Product Description
Sheds light on the emergence and development of secondary school athletics in the setting of the boarding school.

Axel Bundgaard has produced a meaningful work on the important but little-told history of interschool athletics, exploring the introduction and nature of sport in the controlled environment of the American boarding school.

Beginning in the late eighteenth century, American educators looked to the English public school as the educational archetype for producing good men, good Christians, and good leaders. The British incorporation of sport into the process of education, however, took root only slowly in the United States, where it seemed alien to Puritan values extolling hard work and deploring play as wasted time. Only when educators were convinced that sport was an essential tool in the process of raising the next generation by building character, team spirit, and leadership did the informal physical play initiated by students in early schools begin to evolve toward the highly organized, school-sponsored sports of today.

Using archival material from several eastern boarding schools founded in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Bundgaard traces this process from its beginnings in the muscular Christianity prevailing in the boarding schools of Victorian England-most notably Rugby. There, athletics and the prefect system - older boys shaping the manners and morals of younger ones - were used to mold youth into "Christian gentlemen," and it was believed that the seeds of future military victories were planted on the school playing fields. Bundgaard shows how this model of sport and character building was gradually absorbed into the classical curricula of private education in America, and then continues to chronicle the dramatic changes in this model through the first decade of the twentieth century, as educational philosophies evolved and an ideal of physical vigor and "conduct befitting a gentleman" emerged.

Drawing on archival sources at Groton, Andover, Exeter, St. Paul's Suffield, Williston, Woodberry Forest, and Worcester Academy - interviews, personal communications, school newspapers, and histories of various institutions - Bundgaard provides a new critical perspective on the evolution of play and sports for schoolboys. This book will stimulate research on the broader subject of American secondary school athletics and pique the interest of sport historians, educators, and a general audience. ... Read more

Product Description
When science lets us fulfill our greatest desires, where do we stop? Should Barry Bonds’s startling achievements be listed in the record book with an asterisk because he has been accused of using steroids? Did performance-enhancing drugs play a role in Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour de France victories? And what does Arnold Schwarzenegger’s continued success say about the appeal of his steroid-fueled bodybuilding persona?

In the tradition of And the Band Played On, award-winning journalist Shaun Assael looks at America’s complicated love affair with steroids and how it has grown into the country’s—and perhaps the world’s—most insidious drug addiction.

Steroid Nation presents a chilling portrait of a nation enamored of artificially pumped-up success. Chronicling steroid use far beyond the headlines, it begins with the bodybuilders of Venice Beach in the 1970s and continues through to the NFL’s Raiders of the ’80s and ’90s and the baseball scandals of today. Assael also reveals the dramatic story of the godfather of the steroid movement: Dan Duchaine, who wrote The Original Underground Steroid Handbook in 1981.

Part detective story, part medical investigation, and part sociological examination, Steroid Nation is a groundbreaking work on the most compelling story in the sports world today. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Scare Tactics
Millions have used and continue to use steroids with no ill effects whatsoever. There is no science that proves steroids present a risk greater than the benefits. It is rational to believe that the risks of unsupervised abuse of steroids may be dangerous, but it would take millions of dollars and decades to find this out and there is no-one who will submit to such a study.Waste your money on this book if you like undocumented gossip and celebrity titilation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
After I finished the book I watched Bigger, Stronger, Faster again and was able to pick out characters the book talked about.Fascinating stuff, sort of cops and robbers but Feds and cheaters instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but Incomplete
The cops and robbers part of this book is excellent, as the author draws nice profiles of the major characters, and follows the legislative and legal history of steroids. He keeps up interest as you get to "know" the enforcers, the "gurus", scientists, coaches and others including the famous governor of my state. He also does a good job of explaining how steroids and other enhancement drugs work in your body. I think he was pretty fair in not overly demonizing the bad guys or hero worshiping the good guys.

However, I was frustrated by much that was left out. For example, in the first chapter he talks about a steroid advocate being in regular contact with strength coaches of major NCAA schools without identifying the schools. He also doesn't give much information on what the long term effects of these drugs are. He gives a few scary examples of individuals who died before their time, and in a late chapter he mentions scores of ex-wresters dying at an early age (but doesn't say what they died of - though he implies it's of heart problems).

Finally, he doesn't get into the usage of steroids in the beef and poultry industries and what those health consequences might be, and / or how they are regulated.

I'm afraid we're still waiting for the definitive book on steroids in society, but it's a good read with some interesting information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigger, Stronger, Faster...Easier to just watch the movie
Steroid Nation gives a great overview of how steroids initially hit mainstream bodybuilding and the world of professional sports. The historical battles of the regulatory agencies versus the users/dealers/manufacturers of steroids is chronicled all the way up until 2007.

It was easy to read, and is very much a history book. However, I wouldn't advise anyone else to read it. Why? I saw the movie "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" and it is almost verbatim with what is in this book. The movie is also much more entertaining. The book advantage is that it definitely has more finer details, such as dates and names.

So read the book if you haven't seen the movie, but otherwise, pick one or the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening read
Excellent book on how steroids moved from the gym culture in California to mainstream America, from professional to high school athletics and strange way we view steroids - classifying them as dangerous drugs while giving those who make, distribute or use them little more than a slap on the wrist.I liked the personal anecdotes about the people involved, which lent a lot of color to a very throughly researched book.I'm looking forward to learning more about this topic, especially as the Beijing Olympics unfold. It will be interesting to see how the IOC handles the issue this go around. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Wilderness Training Book
Great illustrations, instructions, etc... A must have for anyone learning survivalism, a great gift for boys and men, and of course Mom's who love to camp.

3-0 out of 5 stars An overview of the subject-NOT a manual
You'll notice thatother reviewers have described this book as a "good introduction" and I think that's probably an apt description. Yes, there are nice color photgraphs and drawings. The author's described background would indicate that he's qualified to comment at length on the subject. The editorial review states that the book is more international in scope, describing wilderness techniques in foreign lands. It's true that the book talks about survival on other continents, but I have to say that its treatment of those hostile (and likely even more unfamiliar to most of the book's readers)environments is more superficial than its treatment of general survival techniques. What this book does is give a very broad overview of the serious subject of survival. To be well learned and therefore genuinely useful, such techniques require in-depth, detailed study. This book, however,is sort of a coffee table book of survival. I am tempted to say that it is a survival book for people who might rather fantasize about wilderness ventures than actually go on them.I won't go so far as to say that it is a useless book; there is a fair bit of good information in it. But if I were to compile a list of survival books that I've read..which would number closer to 100 than 50...I would put this one near the bottom. It is most useful as a supplement to an established survival library. If you're looking for a good first book on survival I would recommend Wiseman's SAS Survival. I would also advise any novice contemplating a trip into remote areas to find a text dealing specifically with that environment, and to first getREAL experience with a seasoned group of outdoorsmen.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Wilderness Training Book
Gives the reader a good place to start. This book is loaded with illustrations and pictures giving a broad range of topics to the reader. I would suggest reading in more detail and study of Wilderness Survival/Training with other books before venturing out into the vast remote wilderness areas. I still find myself reviewing the book periodically. It is a keeper.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money for a better book
Like hellcatty from Hong Kong, my version is also called a survival manual. While there is some information of use in the book, in most areas it is sadly lacking (although it has pretty pictures). For example, on page 63, it shows Mr. McManners doing a bow drill fire.I'd sure like to see him do it in person if this photo accurately portrays his technique.Unlesshe has arms like Lou Ferrigno, that top hand of his is going to be all over the place.Similarly, on the same page, his portrayal of hand drill fire making leaves a lot to be desired. He states that the hand drill fire technique 'only works effectively in hot climates, where the wood is really dry.'
It also works very effectively, at least in my area, in the winter, when it also can be quite dry.His drill also looks somewhat top heavy and unbalanced.Overall, as stated in my title, save your money for a much better book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner
The version I bought has a different book title, which is name'Hugh McManners Outdoor Survival Guide'. I found thebook title is misleading, since the content of the book is not much about 'survival'.The recent book title is much better. This is not a manual,I recommend it to all wilderness training beginner. ... Zone defense is a type of defense used in team sports, which is the alternative to man-to-man defense; instead of each player guarding a corresponding player on the other team, each defensive player is given an area, or a "zone", to cover. A zone defense can be used in virtually all sports where a defending team is present. Frank Lindley, Newton, KS High School basketball coach from 1914 to 1945, was among the first to use the zone defense and other innovations in the game and authored numerous books about basketball.
