5-0 out of 5 stars Best money ever spent!
This text is exceptional! I would highly recommend this textbook to any clinician working with children who have hypernasal speech/ VPI. It has proven to be the most USEFUL textbook I've ever had...let's just say this one is NOT sitting on my shelf collecting dust!It was so thoughtful of Dr. Kummer to include video examples of key issues related to VPI.I am so happy I purchased this text and found the price to be very reasonable considering everything it has to offer. Buy it, you'll be glad you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook from Amazon!
The book was exactly what i needed to do well in my class. It was the exact updated version of the original book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice overview of available information
This is a nice reference to introduce you general issues, anatomic structures, and therapeutic and surgical techniques involved in the care of patients with craniofacial anomalies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for graduate students!
I have been teaching a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies for 20+ years.I am thrilled with Dr. Kummer's text.Students love it!It has a strong research base, but the information has excellent clinical application and is very readable with many case studies.Although it is geared toward speech-language pathologists, its multi-disciplinary orientation would make it a useful resource for any member of a cleft palate team. The information is complex enough to be useful to an experienced team member, yet the novice reader is given sufficient background information to be able to grow with the text.Exceptionally thorough and highly recommended! ... Product Description
This is the only book to relate all three of the currently interactive areas of speech science-acoustic phonetics, speech perception, and speech technology. The book presents a gradual course, starting with a clear tutorial approach to basic speech then leading to speech perception research, the various theories of speech perception, and the modern speech technologies of computer synthesis and recognition of speech messages. The aim is to bring the reader through basic acoustics, spectrum analysis, vowel and consonant acoustics, and into the research literature of speech perception technology. The basic acoustic theory of speech production, the Source-Filter Theory, is clarified via text and diagrams. This knowledge is then applied to interpreting spectrograms of speech examples that sample all the phonetic distinctions among vowels and consonants.Distinctive acoustical patterns for vowel and consonant perception by listeners are summarized in detail based on the research literature.Critical discussions provide theories of motor, auditory, and computer recognition of speech.Consonant and vowel recognition by the hearing-impaired is described in relation to acoustic phonetic distinctions.Techniques of speech synthesis, recognition analysis by machines, and speech technologies are thoroughly explained.Anyone interested in speech acoustics, acoustic phonetics, speech and hearing science, psychoacoustics, and speech perception at any level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Speech Communication
This is a fine book for approaching the field of speech communication. It includes lucid presentations of key concepts such as phoneme, phone, allophone, units, formants and the Bernoulli's effect. Every chapter closes with a summary, a great tool for reinforcing what you have learned through the chapters. Chapters 1-10 are introductory material, and following chapters discuss more advanced topics, such as models of perception. Application developers will also benefit from a summary of potential acoustic cues from articulatory features (p. 152). Finally, the appendices constitute great teaching and researching resources.

If you are completely new to he field, I would suggest to read first "The Speech Chain" by Denes & Pinson, then Chapters 1-10 of this book. Later on, you may follow with "Acoustic Phonetics" by Stevens, "Acoustic Theory of Speech Production" by Fant, "Speech Processing" by Deng and O'Shaugnessy, and "Spoken Language Processing" by Huang et al.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Great textbook. Not the easiest in the world but surely the most comprehensive for a Speech Science course. Thoroughly sound. Don't think there is another like it. Using it in our course with excellent response from students.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good introduction to the nature of speech
A great deal of well-organized, well-presented information regarding the nature of speech, including many spectrograms with formant tracks. The review of speech perception theory is also well done. The technology istreated in only the final chapter, and definitely qualifies as an overview. The only glaring omission is no description whatsoever of the humanauditory mechanism. Nevertheless, the book suited my purposes well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleft Palate Speech is a decent textbook
I haven't read it all yet -- my semester just started. So far I know that this book does not hesitate regarding details. Some chapter sections read almost like an annotated bibliography describing studies in detail.I find it hard to figure out the main point at times, the take home message.Sometimes the section ends with a summary but sometimes it doesn't.When it presents conflicting evidence and doesn't summarize it, that bugs me.Basically though, this is a good textbook. ... Product Description

Speech Science integrates scientific material on the acoustics, anatomy, and physiology of speech production and perception with state-of-the-art instrumental techniques used in clinical practice.

Each chapter presenting theoretical information is followed by a corresponding chapter on clinical application, demonstrating the connections between scientific theory and clinical management of communication disorders. To reinforce this link, case studies and questions in each clinical application chapter help students focus on how scientific principles are applied in clinical contexts.

Call-out notes, summary points, and review questions help students consolidate material for improved retention. Schematic illustrations enhance the text and demonstrate anatomical and functional relationships between structures. With this student- and instructor-friendly text, students will find theoretical information meaningful, less intimidating, and more easily accessible.

The Second Edition features two new chapters on neurology that present a comprehensive yet targeted discussion of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology relevant to speech production (Ch. 12) and examine current brain imaging techniques (Ch. 13). In each clinical application chapter, case studies and follow-up questions reinforce the link between science and clinical application.  Pedagogical aides such as call-out notes in the margins have been included in all chapters to underscore important concepts.  Plus, this edition comes packaged with a new DVD to accompany the text that provides visualizations of many important concepts, as well as self-test quizzes for students to evaluate their understanding of the material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Books Falling Apart!
Hi Graduate Students,

Isn't it a shame that we are paying hundreds of dollars for textbooks that fall apart when you read them, well, this is one of them. I love the book itself - an excellent book in content. The producer of the physical book itself is doing a poor job of manufacturing. I did call the publisher about this issue. This seems to be a trend in graduate textbooks. Just my thoughts, we are paying too much for shabby treatment.

Product Description
Little information is available to speech and language pathologists searching for practical ideas about treatment of childhood apraxia of speech. It can be difficult for therapists to determine how to structure treatment sessions, provide reinforcement, use multisensory cues targeted to the learning style of the child, and choose treatment targets based on factors other than phonemes and phonological processes. Here's How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech empowers speech and language pathologists with a clear vision of systematic treatment approaches to achieve positive outcomes for children with apraxia of speech. Each chapter addresses those questions most commonly posed by speech and language therapists. The first part of the book defines Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and describes the characteristics commonly associated with CAS. Guidelines for conducting a motor speech examination are included so that therapists can make treatment plan decisions and develop appropriate goals that address the unique needs of children with apraxia. The foundations of effective treatment are described, including phoneme sequencing, repetitive practice, intensity of treatment, selection of vocabulary, and use of multisensory cues to facilitate improvement of motor speech skills. Additional considerations are discussed, including vowels, prosody, production of phrases and sentences, and reinforcement/feedback.A portion of the book provides information that can be distributed to parents in order to help them understand the nature and treatment of CAS in their child. In addition, home program forms and ideas are provided, so that therapists have a structured way of communicating with parents about therapy goals, vocabulary, and extension activities for home practice. ... Product Description
Paediatric speech and language therapists are challenged by diminished resources and increasingly complex caseloads. The new edition addresses their concerns. Norms for speech development are given, differentiating between the emergence of the ability to produce speech sounds (articulation) and typical developmental error patterns (phonology). The incidence of speech disorders is described for one UK service providing crucial information for service management.

The efficacy of service provision is evaluated to show that differential diagnosis and treatment is effective for children with disordered speech. Exploration of that data provides implications for prioritising case loads. The relationship between speech and language disorders is examined in the context of clinical decisions about what to target in therapy.

New chapters provide detailed intervention programmes for subgroups of speech disorder: delayed development, use of atypical error patterns, inconsistent errors and development verbal dyspraxia.

The final section of the book deals with special populations: children with cognitive impairment, hearing and auditory processing difficulties. The needs of clinicians working with bilingual populations are discussed and ways of intervention described. The final chapter examines the relationship between spoken and written disorders of phonology. ... Read more

Product Description
The book summarises research findings from a range of projects using a set of auditory and speech procedures designed for the psycholinguistic framework developed by Stackhouse and Wells (1997). These procedures have been used with children and adolescents with a range of difficulties associated with cleft lip and palate, dysarthria, dyspraxia, phonological impairment, Down syndrome, dyslexia, stammering, autism, semantic-pragmatic difficulties, general learning difficulties, and disadvantaged backgrounds. The procedures have also been used with normally developing children in the age range of 3-7 years. As a result, the book includes descriptions of typical performance on the procedures so that atypical can be identified more easily. In addition, as the materials were used in a longitudinal study of children’s speech and literacy development between the age of 4 and 7 years we can highlight which procedures will help in identifying children a) who are likely to persist with their speech difficulties and b) have associated literacy difficulties. ...
