Product Description
The development of a reliable, continuously tunable laser has produced a strong revival in atomic and molecular spectroscopy, allowing the more precise measurement of spectral wavelengths of transitions, the performance of various sorts of Doppler-free high-resolution spectroscopy and the collection of spectral information with high sensitivity from a small ensemble of particles. This review discusses the possibilities of the method and its inherent problems. Tunable lasers must be made easier to operate, more stable and less expensive. It is suggested that the semiconductor diode laser could be the solution to these problems, if it is properly developed. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the first book for atomic spectroscopists to present the basic principles of experimental designs, optimization and multivariate regression. Multivariate regression is a valuable statistical method for handling complex problems (such as spectral and chemical interferences) which arise during atomic spectrometry. However, the technique is underused as most spectroscopists do not have time to study the often complex literature on the subject. This practical introduction uses conceptual explanations and worked examples to give readers a clear understanding of the technique. Mathematics is kept to a minimum but, when required, is kept at a basic level.

Product Description
Over the last few years, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has rapidly developed into an important and extremely useful method of analysis. In fact, for certain research areas and applications, ranging from material science via chemistry to life sciences, it has become an indispensable tool because this fast and cost-effective type of spectroscopy provides qualitative and quantitative information not available from any other technique.
This book offers a balanced overview of the fundamental theory and instrumentation of NIR spectroscopy, introducing the material in a readily comprehensible manner. A considerable part of the text is dedicated to practical applications, including sample preparation and investigations of polymers, textiles, drugs, food and animal feed. However, special topics, such as two-dimensional correlation analysis, are also covered in separate chapters.
Written by eight experts in different fields, this book presents an introduction to the current state of developments and is valuable to spectroscopists and to practitioners applying NIR spectroscopy as a daily analytical tool.

Product Description
Proteomics is the study of the subsets of proteins present in different parts of an organism and how they change with time and varying conditions. Mass spectrometry is the leading technology used in proteomics, and the field relies heavily on bioinformatics to process and analyze the acquired data.   Since recent years have seen tremendous developments in instrumentation and proteomics-related bioinformatics, there is clearly a need for a solid introduction to the crossroads where proteomics and bioinformatics meet.

Computational Methods for Mass Spectrometry Proteomics describes the different instruments and methodologies used in proteomics in a unified manner. The authors put an emphasis on the computational methods for the different phases of a proteomics analysis, but the underlying principles in protein chemistry and instrument technology are also described. The book is illustrated by a number of figures and examples, and contains exercises for the reader. Written in an accessible yet rigorous style, it is a valuable reference for both informaticians and biologists.

Computational Methods for Mass Spectrometry Proteomics is suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of bioinformatics and molecular biology with an interest in proteomics. It also provides a good introduction and reference source for researchers new to proteomics, and for people who come into more peripheral contact with the field. ... Read more

This book offers a pragmatic guide to navigating through the complex maze of EPR/ESR spectroscopy fundamentals, techniques, and applications. Written for the scientist who is new to EPR spectroscopy, the editors have prepared a volume that de-mystifies the basic fundamentals without weighting readers down with detailed physics and mathematics, and then presents clear approaches in specific application areas. The first part presents basic fundamentals and advantages of electron paramagnetic resonance spectrscopy. The second part explores severalapplication areas including chemistry, biology, medicine, materials and geology. A frequently-asked-questions sections focuses on practicalquestions, such as the size of sample, etc. It's an ideal, hands-on reference for chemists and researchers in the pharmaceutical and materials (semiconductor) industries who are looking for a basic introduction to EPR spectroscopy. ... Product Description
The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter in the frequency regime between 10-6 and 1012 Hz is the domain of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. In this extraordinary extended dynamic range molecular and collective dipolar fluctuations, charge transport and polarisation effects at inner and outer boundaries take place and determine the dielectric properties of the material under study. Hence, broadband dielectric spectroscopy enables to gain a wealth of information on the dynamics of bound (dipoles) and mobile charge carriers depending on the details of a molecular system. - It is the intention of this book to be both, an introductory course to broadband dielectric spectroscopy but as well a monograph describing recent dielectric contributions to actual topics, like the scaling of relaxation processes, molecular dynamics in confinement or non-resonant dielectric hole burning, just to name a few. ... Product Description

NMR spectroscopy has proven to be a powerful technique to study the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules. Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy is a comprehensive textbook that guides the reader from a basic understanding of the phenomenological properties of magnetic resonance to the application and interpretation of modern multi-dimensional NMR experiments on 15N/13C-labeled proteins. Beginning with elementary quantum mechanics, a set of practical rules is presented and used to describe many commonly employed multi-dimensional, multi-nuclear NMR pulse sequences. A modular analysis of NMR pulse sequence building blocks also provides a basis for understanding and developing novel pulse programs. This text not only covers topics from chemical shift assignment to protein structure refinement, as well as the analysis of protein dynamics and chemical kinetics, but also provides a practical guide to many aspects of modern spectrometer hardware, sample preparation, experimental set-up, and data processing. End of chapter exercises are included to emphasize important concepts. Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy not only offer students a systematic, in-depth, understanding of modern NMR spectroscopy and its application to biomolecular systems, but will also be a useful reference for the experienced investigator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for NMR
I'm a complete novice to NMR and this text provides a great introduction to the field with a focus on biological molecules. I've also read parts of Protein NMR Spectroscopy by John Cavanagh and I think Rule's book sets up the stage nicely for the reader to explore further by reading more detailed texts (Cavanagh) on particulars of the field. It's a relatively slim volume and not as intimidating in the mathematical modelling as some of the other books. If you need to understand an NMR phenomenon, read about it in this book first and it'll save you some time in developing an overall picture before looking at pages and pages of derivations in a dusty old book. I have Dr. Rule in part of my classes, I'm a first year grad student, and his amazing teaching ability in the classroom isreflected in the book. Highly recommended to those new to NMR along with Cavanagh's text. I wouldn't leave home without them. ... Read more
