4-0 out of 5 stars Golf Book Review
Glad you asked for my comments as been trying to get in touch with Amazon.
The book itself is what I expected and enjoyed reading it.Very well presented and some interesting and conversational topics for a golfer.
Now...I am disappointed in Amazon.com because...I got the 2 NEW books I ordered within days of my order. However, I also ordered a USED book of the same title and after weeks...HAVE YET TO RECEIVE THIS PART OF THE ORDER.Initially, there was a question on the credit card number (used the same number for both the new and the used book)...but after giving you a new expiration date, your reply said this problem was cleared up.
So...WHERE IS MY "USED" BOOK OF THIS SAME TITLE?Never had any problems with Amazon before. Thanks for reading this and hopefully handling this matter. If need to call...Lou Kerrick at 859-734-9630.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the top of his game
Professor Minan is the Tiger Woods of the literary field of golf. This terrific read is informative, entertaining, and provides great insight into the game's rules. Many of the examples used to illustrate the rules of golf are so intriguing they could only be real life occurences. Exquisitely written, this book captured my interest from beginning to end. This book is a must read for golfers and non golfers alike. A true sports classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A game for ladies and gentlemen
Professor Minan has delivered the coup de gras for those "boors" we all have encountered on the beloved golf course.Golf is indeed a game of honor and self discipline, a virtue seemingly vanishing from the American landscape. This tome is an interesting corollary to another attorney's book, "The Death of Common Sense", by Philip K. Howard. A little common courtesy and respect in many cases is all that is needed.Professor Minan has delivered a humorous and true revelation as to the infringement on decency and respect for the game.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This book is an instant classic, a must have.I never had more fun learning the rules of a game than I did when I read this book.I now have a few extra stories to tell my fellow golfers while on the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers to Golfing Questions We All Wanted to Ask a lawyer.
A great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It answers many of the questions I always wondered aboutthe game of golf. The book is written for a general audience, not lawyers, but will provide invaluable stories to repeat at the 19th hole. Fewgolfers will ever walk onto a golf course again without being reminded of the legalities of the game if they read this book.
The literary device the author uses to make this book so readable is a collection of nineteen actual legal court cases crafted into nineteen short stories presented in a style that O'Henry would have enjoyed. These cases track the 18 holes typically played in a "stipulated round" of golf, and a story for the favorite "hole 19" of all golfers. I ordered four morecopiesfor my family of golfers. A great Christmas gift. Howard Graham

Product Description
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has come a long way since the idea of establishing it was first mentioned by Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former IOC President, who foresaw the need for a specialised body to resolve sporting disputes outside the normal court system. His aim was for CAS to become the supreme court of world sport; an aim which, this book demonstrates, has been largely fulfilled. It has, in the words of the Swiss Federal Tribunal in a landmark judgement of 27 May, 2003, 'built up the trust of the sporting world [and is] … now widely recognised … [as]… one of the principal mainstays of organised sport.' This 'jubilee' book - after twenty years of operations - charts the history, including significant milestones, and achievements of the CAS. ... Read more

Product Description
Two days before Super Bowl XLI in 2007, the game's two opposing head coaches posed with the trophy one of them would hoist after the contest. It was a fairly unremarkable event, except that both coaches were African American--a fact that was as much of a story as the game itself.

As Jeremi Duru reveals in Advancing the Ball, this unique milestone resulted from the work of a determined group of people whose struggles to expand head coaching opportunities for African Americans ultimately changed the National Football League.Since the league's desegregation in 1946, opportunities had grown plentiful for African Americans as players but not as head coaches--the byproduct of the NFL's old-boy network and lingering stereotypes of blacks' intellectual inferiority. Although Major League Baseball and the NBA had, over the years, made progress in this regard, the NFL's head coaches were almost exclusively white up until the mid-1990s.

Advancing the Ball chronicles the campaign of former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman John Wooten to right this wrong and undo decades of discriminatory head coach hiring practices--an initiative that finally bore fruit when he joined forces with attorneys Cyrus Mehri and Johnnie Cochran. Together with a few allies, the triumvirate galvanized the NFL's African American assistant coaches to stand together for equal opportunity and convinced the league to enact the "Rooney Rule," which stipulates that every team must interview at least one minority candidate when searching for a new head coach. In doing so, they spurred a movement that would substantially impact the NFL and, potentially, the nation.

Featuring an impassioned foreword by Coach Tony Dungy, Advancing the Ball offers an eye-opening, first-hand look at how a few committed individuals initiated a sea change in America's most popular sport and added an extraordinary new chapter to the civil rights story. ... Read more

This volume of essays by established authorities and the best of the new generation of sports law and policy academics explores new territory, and its scope and tone reflect the maturity of the subject. New theoretical insights are revealed which accompany in particular two further sections dealing first with governance and regulatory issues (also freedom of movement and competition law issues) and second with questions of representation. The issue of the representation of stakeholders within sports governance is arguably the most significant development since 2000. In this regard, the focus is on social dialogue between clubs and players' representative organisations in the European professional football sector. Specific contributions on anti-doping, football hooliganism and sports betting in an EU context are included, making this a useful guide for governmental and sports officials, legal practitioners and academics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!
The Little White Book of Baseball Law is well worth the price. The authors, John H. Minan and Kevin Cole, have blended 226 pages of fascinating legal disputes from baseball's history with an examination of some of the more arcane rules in baseball. This lawyer/reader, as an 11 year oldCleveland Indians fan, without a television, began my love of baseball around the time I"heard" Willie Mays' famous over the head catch in the 1954 World Series. The Little White Book of Baseball Law more than satisfied my 55 year quest to understand everything worthy that America's pastime could brings to our culture.

The depth and breadth ofThe Little White Book of Baseball Lawis commendable. The eighteen chapter subjects rangefromSammy Sosa's corked batincidentin 2003,to the perjury allegations against Barry Bonds derived from his Grand Jury testimony. There isan explanation ofwhen, why, and if, Media corporations televising Major League Baseball can preempt Major League Baseball games.

Virtually every page has a tidbit of information that even the most dedicated fan will appreciate. Perhaps the most interesting literary device in the Book is the "Umpire's Ruling" segment that follows each chapterexplaininga pertinent legal issue of the game in concise lay person's terms. What happens when a pitched ball is stuck in the catcher's mask? What are the rules for "balks"? When is a catch a legal "catch"? Who is liable for injuries on and off the field, and on the way to the hospital? What are the merits of metal bats versus wooden bats? The reader will discover that a ball hit by a metal bat will travel at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour (mph) over 40% of time and arrive at the pitchers mound in less than .4 of a second, a shade faster than the average ball hit by a wooden bat, therefore reducing the reaction time of a pitcher finishingup his pitch.

The most interesting chapter for me was the concise explanationof the positive impact ofCurt Flood's unsuccessful legal battle on the reserve clause in the Federal Courts, which ultimately became the catalystfor the "CurtFlood Act" in which Congress included major league baseball players' "employment" contracts within the protectionsof the antitrust laws, but did not provide minor league players with the same protection in order to preserve the Minor League farm system. As Tip O'Neil oncesaid "Everything is political". Apparently, evenin Baseball.
This is a good read!

Product Description

Title IX, a landmark federal statute enacted in 1972 to prohibit sex discrimination in education, has worked its way into American culture as few other laws have. It is an iconic law, the subject of web blogs and T-shirt slogans, and is widely credited with opening the doors to the massive numbers of girls and women now participating in competitive sports. Yet few people fully understand the law’s requirements, or the extent to which it has succeeded in challenging the gender norms that have circumscribed women’s opportunities as athletes and their place in society more generally.

In this first legal analysis of Title IX, Deborah L. Brake assesses the statute’s successes and failures. While the statute has created tremendous gains for female athletes, not only raising the visibility and cultural acceptance of women in sports, but also creating social bonds for women, positive body images, and leadership roles, the disparities in funding between men’s and women’s sports have remained remarkably resilient. At the same time, female athletes continue to receive less prestige and support than their male counterparts, which in turn filters into the arena of professional sports. Brake provides a richer understanding and appreciation of what Title IX has accomplished, while taking a critical look at the places where the law has fallen short.A unique contribution to the literature on Title IX, Getting in the Game fully explores the theory, policy choices, successes, and limitations of this historic law.

Product Description
Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in Italy deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policymakers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Italy will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law. ... In its journey towards establishing uniformity, FIFA created a Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) in 2001 to resolve disputes regarding the international status and transfer of players. During the years 2002–2006, exactly 597 decisions of the DRC were published on the website of FIFA. In this book all the relevant decisions of the DRC during that period are analysed and classified into different categories. After a discussion of the most relevant judicial aspects in relation to the DRC, the different categories of disputes, amongst others the termination of the employment contract, the amount of compensation and the sporting sanctions, are discussed in depth. This book can serve as a practical work of reference by all persons working in the field of international football, such as sports lawyers and sports advisers, and also by students, researchers, players, clubs and national associations. ... Sports law has been growing rapidly over the last few years, regularly making headlines as well as leading to a developing body of law practised by specialist lawyers. This new work, by leading practitioners in the field, is the first to provide a coherent framework for understanding the law in this area, as well as a deep analysis of its key features. The subject can be split into various areas of practice. For example regulatory rules, which cover what can be described as the constitutional aspect of organised sport (this includes the enforcing of regulatory codes and the disciplinary procedures of the various sport governing organisations). Second, broadcasting and marketing which covers the revenue generated by the commercial exploitation of sports clubs, sporting events and players. This area has grown rapidly following the huge infusion of finance from television and corporate sponsorship into a growing number of sports.A third area is player representation, which focuses on the players and includes a broad range of legal issues including club transfers and player contracts (including the famous Bosman ruling),employment advice, personal injury litigation, disciplinary tribunals, discrimination law and remedies in the courts. The audience is solicitors and barristers, legal advisers to sports organisations and clubs, legal advisers to corporations and media companies, academics teaching sports law, sports administrators and law libraries. ... Product Description
An examination of the special character of sport through European law's microscope reveals the scope of European trade law's adaptability to the particular context in which it is applied. The story of European sports law told through the case law illuminates the way in which European law is exploited by actors as a lever to prise open sometimes long-established organisational patterns. Sport has in recent years become more commercialised and more juridified too. The challenges to its self-regulatory preferences have strengthened and European law plays a significant part in this narrative. It is testimony to the pragmatic and creative approach of the European Commission and the European Court of Justice to the regulation of sport within the Single Market of the European Union, even though there is no specific provision in the EC Treaty giving the EU competence in the field of sport. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting But Flawed
Positives: The author's writing style flows smoothly and is easy to read. He explains legal terminology in an easy to understand manner. The book brought back memories of controversial cases and added interesting ones I had never heard of.

Negative: Too often I felt that the author left me hanging, wondering what point he was trying to make. Here's an example: In one section of his chapter titled 'Equal Opportunity in Sports', the author discusses racial discrimation against black people by whites. He mentions that in 1990 Michael Jordan applied for membership in an Illinois country club and was rejected. The problem is that the author does not say that the country club was "all-white", but that the members were predominently of one particular religion, which he names.

Was the author implying that practitioners of this religion, as opposed to practitioners of other religions, discriminate against blacks? Or that Jordan was rejected for religious reasons, rather than white vs. black? If not, what was the purpose of mentioning the religion at all? The reader is left wondering because nothing further is written about this incident.

I would recommend that you read the book because of the positives, but keep the negative in mind. ... Read more
