of the works they discuss--French, Russian, English, and Spanish. ... Read more

The essential dictionary for any child learning English or Spanish as a second language.

With 12,000 terms in each language and 2,000 illustrations covering more than 500 topics, The Firefly Spanish/English Junior Visual Dictionary shows what other bilingual dictionaries just cannot -- words translated as labels on computer-generated color illustrations. The topics cover a broad range -- everything from an airport layout to the human circulatory system, from electricity to the parts of a shoe.

The dictionary is organized into 22 color-coded themes that include, among others, astronomy, geography, the animal and plant kingdoms, the environment, the human being, food, science, transportation and machinery, the arts, and sports.

Each key word or phrase is connected to a detailed illustration, making identification quick and accurate. The Spanish term is identified by gender, helping the reader with correct usage.
