5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly detailed book of FLW's Light Screens
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is a fan of FLW's work but especially for glass artists who are looking at the design aspects of FLW's light screens.I have a very large library of books on FLW's work both architecture and design and I think just about every book written on the subject of his 'light screens'.I only say this to point out that of all the book that I have on the subject that not one is more definitive in illustrating size, shape, design and lead used.In several instances even the placement of the windows in the building is shown to great effect... I found this particularly interesting in the section on the Coonley Playhouse.I have prettier books on the subject, no doubt. But for raw technical data that is beautifully illustrated and easy to grasp, look no further, this is the book.As a glass artist, this book has been invaluable to me.Many thanks to Dennis Casey for this excellent addition to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a great book for the one that love F.Ll.Wright and his glasswork
This book is just a must for the one that is thinking of entering the "the big job's" in glass art works in the style of F.Ll.Wright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool
Casey strikes again! This is a beautifully laid-out book, with enough detail to make it a great tool for new windows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.
I was looking for examples of Frank Lloyd Wright's glass work and there are several books with patterns but few examples of the designs in color. This book has the best selection of colored examples without doubt. It also goes into the type of came that was used, and that helps me understanding why they look they way they do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for ages 6 and up (including adults)
I bought this to expand my children's coloring skills past the coloring book stage. They fell in love with complex and not-so-complex pictures. I'd hear them debating between the two color choices for each picture and pouring over which picture to do next. It looked like fun, so one day when I needed to relax, I picked up the book and picked a picture. Before long I was coloring and forgetting all my cares in the world. Now I routinely pick one to color, too.

We own MANY Klutz products. Get this one for your whole household.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
I absolutely love the patterns in this book! There's a wide variety and they are well represented with color plates of each finished pattern.Be forewarned, these patterns are not for beginners, but something to aspire to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look more like paintings than patterns
The patterns look more like paintings than anything else.

Admittedly, I'm planning to use this as a coloring book (much better patterns than anything designated for that purpose).

There are landscapes (hot air balloons, a church in the countryside, a few farms, two desert sunset, some coastlines, several mountain landscapes, and a tropical sunset), and flowers/fruit (sunflowers, tropical flowers, hibiscus, water lilies, grapes, pumpkins), and lots of animals (lots of herons, koi, pheasants, horses, a spider, a cardinal, a bear, a pair of bald eagles, a lion, ducks, peacocks, chickadees, an elk, a Rockfish, a butterfly, and a pair of wolves).

It's a good thing that they included color versions, because a few patterns (like 15, a Carolina Landscape) can look like a bunch of squiggles in black and white, but are really pretty in color. ... Read more

Product Description
Maidens, Myths & Mermaids from Wardell Publications stained glass introduces 40 designs for stained glass windows with scenes from mythology and history that are realistically translated into art glass designs. For centuries people have used mythology to describe and explain many great events of human experience. The 40 spellbinding stained glass panels in this collection illustrate the legends of love, adventure, exploration, and conquest. They examine the folklore of the Mermaid, of chivalrous Knights, dancing Maidens, Kings on horseback, consorts, musicians, lovers and so much more. Descriptive text accompanies each design providing a fascinating insight into the artists challenge and offers solutions with hints and tips for glass selection and project strategy. Every project includes the pattern line drawing. 24 projects are shown fabricated with a color photograph while the remaining 16 are rendered as a textured line drawing with color suggestions. Plus 2 designs are provided as full size patterns printed on a bonus pullout page in the back of the book. The author presents an overview of how she turns an oil painting into a stained glass design, plus detailed instructions on how to enlarge a pattern drawing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a head above the rest
I only bought this book after I've already learned the techniques in a class. I've bought it because I've seen it from someone else and I knew I have to have it.
The explanations are very clear and easy to follow. I've even learned a few tips that the class instructor didn't mention. And most projects can be finished in a week-end.
The projects are very beautiful and special, some based on optical illusions created by mirror pieces, and others on 3D geometrical play. Most can be used, not just toys to keep around the house and collect dust. And the toys make for amazing presents.
By all means, go ahead and buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important and Beautiful
If you have any interest in the beauty of glass, you should have this book. With over 800 images in full color, this richly illustrated volume could be savored only as a visual experience, while at the same time it has been written with intelligence, style and grace for anyone with an interest in glass. That includes the casual browser of art books (like me) and also, I believe, professional scholars and serious collectors. As beautifully produced as any coffee table book, it also is an engaging and important study of a largely neglected aesthetic medium.

People who consider themselves part of the art glass world will find much that is new here, while the superb writing has a wit and sparkle that is largely foreign to strictly academic treatments. It is the writing that sets this book apart and gives it its appeal across the spectrum of readers.Rarely do you find a big book that you can actually read. The authors have a real talent for setting the stage of each chapter, describing the people and the art works, and especially the artistic challenges of each period, with an eye for apt details and description.

The success of this work may be due to the unusual collaboration of two authors, each noted in her own field: a British artist in stained glass and an American decorative arts scholar, researcher, and curator. The result is a thoughtful balance of perceptions, informed by history while grounded in the immediate response to the work of art.

The book has several key themes. It is first a review of the roots of contemporary art glass from the revival, in the late nineteenth century, of medieval techniques for making stained glass windows, then tracing an arc to the world-wide popularity of glass art today as an abstract expression of form, color, and emotion. The interconnection between flat stained glass and `studio' glass (blown, cold worked, etc.) has rarely been acknowledged and has never been explored within the same volume, to my knowledge.Secondly, the book celebrates and documents art glass as a globally evolving aesthetic medium, providing substantive examples from Japan and Australia along with the UK, Europe, and the US.A chapter devoted to Dale Chihuly's internationalinfluence calls him a "rock star" of glass; since I suppose more has been written about Chihuly than all other glass artists combined, this label is presumably an example of British restraint. It is, however, in the section on those artists who studied under Chihuly that the authors reveal the wider connections within the glass world. This perspective, which might be considered the third theme of the book, is that glass art coexists with architecture and the `fine arts' (sculpture and painting) within an intellectual framework of theories about art.Not just a craft driven by incremental improvements in, say, kiln technology, for at least the last 150 years glass art has been a medium of ideas. Those ideas and their evolution are the real subject of this book.

Like most people, I am more likely to buy a reproduction in a museum store and to display it on the kitchen table with apples in it, than to own a Chihuly. This book fed my amateur's appetite for substantive big-picture understanding of the evolution of glass art, without bogging me down in minutiae of how scholarship itself evolved. It seems most critics are more interested in dissecting each other's tiny theories than in helping people see with clarity the work in front of them. That is why this book is such a breath of fresh air. It is written both for people who slept through art history classes in college and for the museum curator with specialized expertise but a willingness to think of glass in a new way.

The only thing I can suggest if the book is reprinted, is to include indications of size of some of the pieces.I found myself wondering sometimes if an illustration represented a six-inch or six-foot piece. While I missed seeing some of the best-known monuments of art glass, these are available elsewhere and I appreciated that the illustrations are generally perfect and convincing in support of the text.In fact, it is refreshing to see a book of this beauty that is specifically NOT a bunch of best hits cobbled together around an unconvincing narrative.Instead, I find this an absorbing and thoughtful argument that engages the mind, challenges the eye to see more deeply, and offers new insights that I will be thinking about whenever I look at the windows in a church, glass objects in a museum or antique store, or at the paperweight in front of me (my one piece of truly legitimate art glass, its mysteries will never stop unfolding no matter how often I look at it, and it is the reason I bought this book). This book offers far more than I expected, more illustrations, more ideas, and better writing. It deserves serious attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a treasure trove of patterns and ideas.I am an advanced stained glass artist, and these designs have opened the doors to a whole set of new design thoughts!

By themselves, the designs, even though some date to the 1860's, seem fresh and modern. The patterns are softly colored, and by just changing the colors, a whole new window appears.

If you are at all attracted to creating stained glass, by all means, pick up this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful patterns...
A very nice book of art nouveau patterns...many of the patterns are large/complicated, but it does have some patterns that are doable for less experienced crafters. The only flaw in the book is that it doesn't have black/white images to accompany the full-color images, which means you'll have to scan it into Photoshop and fuss with it a bit to get a simple/crisp printable pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This collection of windows has inspired my creative juices.I have already
used the book to design sidelights and rakehead windows for my front entrance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Nouveau at it's splendid best!
Although the designs in this book may not be for the beginning stained glass artist, the color combinations and whimsy incorporated in them will most certainly get your creative juices flowing!I spent several hours just thinking of how I might take just small segments of some of these masterpieces of glasswork to create my own projects.Although Art Nouveau as a whole "look" may be too much for some people, there are certain aspects of these works that are timeless and would fit with nearly any other design genre.Great book for any artisan or craftsperson in search of marvelous design ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all stained glass enthusiasts.
Although the book does cover some basic stained glass techniques, which the reader may or may not possess, it does contain some very intersting tips along the way.Everyone can benefit from reviewing the basic skills and techniques. The book does give you enough basic information regarding box making that then can be carried over to other box projects. It could have included more patterns, but I was not looking for a book containing a multitude of patterns for a basic box.As with most stained glass projects, it allows the user to be creative once the you have mastered the fundamentals. It does contain rather detailed and easy to follow instructions on box construction. This book was great for my needs. It is well written, very detailed with a lot of excellent illustrations. The author has done a great job again!

2-0 out of 5 stars nice but only makes the cover box
First. The title is wrong. the book only shows you how to make ONE box. The one on the cover. It apologetically then gives you "patterns" for others which are no more than the same box with different lids. If you do basic stain glass, that's a no brainer. There are a couple other small patterns stuffed in the back but you would have to scale them way up as they are mere thumbnails of real patterns.

Second. The box they DO make has incredibly detailed instructions with clear color pictures and step by step "if-you-mess-it-up-it's-not-our-fault" attention to detail. In THAT, it is a great book.

The book spends the first 57 pages explaining basic stained glass cutting and soldering technique.Fine if you want a whole course, but my assumption (I know, dangerous word) is that if you're looking at building a box, you have your basic technique down, give us more and different box types. the next seventy or so pages show how to make the one box pictured on the cover (and it's only an "or so" pages because there are still interspersed directions for basic glass cutting and assembly, not "box making specific" techniques). Following that are the few pages of alternative patterns -- not boxes, just other patterns to plug into the top frame. then an entire section on repairing stained glass. Not a thorough section and not really sure why it was put in the book unless they assume again you will drop something through the box quick enough to need to know how to fix it.
There is finally a FOUR PAGE gallery of pictures of boxes a couple with domed lids and pentagon shapes that would have been nice to actually show technique for, but alas, no, just one rectangular box appears in the book itself.

I was however looking for a book on making different styles of boxes, perhaps with non standard non square corners. I was hoping for more than flat lids, that simply changed the arrangement of pieces. I have another fourteen page book from the seventies that shows more than this book does in all it's pages.

so if you're looking for a book on different styles and types of boxes, pass. if you want to make the box on the cover, you couldn't find a better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Box Lovers and Others
If you love making boxes this book is for you and if you are new to stained glass this book is for you. There are also simple beginner patterns in the book. It has great picture detail, and each step is explained in terms everyone can understand.I made the box on the cover and the steps were right on target and it can out beautiful. It includes great pro tips and helpful hints along the way. Novice or experience this a great book for your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stained Glass Course
A coworker brought this book to work and I took a look at it. Just looking at it ten minutes I knew I had to have it.Its the most complete book on working with stained glass in so many unbelievable ways. I especially liked the idea of glass panels made through what they called applique. They had you gluing artglass onto a clear panel of glass then grouting a thin line inbetween the pieces. That way you can get the look without the lead came or foil. But if you want to work with came or foil they have plenty of tips on how to use it.I think this is one the best and most complete books on glass I've ever bought.

4-0 out of 5 stars exelent
In fact I had expected something else. I saw another book from Lynette Wrigley, where I found more examples on colours and forms. As I coundn't take a look inside that especific book, I think, if I had a choice to peruse on it, I would have taken another book.
But it's an exelent book.
Thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Book with a little bit of everything
I bought this book two years ago and it was very useful to start doing stained glass. It is very good in explaining different techniques, but it doesn't explain very well some basic stuff like how to cut and grind properly, how to tape the glass correctly and how to use the "lines" or pattern of the glass. It also assumes that the design is correct and it doesn't warn about the hinge effect of straight lines in the design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Lamps
I'll be honest and say that I haven't yet made any of the lampshades in this book.I got it with high-hopes of being creative, but never got the chance to make any of the really good patterns presented. That's not to discourage anyone from the book. It's well done and full of great ideas and it even grades the difficulty of the patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attractive stained glass patterns, none of them dorky
I'm just finishing the first lamp that I've made using a pattern from Northern Shades. Overall, I'm very pleased with the pattern and its instructions -- though I'm glad that I made my *first* lamp with a live teacher demonstrating the techniques.

That's not to say that you're on your own. While the book has only a single photo of each of the 25 lamps, the pictures are large and clear enough for you to get the details. The first part of the book explains the steps in lamp construction, with many black and white photos to demonstrate the process. It might have been daunting if that's all I had, however! (Or maybe I just prefer personal instruction.)

None of the designs are lame, and most of them are really pretty. The lamps range in size from an 8" diameter to 21". It's convenient to have the patterns in full size, too; you don't have to worry about inaccuracies creeping in from photocopies.

Most of all, however, I appreciate the clear shopping list for each lamp; each one is rated for difficulty, has technical specifications (such as all measurements and the number of pieces), and a materials list. You can walk into the glass shop knowning that you need 3.25 sq ft of dark green opal, 1/2 sq ft of light green, and a 2.5" vase cap.

My only caveat -- and it's not really the author's fault -- is that you have to pay attention to the availability of supplies. The lamp I chose called for kite-shaped bevels in a size that is no longer available. I did just fine by cutting kites from textured glass, but I confess that I stamped my foot in frustration, a few times, before I chose that alternative.

Great book, though. Recommended.

The paper they use for these stained glass coloring books is supercool. Just make sure to use markers. Colored pencils don't show through very well on this material.

2-0 out of 5 stars there's much better available
This is an alright book for absolute beginners, but not up to the standard of the many other books available.I would recommend 390 Traditional Stained glass designs by Hywel Harris as a much better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Large patterns for once!
This book has a relatively good coverage of Victorian era designs. The patterns are large, so photocopy and enlargment is easy and clear. Designs are also relatively simple (I would consider this book for the advanced beginner or intermediate). There are few very intricate patterns traditional of the richest stained glass panels, but you surely have a lot of very nice patterns for your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Provides Patterns for Today's Hobbiest
The first step to my using Mr. Sibbett's designs is to scan them. He provides clearly defined, good quality images that scan well at high resolution. The quality of images is not always apparent to the naked eye.The images are large enough to duplicate well without loosing detail. Formy purposes the max of three images a page at most works well. Other booksmay have more patterns but they loose quality when made larger. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting images, slightly disappointing
I would simply like to supplement the other reviews by saying a couple of things. The other reviews for this book are helpful and I won't repeat them. However there are a couple of things that were not mentioned.

I found the color palette in this book very uninspired, most of the images have a lot of orange and brown that doesn't do much for the designs or seem to have anything to do with what is depicted.

Also, I got this book in large part because one of the reviews talks about a design of a woman combing her hair in front of a volcano and that sounded so evocative. However, it is actually a picture of a volcano with a flamingo above it and a crab below it.What this image actually is seems like a example of many of the patterns to me.Kind of random and uninspiring combinations. However, this is not true of all of them and parts of some of the images are really beautiful. This book is for ideas, not patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible source book
If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super source book
Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.

The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.

You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really Art Nouveau
Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau.Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?).It is in color, though, which is nice.Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous designs
I am thrilled with this book. I have ordered other stained glass books and been disappointed by the uninspired designs. Not so with this book. The designs are fresh and inspire exploration. I have used several as starting points and then adapted them to my specific needs. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for something a little different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary treasure trove
This is the second stained glass pattern book of Anna Croyle's that I've purchased.I thought the Modern Designs pattern book was fantastic, so I pr-ordered this one through Amazon.I was thrilled when I got it & like it as much or more than Modern Designs. Her style really resonates with my own.I have used a couple of her patterns without modification, but what I like most about her patterns is the ease with which I can modify the designs & create something unique without the time-consuming process of starting from scratch.Although some of the patterns have cuts that would be extremely difficult without a saw, which I don't have, most are workable with just an old fashioned hand cutter. So far I haven't had any trouble with them.I really appreciated the variety, volume & quality of the color pictures in this book of each pattern.I highly recommend this pattern book. ...
