5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs
I love this book! They're all either floral and/or curvy designs. Just what I was looking for to do a sidelight in a doorway. I highly recommend it. It's in black and white so you have to use your imagination to color it. I just wish they put more designs in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book and great designs!
This book has great patters for doors that could be used in other applications. The only problem I found is that it does not show any colors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Variety
This volumn contains a good all-around variety of patterns and schemes. Most designs are three to a page (8.5 x 11). They require enlarging. The range of difficulty varies, most look intricate in the small size on thepage but when enlarged to window size the number of peices per square footis reasonable.

The patterns are (or can be) grouped into coordinated window sets, for example: a doorway with matching sidelights and afanlight. Most of the patterns include flowers, but not all. Some the thethemes include hummingbirds (very nice) blended with flowers, a dove, herons, sea gulls, callas, irises, daffodills, roses, tulips, morningglories, grapes with vines, dogwood (geomatical), parrots, landscapes(sailboat, sunsets with a bird and water), and geometrics (good forbevels).

I have used some of the flower details extracted from theoverall patterns. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars First in recommeded reading
After checking this book out at my local library, I have decided it is a must have as a beginner in the art of stained glass. It is not only informative, but clear and easy to understand. You are walked through theprocess step by step as though you were in a classroom. Affordable, wellwritten, and a perfect book for the introduction to stained glass. The onlyimprovement to the book would be an updated volume with color photo's,although there is an abundance of black and white photo's which are veryhelpful. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A fairly amateur look at stained glass
Back in the 60's and 70's when there was nothing else available, the first edition of this book was still a poor resource Manuel. This book promoted the idea that 50/50 solder should be used in lead came construction and 60/40 should be used when doing copper foil construction. This is just the opposite of what should be done since 60/40 has a lower melting temperature and so should be used with came to lessen the risk of melting the came.

Now that there are many more good to great books on stained glass, give this tired tome a rest and get one of the newer, better illustrated books a try. Even a video on stained glass would be better than this poor attempt to educate.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to work in stained glass
I started working in stained glass in 1979 and used the first edition of this book until the binding finally came apart and could no longer be put back together. The third edition has much more useful information on techniques and technical descriptions about working in stained glass that I recommend this to all my friends and family.

This is an outstanding reference book for anyone working in stained glass. The references are invaluable.

I recieved the book within a few days of my order, in excellent condition as advertised.I would never hesitate to order again from Four Corners Books. Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars good text but very poor photographs
This book has lots of good information and fairly comprehensive text, butI was very disappointed in the poor quality of the photographs. They seemto be snapshots rather than professional photographs illustratingtechniques and equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Pattern Designs
The mandala patterns in this book are just wonderful they really stimulate the imagination. I found myself staring at each of the black and white patterns for a long time. I will have to make copies and get busy with a large selection of colored pencils but that might be just the point, to stimulate "your" inner self to create just the right color choices you need to "feel" and work with. I am glad that this book saw its way to make it to me, I am going to have fun with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite as a little girl
I've always loved stained glass.I couldn't get enough of it.Stained glass design books were my favorite coloring books as a little girl (20ish years ago) and this particular book was my most favorite.Everything was beautiful and sweeping, and with the right markers, it all looked like jewels when held up to the light. It was a delightful surprise to find this on amazon just now. This kept me entranced and happy for hours, and if I recall correctly, the paper being of particularly good quality with little to no bleedthrough from the markers I used.

Good book of pattern for stain glass. my sister do stain glass and I got this book to get my favorite design. I remember looking at that book long ago when I was young. This is great book to make some beautiful stain glass stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Small
While there are a variety of patterns in this book, it claims the patterns are conveniently sized and ready for use.The patterns ar a little too small to use directly from the book. They need to be taken to a printer and enlarged slightly unless you want to be cutting pieces of glass so tiny they will be impossible to hold onto when assembling the project or grinding them. This is not to say all of the patterns are this way. Some of them are fine, but most are not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Representation of Tiffany Designs
Tiffany made some of the most complicated lamps ever produced, a lot of the design was created with his choice of the individual pieces of glass he used. I used these images for computer application, so the complexity waswelcome. It would require the skill level of an experienced glass artist toreproduce Tiffany-like lamps; the representations of which are widelyavailable on the Internet. I would suggest anyone considering making a lampwith actual glass, copy the tiny image (the line quality of the images isvery good) and taping it together if it is necessary to have a visual imageof the shape of the completed lamp.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
It is a good idea to have elaborate panel lamp patterns for the expert glass crafter. However, it is disappointing to see that the authors did not even bother to make the lamps themselves, or to at least give apictorial representation ofwhat the 3D project would look like oncefinished with proper perspective.I would not dare begin such elaborateprojects without the certainty that the lamps would have a pleasing, harmonious shape. ... Product Description
A world renowned stained-glass artist presents a complete self-teaching course in his fascinating and rewarding craft. He opens with a brief illustrated history of stained-glass art, showing great European cathedral windows from the Gothic and Renaissance eras, as well as secular masterpieces by more recent artists, including Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Marc Chagall. At the heart of this comprehensively illustrated book is solid instruction, starting with a detailed presentation of tools and materials and directions on their use. Following chapters deal with stained glass projects--how to create original designs and transform them into finished works. Full-color photos with explanatory captions fill virtually every page of this book, and present several stained-glass projects one step at a time, from their original planning stages to completion. A final chapter shows how to restore damaged works and bring them back to a condition near their original specifications. Hundreds of color photos fill this beautiful and instructive volume. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Stained glass has always been an art of inspiration and devotion, infusing space with a warm, magical glow. This book is a comprehensive and lavish review of the history, styles, designs, artists, tools, and techniques of this much-loved medium. It begins with the art's early development in ancient Egypt and Rome, then traces its evolution through the Byzantine era, the Romanesque and Gothic styles, and to its revival in the hands of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Frank Lloyd Wright. Stained Glass also features the innovative work of 20th-century architects and artists.

Stained glass scholar Virginia Chieffo Raguin brings years of study and research to this sweeping survey. With more than 500 color photographs featuring both classic devotional works such as Chartres, Le Mans, and the Abbey at St. Denis and modern creations by Tiffany, Marc Chagall, John La Farge, and the Bauhaus, Stained Glass is the definitive single-volume history of this majestic art. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Best overview in print
Raguin's overview of stained glass is the best available art historical overview of the medium, though it's not exactly exhaustive -- it covers the development of stained glass from early medieval time through the present day (though the examples of modern stained glass are comparatively weak), focusing on the evolving function of stained glass in its architectural context (as adornment, a didactic tool, an artistic medium). This is a reference book. You will not find patterns or techniques in it; and it does not examine any particular set of windows in depth; but it does frame the development of style and technology in an understandable narrative, and it has plenty of excellent photographs.Well worth the money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of great patterns
I've done stained-glass painting for years and have owned several of Ed Sibbet's books through the years. The patterns are always worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using this book is a breeze.
Although this book has few color examples in it the patterns are all top notch. I like it. I will adapt some of the patterns, as I do all book patterns, into something more from my brain. This is a good idea resource book. The piece counts my make it more of intermediate use rather than for beginners.

I bought this for someone who has enjoyed colouring mandalas. The designs are great but sometimes there is so much black around the design it is distracting and the lines are so close together in some of the patterns, the colour does not shine through. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Mosaic Book
Judging from the title and the cover image, I bought this book expecting traditional stained glass patterns. The book turned out to be a rather nice collection of mosaic patterns using stained glass as tesserae and cut shapes. The book covers various projects for use in home decorating such as wall art, serving trays, table tops and garden stones. The cover image is actually a headboard for a bed.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT STAINED GLASS!!
I bought this book because I'm taking a stained glass class and wanted more ideas for how to incorporate pieces in my home. While the projects are beautiful, they are not stained glass but are all mosaic tiles. I was extremely disappointed with this book and wish the publishers had insisted on an accurately descriptive title for this book, especially since the piece on the cover could easily be a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained glass window.

If the authors read this review, I have some questions as to web fusing when making these stained glass quilts.I started the first project tonight and, to me (and also to my husband) the directions for using the web fusing were very confusing. There are two pieces of paper on the fusing.I am assuming you remove the loosest, then put the actual sticky side of the web where you removed this first paper onto the pattern piece, and then trace onto the paper that is stuck to the other side of the web. After you get the pattern traced, do you then lay it on the leading material with the sticky web side on the back side of the leading material and press it down with the paper still stuck to the other side of the web?And then, leaving the paper on the other side of the web, take it and cut out the pieces in the pattern, then remove the paper with the design drawn on it, and fuse that side to the focus material? It seems like if you press the pattern onto the leading material with the paper on the web that the paper would stick to the web and then the web would not stick to the focus material. But, after cutting out my pattern on the leading material, it seems the paper is loose enough to be removed; however, will the web still stick to the focus material after all that?Anyway, your instructions are very confusing and unclear and in your next printing you might clear them up some. You do not say a word about removing the loose paper before doing anything or about laying the web side down on the pattern with the other paper still attached to it to trace it.I know you do say to trace on the paper attached to the web but you don't know what to do before that.Just a suggestion as both myself and my husband had trouble understanding it.Having never used the web fusing, it was confusing to say the least.I also think it is a lot easier to cut the pattern out with scissors than the knife as the knife tends to not cut through some of the places and you have to go back and then try to cut it again. But, all in all, I think it is a great book with lots of nice patterns. Not easy finding the focus fabrics though.I went to a very well known quilting store today and still could not find many of them.I did find one oriental one which I can use.But they are few and far between. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fuse-It
Owned Petra's other book on glass fusing and found FUSE-IT to be the perfect companion book to expand our understanding of glass fusing, slumping, and draping since we are new to "glassers".

Especially appreciated the table with firing conditions for 8 of the main processes so we now better understand where to begin in setting up our process steps depending upon the glass used and end results desired.

The information on KaiserLee Board got us to make more use of this item yielding "kool" results.

Even contacted Petra for some specific answers and she was prompt and very chearfully detailed in her answers.

I would recommend both of her books for anyone new to glass fusing, slumping, and or drapping.

If an author does not have a grasp of the English language, including spelling, sentence structure, word usage and grammar, the author should hire a professional proofreader. If said author cannot be bothered to hire a professional proofreader, I cannot be bothered to read the author's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Projects
I enjoyed this "how to" fusing book. There were some interesting projects and the photography was very nice. This book along with her second book (or is this her first...) Introduction to Fused Glass, offers newcomers to this additive art/craft(?) some insight into using fiberboard to make molds. This really opens the door to a great deal of creativity. I also think there that this might be a good purchase for someone with a bit more experience as well. Like I said, some great projects.
