4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start if you wonder if you can teach poetry
I have little experience with poetry - it intimidates me. This book was suberb at easing my fears and showing a new kind of poetry. It has given me confidence to teach poetry to my children (I home school and felt poetrywas a weak part of our program). I was at first a little disappointed thatthere were so many poems; I wanted more hard instruction. I came to seethat the poems were an essential part of learning, they are instruction. They made me laugh and cry and begin to write my own poems.I did noticeone student poem that is actually copywrited by an adult author in anotherbook. I think this student pulled a fast one on the author by passing thiswork as his own. However, the overall quality of the book is good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hemingway has nothing on Meyers.
Dr. Meyers does a fantastic job of presenting information that teachers can take into the classroom.Students are faced with situations and dilemmas that they must work through with critical thinking skills.Thisis a useful book written by a man who believes in bringing the"real" world into the classroom. After reading the bookthoroughly, I would honestly fill an entire Strawbridge's bag with copiesfor distribution among my peers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone raising or teaching children.
Dr. Meyers presents an interesting, hands-on way of tacking childhood dilemmas that is easily adaptable for all ages. Surely anyone dealing with children on a regular basis will find numerous examples to suit his/herenvironment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students, but even better for teachers & parents
I had to get this book for a class, and I thought what you just did, "great a required book."But surprisingly, this was a great book.It presents a format which is not only needed by students, butshould be required reading for teachers and parents as well. I havereturned back to school to get my teaching certification, so I practicesome materials out on my kids. They love the talking about the dilemmas, but I really like how they started thinking that way about real lifesituations as well.Get this book! ... Read more

At once a major resource for historians of science and an excellent introduction to natural history for the general reader, David Allen'sThe Naturalist in Britain established a precedent for investigating natural history as a social phenomenon. Here the author traces the evolution of natural history from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries, from the "herbalizings" of apprentice apothecaries to the establishment of national reserves and international societies to the emergence of natural history as an organized discipline. Along the way he describes the role of scientific ideas, popular fashion, religious motivations, literary influences, the increase of leisure time and disposable income, and the tendency of like- minded persons to form clubs. His comprehensive and entertaining discussion creates a vibrant portrait of a scientific movement inextricably woven into a particular culture. At once a major resource for historians of science and an excellent introduction to natural history for the general reader, David Allen'sThe Naturalist in Britain established a precedent for investigating natural history as a social phenomenon. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teaching
I discovered this book while searching for a resource to aid me in teaching a poetry-writing class for older teens & adult writers.I hesitated in buying this book, as I thought it would be useful only for classroom use (& only for grade school ages), but I bought it anyway just to give it the benefit of the doubt.
Boy, am I glad I did! This book is very helpful! The principles are not simplistic, but they are basic and clear.... easy to follow.THis book works well for both individuals looking to see what poetic elements are and for educators / facilitators looking for clean, concise ways to deliver complicated material ("What IS a poem, anyway?!?!").Ms. Tucker answers all the questions one may have about what makes a poem good, successful, readable, and offers "activities" along the way to illustrate the gist of each concept. The activities are wonderful: concrete and well-explained, and, in short, perfect tools for classroom use.The language in the book can be understood by all; younger poets will fully understand, and adults will appreciate the no-nonsense and straighforward rhetoric.
I am really glad I bought this helpful guide! It has impacted how I write and teach poetry.

From the author: This study modified a successful nutrition program to improve its transferability and potential for institutionalization. Specific aims were to determine: 1) if 16 nutrition lessons taught alternately by special resource teachers (SRT) and classroom teachers, could produce outcomes equivalent to 24 SRT lessons; and 2) teachers' reactions to the program. The quasi-experimental design used classrooms (19 treatment and 19 comparison) in matched schools. Surveys and plate waste measured children's outcomes, and classroom teachers were observed and interviewed. Treatment students showed greater knowledge and self-efficacy scores and consumed 0.36 more servings of fruits and vegetables at lunch. Behavioral differences between groups were greater when SRTs provided all instruction. Teachers supported the program and anticipated teaching more nutrition on their own, but noted serious structural barriers. Findings support the need for long-term contact to induce behavior change and the advantage of using teachers specifically trained in nutrition and experiential education. 5-0 out of 5 stars Students Resolving Conflict: Peer Mediation in Schools
I've been in the mediation field and training since 1991 and this is by far the best, most comprehensive and well organized book available. The nitty gritty of mediation has been well thought out and presented in a way that is straightforward and practical. The school environment can be a tricky one in which to implement mediation, but the scope of forms, advice and practical experience makes this guide a "can't do without" item.I highly recommend it to anyone serious about starting, improving or trouble-shooting a peer mediation effort in any setting. If all schools used this guide, peer mediation would be a feature of our school culture, not an oddity of progressive and safer schools. ... Using a comics approach, the book includes such topics as Shelley's language, how to describe Victor Frankenstein, and more, while engaging students with quizzes, word searches, coloring pages, and a "draw your own monster" feature.
