From the author: This paper explores the scientific evidence that has been gathered on the contributions and benefits of physical education and sport (PES) in schools for both children and for educational systems. Research evidence is presented in terms of children's development in a number of domains: physical, lifestyle, affective, social, and cognitive. The review suggests that PES have the potential to make significant and distinctive contributions to development in each of these domains. It is suggested that PES have the potential to make distinctive contributions to the development of children's fundamental movement skills and physical competences, which are necessary precursors of participation in later lifestyle and sporting physical activities. They also, when appropriately presented, can support the development of social skills and social behaviors, self-esteem and proschool attitudes, and, in certain circumstances, academic and cognitive development. The review also stresses that many of these benefits will not necessarily result from participation, per se; the effects are likely to be mediated by the nature of the interactions between students and their teachers, parents, and coaches who work with them. Contexts that emphasize positive experiences, characterized by enjoyment, diversity, and the engagement of all, and that are managed by committed and trained teachers and coaches, and supportive and informed parents, significantly influence the character of these physical activities and increase the likelihood of realizing the potential benefits of participation.

Product Description

When Congress passed Title IX of the Civil Rights Act in 1972, they seemed to be doing something laudable and also long overdue-prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in America's schools. But thirty years later, a law designed to guarantee equal opportunity has become the most explicit, government-enforced quota regime in America, putting boys and men on the losing side of a battle for athletic and educational opportunity. A former athlete herself, Jessica Gavora interviewed dozens of leading college athletes, educators and legal experts for this provocative, yet carefully researched book. She argues that the 1999 World Cup victory of the U.S. Women's Soccer team, for instance, widely seen as a Title IX triumph, was actually the result of a far more profound social revolution that has changed America's mind about sexual roles and female destiny. If anything, Title IX has had a destructive overall effect on all college athletes by killing opportunities to compete. Gavora shows how Title IX sports quotas have caused chaos at schools like Brown University and led directly to the cancellation of some of the most prestigious men's programs in the country-among them Providence College's baseball team, Princeton's wrestling team and the men's swimming and diving program that produced several Olympic champions. But if Title IX has tilted the college playing field, Gavora suggests that its greatest impact on American social life may still lie ahead as the federal bureaucrats, activist judges, and radical feminists who have shaped the statute's interpretation now seek to expand its reach into sexual harassment and other areas of education where boys and girls have to conform to their notion of "gender equity." "Tilting the Playing Field" is a trenchant insider's look at how one law-and its unintended consequences--has affected our view of sports, sex, and schools.
Amazon.com Review
In the tradition of Who Stole Feminism? and Christina Hoff Sommers, Jessica Gavora offers a devastating account of feminism gone haywire. For more than a generation, liberal women's groups have used a piece of federal civil rights legislation called Title IX to expand opportunities for women to play sports in college. In a classic case of unintended consequences, however, they've wrought enormous damage on men's sports programs. The cost of complying with Title IX has led to the abolition of hundreds of men's sports programs, including some heralded ones. In 1993, for instance, UCLA dropped its men's swimming and diving teams, which had produced 16 Olympic gold medalists. This is all done in the name of sexual "proportionality"--the supposed iniquity of men playing sports more than women. Gavora is a good writer and a perceptive critic who notes an exquisite irony: "Whereas in every other area of life, from the military to the boardroom to the bedroom, women's rights activists have insisted that women be allowed to compete in the same arena with men, Title IX activists have worked in athletics to protect women's special status.... On this narrow score, difference is accepted." Gavora also points out that Title IX radicalism won't halt at the edge of the sporting field; it's now stepping into new areas, including school harassment policies, student testing, and math and science achievement--anywhere males and females don't conform to feminist expectations of gender equity. Tilting the Playing Field is an excellent book on an important subject, and will appeal to right-leaning readers who dissent from feminist orthodoxy. --John Miller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important
Very well researched and presented material.Gavora has done a good job of calling out the critical issues surrounding Title IX.While the impact on athletic programs is very troubling I'm even more concerned with the political correctness going on concerning testing results and the push of the Obama Administration into the sciences.

I hope Jessica will give us an update to this fine book in the near future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...but so what?
Full disclosure:I know the author personally and professionally.

Tilting the Playing Field: Schools, Sports, Sex and Title IX by Jessica Gavora is exceptionally well written and researched. One could do worse than read this book to get an overview of what is going on with Title IX and its effect on school funded sports.

In all honesty, I have little interest or background in this subject. However, since I knew the author and had been impressed by some of her writing and verbal arguments on other subjects; decided to invest some time in learning about this hot button issue.

Even if all of Ms Gavora's facts and arguments are spot on, it is difficult for me to see why anyone would care about publicly funded sports in high school and college. When I attended college at the University of Oklahoma, that institution was a hot bed of out of control athletes.Cutting some funding and forcing these folks to compete in student funded and ran intramural activities seems like it would have been an improvement.Indeed, many of the athletes I met or observed in college had no business being in college. When I hear that certain universities have an 80% or 90% graduation rate among athletes, I know that someone is cooking the books. The graduation among ALL students at a typical state university normally hovers around 50% of any incoming freshman class.

Moreover, if one looks at the military academies, it is easy to make the argument that the attempt to develop competitive football and basketball teams has lowered standards academically and professionally. The recent scandals at the Naval Academy have all largely involved those on athletic scholarships.Fundamentally, one must ask if student funded and student led intramural sports are more effective at developing leadership and management skills than the current system.

Since I feel that the current system is so inherently flawed, the fact that Title IX is badly "tilting" it in an unnatural state is not an issue, in my humble opinion, for concern.

Regardless, this book is extremely well researched and written. While I disagree with the thesis of this book, I would gladly read another book by the same author just to enjoy her academic rigor and beautiful writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spreading the Truth!!!!
This book is fantastic!A real page turner.Other books on Title IX are very dense and technical.Gavora provides all the history of Title IX in an entertaining and fascinating manner, along with great case studies of what the legistlation has done.Anyone interested in Title IX should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is the best analysis you'll find on this important topic. It's a great place to start for anyone who wants to learn more about Title IX.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way off base...Gavora misses facts
In this book, Gavora continues to perpetuate the myth that Title IX is responsible for the elimination of men's sports.Nevermind the fact that nowhere in Title IX does it say cut men's teams and create women's teams. However, that is what Gavora insinuates which is just wrong. It is administrators (mostly men) who make the decision to eliminate sports, a small fact which Gavora overlooks.Overall, this book was filled with inacuracies and I would not recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Athlete Find the Joy in High School Sports
This year our football team set a record ... we were undefeated in our conference for the second consecutive year. Then it came time for our playoff game.As a #3 seed playing a #14 seed, we expected to win our first game. Most of the players and coaches were thinking ahead to the third game, where winning would begin to get difficult. Then the flu made the rounds on our football team. Then the rain ... a total of four inches beginning the day prior to and ending three hours before the game.It was difficult to use our greatest assets of speed and agility in the mud, and some of our key players were still ill but trying to play. This loss ended our dreams for a state championship. After the game we made our way onto the field to say goodbye to the seniors. It broke my heart to see their tears, not knowing whether they were because we lost or because they had played their last game, or perhaps a little of both.We had watched these boys grow up, becoming not just fine athletes but also fine young men.

The fact is that most of these young men will not go on to play football in college, let alone "earn" a college scholarship.According to Jim Thompson, only 5.7 percent of high school football players play in college. For basketball, it's 3 percent for boys and 3.3 percent for girls.Of the young athletes who do play sports in college, only about 2.3 percent receive a scholarship, and most receive a "partial scholarship that may be just a sliver of the entire cost of college."Most parents want to believe their young athlete has the talent to receive a scholarship, but after reading this book will set aside some money for college, realizing the "odds" are against it.

The High School Sports Parent is a comprehensive guide, covering everything from higher goals to sportsmanship to injuries, even helping decide when it's time to quit.Ever hear parents screaming when their kids make a mistake?Know a parent who coaches their child's team? When my son played basketball, at practice one night the coach became very frustrated with his son and threw the basketball into his back, nearly knocking him down. The parents who observed this behavior complained to the principal, who asked him to resign. While these types of parents definitely need to read this book, every sports parent will benefit from Mr. Thompson's advice. Some schools are even handing free copies out to parents in an effort to avoid problems later on.This book isn't just about helping your child learn to compete; it is also a tool to help you help your teen athlete thrive, making himself, his team, and the game better.

In this collection of essays, leading national sport authorities including journalists, coaches, athletic directors, and varsity and professional players themselves, talk about what is wrong with sports education today and how it can be improved. Each contributor considers whether public expectations - that sport promotes character development, physical fitness and positive educational and social values - are being met in today's reality. By exploring these long unchallenged notions, the writers ask tough questions like: is a coach or parent screaming at a 6-year-old for missing a fly ball a healthy way in which to introduce a youngster to sport?; just how does an athletic scandal or the low graduation rate of student-athletes positively contribute to the image and educational mission of a university?; what does sport really represent in the age of television, corporate sky boxes and "sneaker deals"?; and how has organized sport become more about the egos of those who coach and administer the programmes than about the personal development of those who participate in them? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for teenagers!!
I was reading this book and set it down to get a cup of coffee. I came back to find my teenage son had picked it up and just started reading. He realy connected to the storyline. I joked with him that it is the 'Outsiders' of his time. I didn't take the book back and instead let him continue to read and then snuck the book back after he went to bed. I found that I couldn't put it down and as such, finished it the same day I started. My wife soon found herself in the same boat.

This is a great story, and while only the authors first offering that I know of, I found myself drawn to the characters and excited to read on. I look forward to his next title.

I recommend this book to anyone, especially those with teenagers that, like all teenagers, are trying to find out where they belong and how to fit in, especially in difficult circumstances.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read about life in a small town.
This is a great story for those of us who live or work in a small town. Although anyone would enjoy the story, the life stories told in Bury The Dead hit home for people who appreciate the intensity of small town athletics or know what it's like to deal with tragedy in a community where everybody knows everybody else. As I read the book, I could picture members of my own community as the characters described in the book. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a touching story delivered in a straightforward, easy to read style. ... Read more
