Product Description
This book examines the many areas where sport and law meet, and is the first book to look at these matters primarily from a Scots perspective, although it also provides additional legal citation for lawyers in England and abroad. Written by leading academics and many of Scotland's best known sports lawyers, coverage includes the running of a sports club, judicial review, the use of drugs in sport and, negotiation of sports contracts. The book also looks at issues in selected sports - football, rugby, golf and skiing. "...this book contains a mine of information for the lawyer who is sailing uncharted waters and will be a valuable reference" - "SCOLAG". ... Read more

Yet here in the midst of this Forest, his maternal grandfather, Sir Anthony Cooke, the learned tutor to King Edward VI., owned one of the most ancient estates in all Warwickshire. It was near enough to Kenilworth Castle, given by Elizabeth to her favorite Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, for Sir Anthony Cooke and his family to attend without fatigue, the entertainment given to the Queen in the summer of 1575. I have no doubt young Francis Bacon was there with his father, Sir Nicholas Bacon, Elizabeth's Lord, keeper of the Great Seal, his mother Lady Anne, and his aunts Lady Cecil, Lord Bur- leigh's wife, and Lady Eussell, wife to Sir John Russell, as they were attached to the Court. Sir John Russell's sister married Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick, who was the Earl of Leicester's brother. There are passages in the plays of Shakespeare... ... Read more

Product Description
As sport has developed into a global business, the importance of sports image rights as a marketing tool to promote individual sports persons, sports teams, clubs and even major sporting events themselves, has evolved to become a significant player in the multi-billion dollar sports industry around the world. This book provides a concise legal and practical overview of the creation, protection and enforcement of sports image rights in EU Member States, pre-May 2004.It also examines the sports image rights of Norway and Switzerland and looks comparatively at the USA. Each chapter is devoted to a review of the applicable legal rules on sports image rights in an individual country. A separate chapter deals with some of the fiscal aspects of the subject. In addition, where appropriate, practical matters, such as the contents of contracts, are also examined and explained. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The aim of this book is to provide an account of how the law influences the operation, administration and playing of modern sports. Although the book focuses on legal doctrine it has been written bearing in mind sport's historical, cultural, social and economic context, including the drama and colour of sport's major events and leading personalities. And although it is inevitably very much concerned with elite professional sports it is not dominated by them, and seeks to cover the widest possible range of sports, professional and amateur. Initially, the book addresses practical issues such as the structures of national and international sport, and examines the evolution of the body of law known as 'sports law'. Thereafter three main themes are identified: regulatory; participatory; and, financial aspects of modern sport. The regulatory theme is dealt with in chapters considering the manner in which decisions of sports governing bodies may be challenged in the ordinary courts and the development of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in sport. The participatory theme includes the legal regulation of doping and violence in sport, as well as the broader topic of tortious liability for sporting injuries. The financial theme, reflecting the enhanced commercialisation of sport at all levels, is developed in chapters concerning issues in applied contract and employment law for players and legal matters surrounding the organisation of major sports events. The conclusion summarises modern sport's experience of EU law, pointing the way to the future direction of sports law more generally. While the book is aimed primarily at students, and is designed to cover fundamental and topical areas of sports law (sports law in general; sports bodies and the courts; arbitration in sport; corruption; doping; violence; civil liability; discrimination; the commodification of modern sport; and, the likely future of sports law), it should also prove of wider interest to practitioners, sports administrators and governing bodies; and though focused primarily on UK law it will also appeal to readers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. ... Product Description
The International Encyclopaedia of Sports Law deals with international and national sports law. For both levels, the encyclopaedia will include the texts of the laws and the regulations of the sports organisations. This constitutes the "codex" volume. As far as monographs are concerned, the preferred approach is to structure the encyclopaedia by jurisdiction, in which various issues will be dealt with (according to a similar table of contents). In this approach a main division of the encyclopaedia is seen in three parts, namely international, regional and national. For each level, similar topics should be dealt with, like those mentioned below. An introductory part may precede the other parts. For each level of jurisdiction, a further distinction will be made between public regulation (laws and regulation from governmental authorities) and private regulation (regulation and by-laws from sports organisations, like IOC, FIFA, etc.).

Countries currently covered: Bulgaria, Hellas, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom

Product Description
This series of short stories and anecdotes entitled: Stories About: Sports, Mothers-in-Law, & The Greatest Generation is a second trip down through time and experience. The stories in this second book, taken primarily from the author’s “SportsTalk and More” newspaper column, deal with a variety of subjects. Some are factual true stories, while others are written with tongue placed firmly in cheek. There are stories about baseball and basketball, about life in America both real and imagined, about hero’s real and made up, and a story about Uncle Charlie Brown, and “The Greatest Generation” who saved the world from Germany’s Hitler, Italy’s Mussolini, and Tojo and the Japanese Warlords. Most stories in this book are funny and should make you laugh, other stories will make you think, and some might even bring a tear or two.

Product Description
This impressive new source is the first book to give school administrators and nonspecialist legal advisors practical working knowledge of the legal principles, judicial interpretations, and case law relating to organized sports in an academic environment. The judicial opinions that comprise the bulk of the text have been edited and supplemented with notes and comments explaining the principles and applications that will help administrators avoid potential liability. The volume covers four main areas of legal concern: the athlete's right of participation and the equal opportunity provisions that currently apply, the problem of reconciling the civil rights of participants with the disciplinary authority of administrators, products liability of equipment manufacturers, and torts liability of program sponsors. Cutting through the complexity of legal concepts and jargon, this volume will meet the needs of administrators with a wide range of responsibilities. ... Read more
