5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource
I was really pleased when a colleague suggested this book to me.In the past I'dbeen fortunate enough to work with only one or two cultural groups at a time, but this year I have students from all over the world.I had questions, but not enough time to do the necessary research to find out even basic information for such a wide variety of nationalities. This book did the work for me.The info. is concise and easily accessible, even offering brief paragraphs on how education differs in the native lands of my students. It helped arm me for what my students might be expecting, as well as what I might expect.I'm hoping a future edition will include a section on the Hmong.Otherwise, perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary!
This book is simply necessary for anyone who is in contact with internationals. I read this book and the information I have found has helped me understand so many things about international students and in general people from other countries and backgrounds. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Resource
"Advanced Communication Games" is a structure focused practice book, though the activities could be used just for the communicative value of them. Most of the games are really fun, and students enjoy them a lot. They are often broad enough to allow the creative side of the students to come out.

Some of the acitivities have a lot of cutting out, but one way around it is copy onto card and just keep the copies when possible. For example, some of the games need lots of pictures cut out. These can be copied onto coloured paper or card and kept after the lesson. This way, you can re-use them again, with no such problems.

One flaw with the book is the cover of it. It is very flimsy, and will soon be creased and possibly torn. It has happened to a couple of copies of the book that I have used, due to the heavy use of the book by the teachers. You may want to strength the front and rear covers with some heavy duty self-adhesive covering plastic.

Other than that, it is a great book with lots of different activities to use. It is a regular feature in my own teaching, and I have a drawer or two full of pre-copied activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favourites!!!
When teaching English as a Second Language, you will find an incredible amount of material out there for your lessons. Most of it will be good, but if you asked me, I would have to say this is one of the greatest!! Intelligent, enjoyable activities for both the students and the teacher!! It is a pity it is not possible to browse the book online, though.

Product Description

Are there evidence-based answers to the broad question "What explicit knowledge about language in teachers and/or students appears to enhance literacy development in some way"? Distinguished by its global perspective, its currency, and its comprehensiveness, Beyond the Grammar Wars:

  • provides an historical overview of the debates around grammar and English/literacy teaching in four settings: the US, England, Scotland and Australia
  • offers an up-to-date account of what the research is telling (and not telling) us about the effectiveness of certain kinds of grammar-based pedagogies in English/literacy classrooms
  • takes readers into English/literacy classrooms through a range of examples of language/grammar-based pedagogies which have proven to be successful
  • addresses metalinguistic issues related to changes in textual practices in a digital and multimodal age, and explores the challenges for educators who are committed to finding a "usable grammar" to contribute to teaching and learning in relation to these practices.

All of the contributors are acknowledged experts in their field. Activities designed for use in language and literacy education courses actively engage students in reflecting on and applying the content in their own teaching contexts.

Product Description
This volume synthesizes and critically analyzes the literature on response to the writing of second language students, and discusses the implications of the research for teaching practice in the areas of written and oral teacher commentary on student writing, error correction, and facilitation of peer response.

The book features numerous examples of student texts and teacher commentary, as well as figures and appendices that summarize research findings and present sample lessons and other teaching materials. It is thus simultaneously comprehensive in its approach to the existing research and highly practical in showing current and future teachers how this material applies to their everyday endeavors of responding to student writing and teaching composition classes.

Response to student writing--whether it takes the form of teachers' written feedback on content, error correction, teacher-student conferences, or peer response--is an extremely important component of teaching second language writing. Probably no single activity takes more teacher time and energy. Response to Student Writing is a valuable theoretical and practical resource for those involved in this crucial work, including L2 composition researchers, in-service and preservice teachers of ESOL/EFL writers, and teacher educators preparing graduate students for the teaching of writing.
