Product Description
Folk Strings is a collection of folk melodies from around the world arranged for strings. Unlike classical music, which normally has an ""authentic"" version, folk music often exists in many versions, with differences in the melody or lyrics. Sometimes several countries lay claim to a melody because a group of people moved to a new country and took their music with them. Most folk songs were sung and played for many years before they were written down, and their original composer is usually unknown. This collection includes melodies in a variety of moods and with rhythmic patterns which are representative of their country of origin. The arrangements in Folk Strings can be effective with players at a variety of levels. In order to provide maximum flexibility, the collection is available in a number of instrumentations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All for Strings book 1 cello
When learning an instrument, everyone teaches things in their own order. This is no different. It does progress reasonably, at a good rate, and doesn't forget to teach you anything you need to know before moving to the next thing. As with most beginning books when learning an instrument, the lesson songs aren't exactly inspired aesthetically, but they are quite functional. It does a good job of hitting all the bases, and this is very important in a beginning book.It is very effective at introducing a new player to the cello and the basics of how to play. However, I do want to say that while the book is invaluable, so is a good teacher. If you want to learn the cello, in order to do it well, you will need both. The book can only do so much.It can not see when your technique is incorrect and correct you.I haven't tried any other beginning books so I'm not sure about how it compares to them, but I liked it and I found it easy to learn using this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but very good
Bought this for my six year old as he began cello.Starts out explaining each string in the first position and gives numerous, simple examples to get the hang of bowing and fingering.Overall, good for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers many aspects of basics in music
This book is good for beginners from age 6 and above. It covers almost all basics in music notation, and progress at an easy pace throughout the book.Selection of music is nice, though sometimes I came across a few other adaptations and variaty in other books.I am a violin teacher, and I highly recommend this book as teaching material for new beginners to music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An older pedagogical guide remembered
Samuel Applebaum's guide book for teachers and students of upper string instruments, "The Art and Science of String Performance," seems to be a largely forgotten book. I highly recommend this book as a return to basics and excellent explanations from the pen of a master string educator. Applebaum worked before the age of glamour and glitch, and this book represents the clearest and most straightforward descriptions of building both basic and refined technique. I would like to encourage the rediscovery of this valuable volume drawing upon years of seasoned experience with many talented and responsive pupils of a master pedagogue. ... Read more

Product Description
In this collection of in-depth interviews, today's leading performers get to the heart of one of the most beloved forms of classical music: the string quartet. Representing both young groups and longstanding favorites, they all have insights into the joys and hardships of expressing themselves as part of a tight-knit ensemble. How they practice, how they come to consensus, their performance secrets and anxieties, what moves and inspires them - all this and more comes to life in this series of revealing interviews with player and charter Strings magazine contributor Edith Eisler.Amazon.com Review
In reading Edith Eisler's ongoing contributions to Strings magazine, for which she serves as New York correspondent, one is instantly struck by the candid rapport the writer is able to establish with musicians. This book--part of an ongoing series on string players--gathers together a delightfully varied assortment of Eisler's articles and interviews spotlighting some of the greatest chamber music players alive today. Whether talking to the Emerson, Orion, Borodin, or Guarneri string quartets (to name just a few), the violin-trained Eisler is at heart a fellow musician discussing the craft. Don't expect the formality you'll find in many classical music interviews here: these are friendly "conversations." But conversation becomes an art, and one is reminded of the conversation rapport toward which all great chamber ensembles aspire. From the Manhattan String Quartet, we learn that the group has an affinity for performing "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" as an encore; from the Mendelssohn, we get a fascinating story about the derivation of their name (fulfilling a residency at the Hebrew Arts School, they chose "Mendelssohn" because it referred to both the composer and his grandfather, philosopher Moses Mendelssohn). It's equally interesting to note the Russian groups' differing takes on the effects that Soviet and post-Soviet governments have exercised on their music, for better or worse. String players will delight in the details--there's a listing of each instrument the quartets use to perform, right down to the make and type of strings--and the rest of us will be happy to know that our favorite performers are just like everyone else, with disagreements, quirks, and all. --Jason Verlinde ... Product Description
The study of string instruments should include ensemble playing at the earliest possible stage. There is much to be gained from the playing of duets. Each player learns how to listen to the other, and in a short time develops an awareness of balance, musical phrasing, intonation, and tone quality. This type of training is excellent preparation for participation in large groups. These four volumes of duets for two violins will help fill the need for early ensemble experience in the public schools. They should be used in string classes as a supplement to any of the standard string methods. They will also encourage music making outside of the school, with parents or with other students. These duets are ideal for recitals in the public schools and in public school festivals. They may be played by two performers, or by multiple performers on each part, with or without piano accompaniment. ... Read more

Product Description
In Pulling Strings, Kaiser explores the extraordinary career of Melville A. Clark (1883-1953), a musician, inventor, entrepreneur, community leader, and collector whose colorful story is largely unknown.

Beginning with an account of Clark s musical family, Kaiser chronicles the founding in 1859 of the Clark Music Company, of which Melville Clark became president in 1919. Originally just a tinkers shed, the business ultimately moved into a six-story building in the center of Syracuse. The music company celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2010. Clark also combined his talents as a gifted musician and astute entrepreneur to start the first Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.

Kaiser recounts the development of the Clark Irish harp, the first portable harp manufactured in the United States, that could easily play accidentals. There were other Clark inventions, such as the first nylon strings for instruments. In addition, Clark designed balloons that the British used in 1918 to drop more than 1,250,000 pamphlets over Germany. Clark s story unfolds in fascinating detail: a musical encounter with President Wilson, entertaining President F. D. Roosevelt, a visit to Buckingham Palace to present Princess Elizabeth with a music box, and the journey of a Clark Irish harp to Antarctica with Admiral Byrd.

Lavishly illustrated, Pulling Strings not only uncovers the life of a musical genius but also sheds light on a forgotten chapter in Syracuse history. ... Read more

Product Description
A monumental accomplishment from the age of Enlightenment, the string quartets of Joseph Haydn hold a central place not only in the composer's oeuvre, but also in our modern conception of form, style, and expression in the instrumental music of his day. Here, renowned music historians Floyd and Margaret Grave present a fresh perspective on a comprehensive survey of the works. This thorough and unique analysis offers new insights into the creation of the quartets, the wealth of musical customs and conventions on which they draw, the scope of their innovations, and their significance as reflections of Haydn's artistic personality. Each set of quartets is characterized in terms of its particular mix of structural conventions and novelties, stylistic allusions, and its special points of connection with other opus groups in the series. Throughout the book, the authors draw attention to the boundless supply of compositional strategies by which Haydn appears to be continually rethinking, reevaluating, and refining the quartet's potentials. They also lucidly describe Haydn's famous penchant for wit, humor, and compositional artifice, illuminating the unexpected connections he draws between seemingly unrelated ideas, his irony, and his lightning bolts of surprise and thwarted expectation. Approaching the quartets from a variety of vantage points, the authors correct many prevailing assumptions about convention, innovation, and developing compositional technique in the music of Haydn and his contemporaries.

Going beyond traditional modes of study, The String Quartets of Joseph Haydn blends historical analysis and factual information with critical appraisal in a way that will engage all Haydn enthusiasts. ... Read more
