Product Description
Audiences: A supplemental text for undergraduate or graduate students in sport law courses in sport management, physical education, or recreation curriculums. Reference for libraries, sport officials, and paralegals.

Case Studies in Sport Law gives students an inside view of some of the most significant cases in sport law history--while dispensing with the legal jargon. This approach makes the book an ideal supplement for non-law students who want to understand the legal issues without having to wade through the legalese or needing a law school background to understand the cases. The cases are to the point and filled with real-life applications for sport management students.

To ensure that the most relevant cases were included in the text, a panel of experts selected 90 classic and modern cases using the Delphi technique. The cases represent the breadth of sport law affecting interscholastic and recreational programs, school districts, colleges and universities, pro sport franchises, sporting good manufacturers, and governing bodies. This expansive treatment allows students to recognize the considerable presence of legal issues in the sport industry, including the areas that the students are intending to enter.

Case Studies in Sport Law presents heavily abridged versions of the cases, allowing students to focus on the relevant details of the case rather than extraneous legal discussion. The text will help students grasp important concepts and generate thought on key topics that relate to the material in sport law texts and on subject matter that will be useful in their careers. These cases are split into the main subject areas common to sport law courses: antitrust law, constitutional law, contract law, employment law, intellectual property, products liability, statutory law, Title IX, and tort law.

Students also have online access to extended versions of the cases, where more detail and depth are provided. This allows instructors the flexibility of guiding students to basic comprehension of a case's facts or to a more complex understanding of the issues involved. The online student resource features questions that students can fill out electronically and then print and submit or e-mail to their instructors. Instructors will also gain assistance in teaching with the online instructor guide that includes the extended versions of the cases, answers to the review questions found in the student resource, and a case finder.

To facilitate reading and discussion, Case Studies in Sport Law offers

  • 10 to 12 short-answer questions per case, available electronically, which test students' comprehension and promote discussion;
  • brief chapter introductions that note the key issues and prepare the students on what to look for in the cases they are about to read; and
  • a case finder, in which students and instructors can easily find the cases that meet their needs; the electronic format allows for cases to be sorted by case dates, key terms, and other variables.
With sport litigation increasing, sport managers need an understanding of the legal environment. Case Studies in Sport Law is the right text at the right time to supplement a sport law or sport management course and expand students' understanding of sport law issues. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't order from this vendor
I ordered this book 2 weeks prior to a 5 week summer class. Going into the last week of class I still hadn't received the book, so I emailed the seller. He responded that he had totally forgot to mail it out. I asked for a refund instead, and he never responded. He just sent the book and hoped I'd forget about the refund. Very unprofessional and unorganized. Purchasing from him jeopardized my grade in my master's class, don't make the same mistake I did! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more careful editing.
This book has a lot that would be useful to a new HS coach, but unfortunately it seems that there was a lack of communication/checking between the author and the person who DTP'ed the diagrams. The diagrams contain many errors and inconsistencies which sometimes make it difficult to understand the plays and drills. Some arrows are missing or pointing in the opposite direction from what the descriptions indicate, offensive players are sometimes marked with an "X", diagrams occasionally show the ball going to one player while the description indicates a pass to a different player, etc.

Furthermore, the descriptions themselves could have been a little more detailed in places. It's clear that Coach Kuchar knows his basketball, but it's surprisingly difficult to explain basketball plays on paper, and I think this book would have benefited from a careful check by somebody who represents the target audience: a new coach with some understanding of the game but who doesn't already know what the author is trying to say.

My advice is to wait for the second edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching High School Basketball : A Complete Guide to Building a Championship Team
This has everything a high school coach needs to run a sucessful program. It does not go into great depth as other books do, it is more concise and assumes you know the fundamentals. It has a great drill section and practice itinerary. You do not need your own practice plan-If you follow Bills plan your on the road to success.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent contribution to sports or Native American studies shelves
The first volume of a series on Native American athletes, Oklahoma's Carlisle Indian School Immortals is the in-depth story of the dedicated sports players of Carlisle Indian School. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this enjoyable chronicle, accessible to readers of all backgrounds, and especially recommended for any sports player (Native American or not) seeking inspiration along the path of athletic achievement. Individual chapters focus primarily on the stories of well over a dozen young men and women who earned virtual immortality through their athletic accomplishments for their school - a couple of beginning chapters also tell about Carlisle Indians who turned pro, and explore the dynamics of all-Indian teams. An excellent contribution to sports or Native American studies shelves, especially recommended for college libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting historical information
Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (6/09)

Tom Benjey has given readers an incredible story of North American Indian history as well as an in-depth glance at Native Americans' role in the sports world. Having read many books on the history of Indians, I have never read a book that is so detailed and enjoyable to read. One can tell the author is an expert in his field.

This is more than just a sports history book, it gives readers a great insight into prejudices, lives of individuals living on the reservation and how these men overcame all obstacles to become successful in their lives.

Not many will know much about the Carlisle Indian team, but they will recognize many of the names mentioned in the book that are now in the Football Hall of Fame. The author has provided readers with pictures, cartoons and authentic letters that enhance the reading. One can tell the extensive research the author did to make this book factual.

Part of what fascinated me was that these students went to school, took off to work and returned to school never missing a beat. How great that is that the administrators and mentors were so encouraging to all their students to complete their schooling and yet at the same time went to great lengths to learn about their culture.

Readers will find so much interesting information and history in "Oklahoma's Carlisle Indian School Immortals" by Tom Benjey they won't be able to put this book down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leprechauns Don't Play Basketball
ISBN 0590448226 - I really, really wanted to like this book, if only because the BSK series is popular with kids and anything that makes them want to read has to be worth looking into.Unfortunately, it's not that good.

It's St Patrick's Day in Bailey City and Eddie is enjoying pinching everyone not wearing green.He also enjoys tripping people and otherwise getting up to mischief, even in Mrs. Jeepers' class.Mrs. Jeeper is from Transylvania and if that doesn't make her unusual enough, she's got a burning, irrational-seeming hatred of leprechauns.When time for gym class rolls around, the kids meet a visitor from Ireland, Mr. O'Grady, who's going to teach them Irish dances.The kids quickly become suspicious of the little man, certain he's a leprechaun.Of course, they're also certain that Mrs. Jeepers is a vampire, so they must just be crazy... right?Wrong!

The story is fun and lighthearted, despite the looming possibility of a leprechaun-vampire war in the hallway.The book, however, is really too short to be more than slightly amusing.By the time the tale picks up, it's already heading into the big finale which was itself a bit of a letdown.I give it three stars, consider it average, but end with a high note: I'll be reading more BSK books whenever they come my way - they're not bad, it's just this one isn't all that great.RL3, ages 7-10.

4-0 out of 5 stars A story that plays on a common prejudice among elementary school children
Children always fantasize about their teachers; according to them every school has the teacher that is evil and others who are delightful and cheery. The children at Bailey Elementary have a problem. Mrs. Jeepers is from the Transylvanian Alps in Rumania and speaks with a Dracula-like accent. The students in her third grade class are convinced that she is a vampire.
Things change when Mr. O' Grady arrives to teach them Irish dances during gym class. He has a sprightly demeanor and behaves like an Irishman who enjoys a good time. Eddie is the class mischief maker yet he meets his match in both Mrs. Jeepers and Mr. O-Grady. The class becomes convinced that Mr. O'Grady is a leprechaun.
Suddenly there is tension between Mrs. Jeepers and Mr. O'Grady when Mrs. Jeepers learns that Mr. O'Grady is there. The children are puzzled so they go to Howie's grandmother, who tells the tale of the ancient battle between the vampires and the leprechauns. Suddenly, it all becomes clear to the children and they must decide whose side they are to come down on. When the struggle between Mrs. Jeepers and Mr. O'Grady reaches the decision point, they intervene, leading one to victory.
This is a simple adventure tale that plays on one of the universal prejudices of elementary school children, that one or more of their teachers are not human. That makes it a fun tale and of course there is a happy ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars He is REALLY short! But a leperchaun!?
Yea the guy's short, but do you think it is more important to focus on that or that he is trying to steal the gem around Mrs. Jeepers neck. It's your opinion, but just think about it.

I gave it 5 stars because it was fun to read and, hey what if there are leperchauns teaching B-Ball! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
This is a really good Bailey School Kids story. The fact that the leprechaun can do more basketball tricks than all the other kids is hilarious. Overall it was good. But please be aware that when you read this story it triggers your mind into thinking leprechauns are real but they really aren't. If that happens to you my suggestion is to read one chapter of the story each day then you won't think that leprechauns are real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars cool!
There aree some weird grownups in Bailey city but could the singing track coach with long hair really be a magical mermaid?

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written Kids' Story
Mermaids Don't Run Track is a good book for 3-5th graders. The characters are action oriented from the first page, and immediately face two interesting mysteries concerning the camp director and the track coach. The Bailey School kids suspect one is a werewolf and the other a mermaid. The art work is also very good and adds detail and interest to the story. The book is approximately 7,000 words long.

A similar book for the same age group which I would recommend is "Abby and the bicycle caper."

4-0 out of 5 stars Liked how Eddie was always trying to be the big shot.

Product Description
• Provide a more enjoyable and motivating experience for young learners.
• Gain the skills necessary to apply a tactical approach to any sport.
• Use modified game play to create a developmentally appropriate environment for learning.

Sport Foundations for Elementary Physical Education: A Tactical Games Approach is the first book to provide a comprehensive, applied, and field-tested plan for using tactical games teaching in elementary school.

If you’re a teacher or coach working with children in second through fifth grade, you’ll find this approach increases students’ motivation, enhances their tactical awareness, and leads to improved skill development.

Written by the authors of the highly popular Teaching Sport Concepts and Skills: A Tactical Games Approach, this book teaches the tactical games approach by game category: invasion games, net/wall games, striking/fielding games, and target games.

This approach to teaching tactics, skills, and off-the-ball movements using modified or conditioned games allows greater flexibility for the teacher. What’s more, it increases the transfer of tactics and skills across games for students and allows students to experience the excitement of play before practicing specific skills.

For each game category, the book presents three progressive levels of units containing up to 30 detailed lesson plans. Each of the 91 lessons is designed to allow teachers flexibility in planning and progression and includes

• a tactical problem,
• lesson focus,
• objective,
• games,
• practice tasks, and
• sets of problem-solving questions and answers for ongoing assessment.

In addition to clearly explaining the concepts of tactical teaching, the authors provide a wealth of practical material for teaching and assessment. In particular, the chapter on assessment provides sample tools for authentic assessment in the psychomotor, cognitive, behavioral and social, and affective learning domains. Another chapter details how to build a curriculum using the games approach.

Sport Foundations for Elementary Physical Education: A Tactical Games Approach will enable you to teach elementary-level games and sports more effectively. ... Read more

Product Description

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports provides extensive recommendations for reducing catastrophic injuries, preventing deaths in athletic programs, and making sports safer and more enjoyable.

Data compiled for the first time in one convenient source, this timely resource is based on results of more than 10 years of study by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. The authors discuss what types of injuries are most prevalent, who sustains the injuries, and why and where they occur. Unlike most of the material available in this area, Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports includes both men's and women's individual and team sports.

The authors bring reality to the statistics by presenting case reports of catastrophic injuries at the high school and college level. Readers will learn

- how head and spine injuries occur;
- the frequency and causes of deaths in athletes;
- catastrophic injury data in football;
- how injuries are sustained in team sports--soccer, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, and lacrosse;
- the incidence of injuries in individual sports--gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, track and field, and cheerleading; and
- general guidelines for injury prevention as well as sport-specific recommendations.

Each chapter concludes with helpful references and tables of relevant statistics.

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports is the eighth volume in the HK Sport Science Monograph Series.

Product Description
Samurai Principles & Practices that Will Help Preteens & Teens in School, Sports, Social Activities & Choosing Careers is based on the training and lessons used by samurai parents during the nearly 800 years that they ruled Japan...training and lessons that made the samurai one of the most extraordinary groups of people in any society in any time in history.

The training and lessons were designed to teach children discipline, respect for others, self-respect, diligence, honesty, a high regard for the truth, taking absolute responsibility for their actions, using emotional intelligence, using intuitive intelligence, understanding nature, keeping themselves well-groomed, and more...all things that are desirable in human beings.

This book, which is primarily aimed at parents who must make choices on how their children are raised, describes these lessons in a concise style that both parents and young people can readily understand. The author maintains that the key to turning young children into mature adults begins with the discipline of martial arts, particularly karate. He recommends that all boys and girls be enrolled in karate schools from around the age of five. ... Read more

The rise and fall of the automotive industry, the Motown record label's emergence and eventual relocation, social and racial unrest, and the polarization of one of America's great cities has not slowed the love and passion Detroiters-city and suburban dwellers alike-share for prep basketball. ...
