3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, suspicious motives
The emphasis of this book is on "new sports and fitness", which is defined by the author as being non-competitive, safe, and inclusive of all players. This kind of sports and fitness is an excellent approach for young children. This book offers many ways to help teach kids new and fun ways to exercise and work together collaboratively.Apart from sports, other areas touched upon include yoga, t'ai chi, and meditations on self-acceptance.

While there are many good ideas given here, practice may not be as simple as shown.I strongly encourage that children get parental or teacher guidance when performing some of the activities in this book.I can remember beingabout 10 years old and trying some of the yoga activities described in this book unsupervised.I strained my neck very badly during one of the stretches.

Over and over in this book is the advocacy of non-competitiveness, and it is this element which makes the book distinctive in comparison to others. However, this emphasis is so strong (making a point to denigrate commercial competitive sports) that I soon became suspicious of the author's motives. On pages 96 and 97 is a glowing article on "Chairman Mao's Exercise Program".In it, Tom Schneider praises the program and how cooperative all of the participants are.Another article on page 124 describing the New Games Festival expresses a hope that New Games will someday replace military games as performed by the U.S. Armed Forces. All of this leaves me wondering how much Schneider wrote this book to teach exercise, and how much he wrote this book as a way to covertly spread Socialist propaganda to children. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Enemies Together
The book I read for my homework is "Soccer Duel".Soccer Duel is a great sports story about this boy named Renny and another boy named Bryce.Bryce is the best in the leuge. When Renny andBryce first played each other Renny won. They won every game even aginst the Ornge Crush. The Ornge Crush has a player named Turk Walters. He checked Renny twice. Finaly Turk was called out of the game. Rennys team won. At a restraunt Renny told Bryce what happend. Turk heard it and yelled at Bryce. At the last game Rennys team won and Renny took home the MVP. Bryce was sad but proud of Renny.

Soccer Duel
Matt christopher
Little ,Brown, and Company

Do you like sports?Well I sure do, and if you do too, you definitely want to read Soccer Duel which is a sports fiction book and just one out of the many books in the sports series by Matt Christopher. In this book a boy named Renny just moved in to town. In his old town he was the star of his team but in this new town the coach doesn't give Renny a chance to show off how good he is because he is always sitting on the bench. But, in one of his games against the best team in the league, the Yellow Jackets who are undefeated the Blue Hornet's, "Renny's team," star center striker breaks his ankle. Renny has to go in to the game and even, though they were down by three when Renny entered, Renny showed his coach how good he was by scoring four goals and winning the game for his team. Then, the very upset Bryce, the best player on the Yellow Jackets, pretends to be nice to Renny, until the final game when the Blue Hornets are playing the Orange Crush to see who goes to the championship. The Yellow Jackets were already in. Bryce tells the very large defensemen on the Orange Crush to foul Renny behind the ref's back so he will get hurt and not be able to play and the Orange Crush will make it to the championship, instead of the Blue Hornets because Bryce was scared to play Renny. But then the plan backfired and the ref saw the big kid fouling Renny and he got ejected from the game. The Blue Hornets won. Read the book to find out who will win the three game championship.
I would probably say that the main character is Renny. He is very athletic and fast, he is also confident, respectful, and nice. His parents are divorced which makes Renny sad because he only gets to see his dad every once and a while. This character, I think, was very important to the story. The secondary character in the book is a boy named Bryce who is really mean and is very strong and good at soccer. He has a powerful kick and is pretty fast, but not as fast as Renny. His parents are also divorced just like Renny's parents are. And the third most important character is Norm. You could pretty much call him a nerd, he is very smart, he has red hair and freckles, and he is not athletic at all. When Renny first moved there Norm was his first and only friend. Some of the other characters in the book include Isaac, Eric, Coach Harrison, Jack, Convoy , Coach Mcmaster, Jordan, and Charlie but all of those characters were not important enough to describe in this paragraph.
I would say that the character that I connected the most to would be Renny because I am pretty fast and good at soccer,I am also confident. This book is part of as series of 64 books all about sports and there are probably more to come. Whatever sport you like you could find a book about it if you look for the Matt Cristopher series. The age group that might enjoy this book the most are people ages 8-13. It is a pretty easy read that you could get through pretty fast if you need A.R. points or something like that. There were a couple of twists in the book but I would say the biggest twist would be Renny's team was not expected to win the game that led up to the championship. Actually, they were not even expected to make it that far, they hadn't even won a game before Renny started to play. And that is why I think that you should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next in the Series
SOCCER DUEL continues the Matt Christoper soccer series.
The exciting SOCCER HALFBACK is the first book.

Plenty of soccer action!

5-0 out of 5 stars the soccer cool
this book is kind of like my live because, in my soccer games i always play left striker but there is one thing that is different that my parent's aren't diborsed so i am cool with that
this book shows a lot of pation with people that like soccer and that's why i rated as a five star book.
i really recoment this book to everybody ... Read more

I read Arthur and the Goalie Ghost.
Thought it was an ok book because it did not give enough detail and it was not a good story. I would recommend this book for ages 6-9 because it is a fairly easy book to read. And it is in easy language to read and under stand. I recommend this book because it is about sports and it was easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, a great series
I loved this book because I didn't really know about Joe DiMaggio and I really love baseball. This book was fun to read because it hadinteresting fact about his life.It started out when he was ten and went through his life until he died.My favorite part was when he got a triple when he was a rookie. I was really surprised that there were nine children in his family.I readthis book because I had readthe Lou Gehrig book in this series and I had really enjoyed that one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Talented and Great Joe Dimaggo
This book was great! It tells the story of the immortal Joe Dimaggio, the Yankee Clipper. It begins with Joe's childhood, growing up in San Francisco, California. Joe's family was very poor so he did not have a lot of the things other kids had. he became interested in baseball because it didn't cost anything to play. Joe and the other kids in the the neighborhood would have pick up games and Joe soon found he was a very good baseball player. he decided that if he was going to be great he needed to practice more. In school all Joe could think about was baseball. Then in October,1929 the stock market crashed and Joe quit school to help support his family. It was during this time that Joe joined a neighborhhod baseball team called Rossi Olive Oil Company. Soon he was being noticed by major league scouts who were impressed with the 15 year old. By the time Joe was 18 years old he was playing with the minor league Seals and had a hitting streak of 48 games to tie the minor league record. The New York Yankees took notice of the talented young player and decided to sign him to major league contract in 1936.Joe played for the Yankees for 15 years and had the memorable and historical 56 game hitting streak that still stands today. Joe was a 3 time MVP and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. In 1969 Joe was voted the greatest living ball player. Joe was also honored in 1976 with the Medal of Freedom by President Ford. Joe died in 1999 at age 84 in Hollywood, Florida.

Customer Reviews (4)

2-0 out of 5 stars Far too many references to the occult
Sylvester Coddmyer III (Syl) is coming off a phenomenal season where he was hitting home runs all the time. However, this season he is suffering a crisis of confidence and is warming the bench. Last season a mysterious friend named Mr. Baruth had appeared and tutored him, giving him the confidence to succeed. Suddenly, another mysterious friend called Cheeko appears and by applying his pointers, Syl is able to regain his all-star form. Unfortunately, Cheeko is a bit of a dirty player and Syl's relationship with some of his friends begins to suffer. However, at the end, Syl understands that confidence comes from within and that playing fair is the best way to approach the game of baseball.
While the overall message of the book is a good one, the approach is of questionable value. Mr. Baruth is the ghost of Babe Ruth, the greatest hitter in the history of baseball and Cheeko is the ghost of Eddie Cicotte one of the ringleaders of the group known as the "Black Sox." "Black Sox" refers to the Chicago White Sox team of 1919 where some of the players deliberately tried to lose the World Series in order to enrich a group of gamblers. The occult aspects are further enhanced by the actions of Syl's friend Snooky and his regular references to astrology. Baseball is such a dynamic and exciting game that references to the occult detract from what should be the main theme, keeping your confidence level high, which is the most critical point needed for success.

4-0 out of 5 stars Return of the Home Run Kid
Sylvester was a kidthat the last year only hit homers but these year he was playing badly. His coach Mr.Baruth asked him to be a bench warmer for the Redbirds team.Sylvester, in his way home, knew a misterious man called Cheeko who helped him to play better this season. Sylvester now is playing hot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Return of the Home Run Kid
Sylvester Coddmyer III was a pretty nice kid who grew up in a nice family. He was an only child at the age of 12. In the past year Sylvester had an almost perfect homerun season, he had Mr. baruth's coaching tips to help him get through. The next year came along and there was no Mr. Barthum to help him out. He started out as a bench warmer, if he ever got to play it would just be for an inning or so. One day on the way home from practice a man named Cheeko said do you want me to help you out a little. Sylvester said sure, they practiced about 4 times aweek and befor you know it Sylvester is back hitting homeruns. Inside Sylvester really wondered who this Cheeko guy was anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is cool how he hit home runs as he did last season.
Last season, Sylvester Codmyre III hit home runs every time but once, when he was up. But in his second season, again he started out slumping. Then he started hitting them back into home runs and he started being good atdefense again. It is a good book because it's the second version butSylvester has a different helper. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reluctant Reader Approved

Every day after school Will is bored to tears. How can he spend his days? His mom and dad work and leave him at home bored. Will tries out for 3 sport's teams at school, but fails. Their suggestions don't solve his problem.
He learns there is a mountain bike club. The best thing about the mountain bike club is you don't have to try out to join. Many of the club members are popular, too. He finally has a way to spend his afternoons other than watching television and playing video games.
A subplot exposes peer pressure and Will overcoming it. A rift between mountain bikers and hikers and horseback riders is revealed and resolved.
The vocabulary that is used is geared to middle grade readers. The subject matter will appeal to boys and reluctant readers. The pace and prose will sustain a child's interest. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Bike Mania
Mountain Bike Mania by Matt Christopher is about a boy named Will who loves to watch TV. Will loves to eat candy-covered popcorn while he waits for his mom to get home.
When Will goes to school, he gets bullied a lot. Then Will discovers a mountain biking club. Then Will asks his mom for a new mountain bike.
I liked the book because I have a mountain bike at home. There was a lot of biking action. I would recommend this book because it was interesting.

This book is about a kid (Will Mathews) who is very lousy and in't good at any sports. But one day he goes hiking only to see three mountain bikers that are having a blast. After Will saw them he jouined the club that they were in and soon was having as much fun as the people they saw.Unfortunatly his friend hates to mountain bike and that startes a whole mess that no one knows if it will be over. This book was so good that I read on my own.(I don't like to read that much)If you are looking for a good book and love sports (speceialy mountain biking) then I strongly, absolutly recomend this book to all yong sports lovers for this is the book for YOU!Although the book is not fully about mountain biking(I do wish that it had) it was still a great book.Of course their are probably better books out their that have your name on them and some of them might be one of Matt Christerphor (the aothore) ... I have not received this book yet!!!!!I tried to tracked the book using the tracking number, but all it said was that the book was delivered. The United States Post Office says that they received a notice from Amazon that an item will be delivered, but that the item has not arrived yet.I lookedall over the Amazon website to help find my book, but could not find ant help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not his best efforts...
I was not a fan of this one enough to give it more than a two star review and a sentence for a critic.I'd like a refund.Instead - I sold it on eBay for half my money back.I accidentally gave th9is one 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great boys sports nut book
I gave this book as a gift and the 3rd. grader said he realy liked it.He is a sports nut and likes to play many sports.I wanted to encourage him to read over the Christmas school break and it worked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my nephews!
I gave And Nobody Got Hurt! Books 1 and 2 sets for Christmas for each of my nephews, both 10 years old. One started reading as soon as he opened his gift and was finished with one book by the next day. The other newphew isn't much into reading, yet he also started to read. Needless to say, this nephew's parents were delighted.

1-0 out of 5 stars RIPPED OFF
I purchased three of these to give to my grandsons and we were not happy with them. We love Len Berman's spots on TV so we thought the books would be entertaining gifts. They are dull and printed on inexpensive newsprint type paper with no coloful illustrations. The stories are tedious and a few drawings in vivid colors might have perked them up. I would not recommend this book. Sorry Len and say hello to Shelly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear reader
I really liked the book. It gives excellent tips on soccer. The tips come from a little boy that comes from England to America. The little boy's name is Mark. And his parents are getting divorced and he comes from England and moves to America to live with his grandparents. This book is great it shows you how the little boy over came his challenges. I like how he doesn't let any of the kids on the team get to him because he has to live with his grandparents. This is a great book. I suggest it for any reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Comeback Challenge was Great!
I thought that The Comeback Challenge was great. Mark, who was on the scorpions team, was angry that his parents, who kept on fighting, and they each wanted him to live with him or her, because they were getting a divorce. Currently, he had to live with his grandparents, until it was settled. Also, the team captain Lance, didn't really like Mark that much. At the end Mark stays with his grandparents another year. Mark was the one to tell the judge that. Also at the end the problem with Lance was solved, and Mark was elected captain for the next soccer season. ... Read more

Soccer Scoop

This book is about a boy who goes by the name of Mac who plays on the school's soccer team. This boy likes to play soccer and he plays as the goalie.Mac kept finding cartoons in the paper that were making fun of him. At the end of the season the cougars had won the championship game in soccer. The part that I liked the most in this book was when the cougars won the championship game for the school. The part that I didn't like the most was the cartoons in the papers that were making fun of Mac in the book. The effects on this book made me want to read more books on this author.I recommend this book to kids of the age of 10-13 who like sports a lot.

I have read many books that I enyojed but when I read Soccer Scoop I couldn't think of a better book. Soccer Scoop is one of the best books and also it's written by one of my favorite authors,Matt Christoper. This book is about a boy named Mac who's the best goalie of the season and one day when he was going to school with his friend Doggie, that is his friend all of a sudden when they entered the school everybody started making fun of Mac. The author Matt Christoper sets the scene at the soccer field where a loy of mac;s games go on. He also set's the scene at Mac's school where Mac found out that someone was making fun fo him,and also the bus where mac found out something about the cartoonst.
