Product Description
Faced with the apparent inability of her autistic son Billy to learn and socialize with other children at school, Olga Holland decided to teach him at home.Where traditional educational approaches had produced limited results, the author's own method of teaching succeeded, over a period of two years, in enabling Billy to pass the test that allowed him to enter a class for gifted children.Teaching at Home explains the author's approach, focused on adapting to the demands of Billy's atypical mind and respecting his vivid imaginative world while attracting and retaining his attention. The author describes her use of sensory and memory techniques, social stories and humour, and gives useful advice on issues such as understanding body language, adapting the teaching environment, devising homework schedules and coping with distractions. This book offers inspiration and encouragement for parents of children with autism or Asperger Syndrome who are considering homeschooling their children, and also provides useful pointers for teachers and carers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review
I haven't actually read this, but I am the author's daughter.I would just like to say to reviewer below that it may not have worked for your needs because many cases of autism and asperger's are quite unique, and advice that is wonderful for some children may be completely wrong for others. While Mom did her best to make it applicable to many situations, it's just fact a fact of life that it might not work. Thanks for buying it, though, and good luck finding a different guidebook :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not your first choice. . .
Although this book did have some good information - I did not find anything completly invaluable. As a mother with Asperger's who is homeschooling my son who also has Asperger's I found her conclusions to her son's behavior misguided.I would not advice purchasing this book as your first guide to homeschooling your child with Asperger's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for parents and fun for kids
As a parent educator and a mom of 2 kids with cystic fibrosis, I can't say enough about this book and the whole series in fact (there is one for diabetes, asthma and many other conditions). Young children learn best from pictures and the artwork in this is great. There is nothing "scary" in it about having CF, it is informative, matter-of-fact and hopeful.

My own two children (with CF) loved it when they were younger and received a black and white version from the CF clinic as a coloring book. I highly recommend it for younger children with CF and their siblings.

For a parenting book about how to raise kids who have CF and other health issues, see: Parenting Children With Health Issues: Essential Tools, Tips, and Tactics for Raising Kids With Chronic Illness, Medical Conditions, and Special Healthcare Needs

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and a great read for kids
This book is terrific. It is great for any child that is in the beginning years of school. It educates the reader about cystic fibrosis and assists children in dealing with classmates or friends who may have cystic fibrosis. My seven year old son thought it was informative and fun to read. There should be more books of this kind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Changed from Edition 2
I loved Edition 2 but I see that it has definitely been updated for the Internet age.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-buy book
This is one of the important books of gifted education that teachers and researchers must buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only When Required
At $100.00 this book demonstrated what it really means to be gifted: get your average textbook to be required in education courses needed by public school teachers and charge as much as you can for it.No way should this book cost what it does.It is not bad, but the price is ridiculous.Enough said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on gifted education
This book is an invaluable resource to both parents and teachers

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best books on early education
This is not the "XXX for the Dummies" type of book. This book is a textbook for college classes. It has theories and cites primary research data.If you do not like reading demanding textbooks for college students, this book is not for you, considering its high price.

It not only suggests you what to do, but also explains the reason behind it.You need to read it carefully and critically.

There are an overwhelming number of books on this subject that you probably won't read them all, and frankly the vast majority of them are just not worth reading. This one is clearly worth reading and your child will benefit invaluably, if you spend serious time on this book, no matter your child is gifted or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Ways to Learn: Young People's Guide to Learning Disabil
My 10 year old son and I read this book together because he was resistant initially. He immediately connected with the mountain climbing analogy that the author uses to explain the challenges of a learning disability.Hesmiled and acknowledged his strengths and weaknesses when the textchallenged him to do so. The book also has a very helpful and clearexplanation of different learning disabilities, the nature of intelligenceand intelligence testing, and methods of intervention. While I am apsychologist, and have explained a fair amount to my son, it is alwayshelpful for him to hear it in another way and from another source. We planto return to some of the tips for school when school begins.I think wewill return to the mountain climbing analogy often. ... Read more

Product Description
Now with 27 new handouts and the Spanish translations users have been asking for, the revised edition of this popular book offers a fresh, practical approach to teaching struggling students in elementary through high school. Applying their expert knowledge of how children learn, the authors developed more than 75 highly effective intervention handouts - ideal for teachers to use in the classroom and share with parents for use at home. This second edition is set up like the first: there is a short questionnaire that helps school psychologists pinpoint students' strengths and needs, and teachers use the handouts to address the areas that need work. Photocopiable and easy to print from the convenient new CD-ROM, the handouts in this edition: fit perfectly with RTI - give teachers a clear and easy way to help struggling students and take next steps if more intervention is needed; help students with a wide range of learning challenges, including learning disabilities, sensory issues, and emotional or behavioral problems; and, enhance the home - school connection - both teachers and parents can use the handouts to help children make progress in areas of concern. Each intervention handout is ready to use: it clearly describes the skill involved, indicates which children should use the intervention, and suggests easy-to-implement strategies. And because the handouts were developed around the four cognitive areas in Dr. Naglieri's well-respected PASS theory - Planning, Attention, Simultaneous processing, and Successive processing - users can be sure they're getting proven, reliable approaches to solving students' academic challenges. ...
