5-0 out of 5 stars The Books That Changed History {4 1/2 stars}
This massive multi-volume study of US government policy on Vietnam has permanent value not just for scholars and students of the Vietnam War, but for anyone concerned with the making of American foreign policy. The "Papers" are fundamentally important not only in terms of content, of course, but even more so in contrast to the public statements of our leaders explaining the purpose and progress of the war. While this makes the (self-)deception and lies clear enough, it is the internal dialogue of bureaucratic thinking that is most fascinating.

The format of "The Pentagon Papers" is a bit confusing, with primary documents mixed into the main narrative, but not always in a distinguishable manner. The sheer bulk of the material will naturally deter many readers, but it does repay the effort and is superior to various abridgements. While the expurgated editions are useful, the nature of the selection process gives them an episodic quality, and tends to highlight dramatic incidents rather than the all-important mundane character of bureaucracy, even on life and death matters of global import.

Daniel Ellsberg, who released the papers to the press, may well have some unheroic qualities about him. But his greatness lay in transcending the constraints of background and institutional context, and recognizing a higher duty to his country and humanity. Not only the substance of "The Pentagon Papers" ensures their significance, but also Ellsberg's example of public service. This is vitally important in a time when yet another presidential administration deceives us all in pursuit of fatally flawed military adventures. Who will be the Daniel Ellsberg of the so-called "war on terror?"

Some of the issues raised by "The Pentagon Papers" and Ellsberg's career are addressed in N. Chomsky, "American Power and the New Mandarins" (especially the essays on intellectuals' responsibility); D. Ellsberg, "Secrets;" and from a rather different stance, J. Kwitny, "Endless Enemies."The fifth volume of the "Papers" contains invaluable critical essays by notable scholars such as Chomsky and Howard Zinn. For "balance," also look at Robert McNamara's mature reflections on Vietnam,"In Retrospect." But he still seems to be partly in denial. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a comic hilarious book
This is a warm-hearted hilarious book about the wife of the spokesman for the Secretary of State during the 80's.This diary of Virginia Hunter tells of pitfalls and pratfalls she gets herself into and usually quite by chance. Most of the situations are not her fault, but make the Washington headlines the following day.

The reader sees Washington society and politics from the eyes of a woman with a master's degree in acting and directing and a professional author and critic.Unfortunately, and to the delight of the reader, she is a master at taking missteps at every turn which end up reverberating through Washington gossip channels. This high profile woman is an entertainment all by herself. But reading the book also brings insights into the hard core political world of a Secretary of State who was a victim of an assassination attempt. It was foiled of course by our loveable heroine Ginny Hunter.

The reader is also treated to a portion of a play that Ginny wrote that of course, was not without a few missteps as well. You must read it to find out what happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Fun with WHITE HOUSE SECRETS
Ginny Hunter's Antrics!!!!!
The Antics that have been captured in WHITE HOUSE SECRETS have been quoted by Mr. Bud Grant, the former President of CBS Entertainment and CBS Theatrical Division, "Washington as seen through the brilliant eyes of Libby Hughes:
"it's funny,it's serious, it has it all." Those words capture the entire book. When writing "it's funny," Mr Grant was right on as I almost had a serious accident when I fell out of my chair with laughter when reading pages 88-90, when Ginny Hunter, while leaning over viewing the dead body of a political official, a soldier goose, stepping around the casket, caught Ginny's legs and flipped her into the casket with the lid slamming shut with her and dead body inside. The entire book is filled with Ginny's klutzy antics. A must for readers of any age.

Product Description
Despite over two hundred years of experience with constitutional government, much remains unclear about the power of the political branches to curtail or re-define the judicial power of the United States.Uncertainty persists about the basis on which state courts and federal agencies may hear federal claims and the degree to which federal courts must review their decisions.Scholars approach these questions from a range of vantage points and have arrived at widely varying conclusions about the relationship between congressional and judicial power.

Deploying familiar forms of legal analysis, and relying upon a new account of the Court's supremacy in relation to lower courts and tribunals, James Pfander advances a departmental conception of the judiciary. He argues that Congress can enlist the state courts, lower federal courts, and administrative agencies to hear federal claims in the first instance, but all of these tribunals must operate within a hierarchical framework over which the "one supreme Court" identified in the Constitution exercises ultimate supervisory authority. In offering the first general account of the Court as department head, Pfander takes up such important debates in the federal courts' literature as Congress's power to strip the federal courts of jurisdiction to review state court decisions, its authority to assign decision-making authority to state courts and non-Article III tribunals, its control over the doctrine of vertical stare decisis, and its ability to craft rules of practice for the federal system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Sometimes Hurts
...this book does...provide a disturbing look inside the State Department and other areas of the US government vis a vis Romania.
Romania was given a political "free ride" for many years by the US. This was because of cheap and shallow political gestures against the Soviet Union made by Romania, such as sending athletes to the Olympics during the Soviet boycott. Meanwhile, the regime did Moscow's bidding where it really counted and also repressed the Romanian people to devistating extremes.
This book provides useful insight into many of the outrageous actions by the Romanian government and US refusal to do anything meaningful about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure drivel!
David Funderburk--the former history professor at the hardline Baptist Campbell University, one-term US Representative from rural North Carolina, protege of Sen. Jesse Helms and former Ambassador to Romania in the early'80s--is in the mold of those Red-baiters of the early '50s.He denoucesthe State Department as communist sympathizers and throughout the bookbelies his extreme right-wing Christian fundamentalist ideology. He iscertainly correct that the Ceausescu regime was horrid, but that was notdue to the State Department. His solution, end detente with allcommunists, has been tried time and again with failure.Funderburkobviously harbors a deep insecurity about his less than stellar academiccareer and that he was ostracized by everyone in the foreign policy makingapparatus from George Schultz on down.If any book deserves less than astar, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars recounting of an ambassador's life in Communist Romania
