Product Description
This book is a product of 35 years of teaching experience by the author in all grade level which include the elementary level, high school and college level. The author would like to share her ups and downs as a teacher hoping that it will guide all teachers in dealing with situations that may come their way as they are not aware whether the day will pass with agony or triumph. What inspired the author to write this book is the persistent question made by her husband asking her: "tell Daddy what happened to my Baby in school today? And so, the author said that a 12 year old boy who was in a special education class said to her: "Mrs. P., since it is only the 2 of us in this room, WHY DONT WE HAVE SEX? here is another one. When the author started taking notes of the behavior of a misbahaved student in her class...the student said to her: "IF YOU BUST ME, I WILL BUST YOU FIRST". More revelations will be found in the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
The book is entertaining with tales of substitute teaching, but not terribly helpful. If you are looking for a book written by someone who has been there, this is it. If you are looking for one with information or guidance, it is not the one.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless
Don't waste your time or money. I read half of the book and gave up once I realized it was basically a journal of the author's substitute teaching experiences. I wanted to find a book that contained practical advice for substitute teachers- what to expect, advice on classroom management, lesson plans that can be adapted and quickly implemented, etc. I didn't find any useful information in this book.

The book was difficult to follow because the author's incoherent writing style. There were many typos and grammatical errors throughout the book; I had a hard time believing the author was a credible source for teaching advice.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Purchase
While "Mrs. P" seems like a very kind and knowledgable person, I found this book too difficult to read because of her poor writing style.I found her personal experiences insightful and honest, but her poor command of the English language damaged her credibility.I was also misled by the table of contents, thinking that Part 4 pertained to the substitute's own job search.Instead, it offers tips for helping high school students in their vocational classes. This book would be much better if it had been edited and reorganized by a decent publisher.

The author is very kind to share her personal experience, but she didn't give me enough useful information to motivate me keep the book. This is the first book I've returned to Amazon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Teachers
I bought this book and the one for grades 3-5 and I really like both of them. They have been really useful for the substitute jobs I've gotten so far this year. There are great resources in here for both the classroom teacher who is trying to complete their sub folder as well as for the substitute teacher.I really like the substitute teacher feedback form - it's easy to complete but really gives the classroom teacher a good idea of what happened and how the day went. There are also great tips for starting the day, classroom management, and even worksheets to print if you need some fun yet educational time fillers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lofty words don't feed the hungry.
I'm sorry to report this book is indeed too simplistic for the substitute teacher who needs meat in order to survive the jungle. It is sweet and uplifting, but the only thing I gained from reading this book is one joke to share with kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
Please don't buy this book! It won't help you become a better substitute teacher. There are too many pages devoted to knock-knock jokes and silly riddles. The author also has way too much to say about using videos!...Most school districts won't let you use videos that have not been approved or reviewed by the district and/or principal, yet she has you bringing in your own tapes.
I was VERY disappointed with the lack of help I received from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of money...
I can't believe that she managed to get someone to publish this "book" (I use the term loosely). There is almost no useful content at all. This is, very clearly, a case where if you were in abrick-and-mortar bookstore, and you picked up this book to have a lookie,in half a nanosecond you would immediately return it to the shelf... (sorry Amazon!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
This book was a huge disappointment. It was extremely quick reading and offered no substance!I will be returning this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Who wrote the favorable reviews, the author's parents?
This book is a complete waste of time and money. The outdated ideas are completely out of place in a contemporary classroom. I am sorry that I didn't read the customer reviews before I ordered this title. Thesuggestions in this book are so bad that I plan to use them in my next newteacher staff development training as examples of what not to do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for first year teachers!
I am a new junior high school teacher and this book really helped me out a lot my first year.Lots of good advice on how to manage a classroom and lots of great activities for when I make a mistake in my lesson planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2001 Editionis Vastly Superior to the 2000 Edition
The reviews shown for the 2000 edition have little relevance to the 2001 edition. The newer edition is a layflat book, not spiral bound. The 2001 edition is the Third Edition and is greatly improved over the two previous editions as a result of feedback from users all over the country. It now has to be considered the premier aid for substitute teachers. It also is helpful to all teachers for creative ideas that the latestedition includes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
i have been working as a substitute teacher for four years. I have looked all over for a book that would help me as a high school substitute teacher. This book does the job.It offers lots of activities I can use if the plan the teacher left does not work - or if the VCR is broken! It also gave me great advice for how to work with the students. There are helpful forms to use - like seating plans and emergency plans. It is very comprehensve and is great for substitutes at any grade level.

2-0 out of 5 stars Substitute Teacher's Reference Manual
This book does help you think about some things you wouldn't normally think about, and there are some helpful worksheets in the back for emergency use and background school information. However, the book is notworth paying money for.I would see if you could check it out at yourlocal library, if not no great loss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I started Substitute teaching and was looking for a guide to help me out. This manual had only common sense knowledge, and only a few craft ideas, many of which were similar to asking a child to draw a picture. There were no creative ideas to help new teachers. There were mechanical errors allover, and worst of all, the author referred to children as"munchkins" and "gremlins"!They are children, notcreatures. Do not waste your money on this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This book addresses aspects of substitute teaching that are essential to making your teaching experience a worthwhile one.For some reason, however, many colleges, universities and professors don't teach from this perspective.Sometimes it takes a person looking from the outside in, someone whose mind has not already been filled with opinions and dogmas to offer a fresh perspective on issues that need to be addressed. This book provides a fresh perspective on the potential solutions to problems that substitute teachers face everyday.Renee was probably the least educated, least experienced substitute teacher in the school district. In fact, she had no formal education or experience in the field of education.Yet, she was a highly coveted substitute teacher in the school district she taught for.She handled and taught the students so well that well-educated and experienced teachers asked for her advice on how they could manage their classes. If you ask some of the best substitute teachers (and teachers for that matter) how they are able to effectively manage their classroom and enjoy their teaching experience, many will tell you that they have used the concepts that have been outlined in this book. The author defines what it means to be a substitute teacher and outlines a holistic approach to substitute teaching that requires the teacher to consider his/her responsibility to their students which goes beyond teaching textbook material. In order to teach textbook material, students must understand the significance of being at school first. If this foundation is not laid, then in many situations, teaching textbook material is futile, if not impossible. In order for the student to understand his/her purpose at school, they should understand that they have a purpose in life and these formative years are their opportunity to discover that purpose.Providing this understanding of purpose will empower even the worst of students to go on to be productive members of society. The students can only go as far as teachers themselves have gone.As a result, if the teacher has not discovered his/her purpose for being alive, it is impossible for him/her to empower his/her students to discover theirs. The author therefore challenges teachers everywhere to first discover their purpose and who they were created to be, so that they can challenge their students to do the same. The author also equips substitute teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage the best and worst classrooms. She reminds the teacher that teaching textbook material is very important and should be put in proper perspective so that they can lead their students to become successful, not just in school, but in life. The role of the substitute teacher should never be trivialized and when you know your role and operate in that role, you can have a tremendous impact on those you teach, even if you are in contact with them for only less than one day. ... The themes can be adapted for a shorter time or expanded to cover a longer time. The third section provides five themes, each with a specific bias towards English, maths, science, history, geography. These themes can be used to cover a longer period of supply teaching-such as five days.As well as providing practical ideas for teaching the books also outlines the requirements of supply teaching, offers advice if you are getting back into teaching after a career break and tells you some of the things that a supply teacher needs to know. *Lots of new and lively practical ideas *Guidance for differentiation *Detailed skills index *Time-saving photocopiables *Key-stage specific books ...
