5-0 out of 5 stars Kinzie grad would suggest you get this.
I graduated from Kinzie Elementary school (Chicago, IL) in 1990 and for one year/one class, I had Jeri Banks for a teacher. Sometime after graduating in 1990, Banks became the principal.

She created an environment where deaf students and hearing students interacted with each other even to the point of having hearing students take sign language classes.

Though I haven't read this book yet I was a part of the experience. I was intrigued to find this book!

Product Description
Written during a period of reexamination and change in the field of special education, this book was developed in order to provide a better understanding of the contexts in which children receive their formal education. The movement toward the "least restrictive environment" for the education of children with disabilities is weathering a wave of reinterpretations including mainstreaming, the regular education initiative, and inclusion. While each interpretation has its proponents and critics, limited theory and few data are available to guide these important policy decisions.

Focusing specifically on classrooms -- the settings where educators can have the most immediate impact and where research is most needed -- this volume's goals are:
* to establish what is known about classroom ecologies from both general and special education perspectives,
* to integrate the perspectives of researchers and practitioners, and
* to chart directions for further research specifically related to children with learning disabilities.

The construct of classroom ecology is defined as three interrelated domains: instruction, teacher and peer interaction, and organization and management. This scheme provides the structure for the book. Taken as a whole, the content of the volume underscores the limits of current knowledge and at the same time provides directions for needed changes in both research and practice.

Product Description
By 1987 Swaggart was one of the most popular video preachers in the world, with a weekly television audience of 2.1 million in the US and a worldwide audience of millions more in 143 countries. But then, in a cheerless motel west of New Orleans, Jimmy's life and ministry took a calamitous turn. This the tale of the rise of two intimately linked colossi of the American century: Pentecostalism, the fastest growing religious movement in the world, and its "evil twin", Rock 'n' Roll. A major theme of the book is how the religious ecstasy of Pentecostalism - the rousing music, the speaking in tongues, the reception of the Spirit - combined with its severe sexual repression leads to the kind of furtive acting out that brought down not only Jimmy Swaggart but also other evangelists. It is the story, too, of the rapid rise of the Religious Right, with its competing personalities and ideologies. In the end, the author sees Jimmy as a victim - like many others - of a primitive faith colliding with the forces of the late 20th century fame. ... Read more

Making Inclusion Work for Children with Dyspraxia: Practical Strategies for Teachers
This is an excellent resource for parents and teachers with lots of explanation and practical strategies to support a child at school, and assist them to learn. It is easy to read, and provides an understanding of what it is like to be a child with this condition. That it has been written by a parent and a therapist soon becomes evident.

The suggestions for sport activities, science, maths and writing are practical with many able to be adapted for home, and extend in the secondary school years. After difficulties at school I purchased this for the school, it has helped them to understand the nature of my son's problems and how to assist him.Unlike other books, this book goes beyond the pre-school years.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good practical guide for teachers
Unlike many texts on dyspraxia which dwell only on recognizing the problem, this book recommends ways to actually help students with dyspraxia.I have tried many of the suggestions and they work.I recommend this book to any teacher.

I have a student who is gifted with dyspraxia.I would love to see a book that addresses gifted children who have learning disabilities.I believe these children have special issues because they know so much more than they can show on tests and written work. These children are afflicted with frustration on many levels. For example, many books on dyspraxia only deal with issues in learning elementary math, but what happens to gifted kids doing algebra? These are children that due to their gifts could compensate when the math was easier and now find that terms disappear or signs are lost. How can these children be helped? This book does not deal with these issues, but I think this author would be a good person to study this problem. ... The particular difficulties experienced by pupils are discussed in direct relation to specific areas of the curriculum, including: core and foundation subjects, PSHE, citizenship and broader aspects such as break times and assemblies.

The authors show the reader how structured teaching can enable pupils with ASD to access the curriculum in a meaningful way and offer many practical strategies to facilitate this process.

This book will benefit those on specialist autism courses, all providers of autism-specific training and the many teachers and teaching assistants working with autistic pupils who are asking for this guidance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Division TEACCH have never promoted themselves in the way that some other programs working with children have, and for a long while there haven't been any readily-available books describing their current methods and wealth of accumulated clinical experience.

This book begins to fill that gap.

Although it often refers to the requirements of the UK's National Curriculum, it should be equally relevant to teachers, parents and professionals in the USA and elsewhere.

It gives a detailed (but very readable) account of how the various TEACCH tools such as structure, visual schedules and worksystems can be individualized to help support children and adolescents at all levels of ability.

And hopefully along the way it should dispel a few myths - that TEACCH methods are only for "low-functioning" children, that they're incompatible with inclusion, and so on.

The book never claims to have "The Answer" for dealing with autism; it simply presents a toolbox of low-key, easy-to-implement strategies which can help support the learning of almost any student on the autistic spectrum. ... Read more
