Product Description

This book explores the relationship between the process of state formation and political identities in the context of Sudan's conflict. It examines conflict and politics of identity in the Sudan. It argues that neither race, nor culture is at the center of the Sudan's tragedy. Instead, it is the racialized postcolonial state that imposed a single vision of nation through the policy of Arabization and Islamization. Idris examines how an ideology of hierarchy was historically constructed and politically institutionalized in the Sudan, acknowledging the centrality of the historical legacy of slavery and colonialism in the crisis of postcolonial citizenship in the Sudan.

Product Description

The rise of Sam Childers from violent, drug-addicted biker to a man willing to risk everything to rescue the orphans and child soldiers of Sudan

"All my life, from birth, it's been a fight. And it always seemed to be another man's war. I always seemed to be fighting for someone else. But it always came back to me. The Word says we're born into sin, and sin always comes back to war." -Sam Childers

Sam Childers has always been a fighter. Born to a violent father and a mother of great faith, his life was a contradiction. With an affinity for drugs and women, the angry young man grew into a drug-dealing biker. But that was then. Nowadays Sam-along with the cadre of Sudanese soldiers he employs-spends his time in the most dangerous parts of Sudan and Uganda rescuing the youngest victims of war, orphans and child-soldiers. His mission is simple: save the children, no matter the cost.

Endorsements:

"Another Man's War is about true terrorism . . . against more than 200,000 children in northern Uganda and Southern Sudan. Sam Childers-a fighter and a preacher (some call him a mercenary)-tirelessly leads a small militia into the jungle, daring to fight against a vicious army outnumbering him one thousand to one. One man can make a huge difference. Sam Childers certainly does." -- Peter Fonda, actor/filmmaker, best known as star of Easy Rider

"The Reverend Sam Childers has been a very close friend to the government of South Sudan for many years and is a trusted friend."  -- President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan

"The Reverend Sam Childers is a long time devoted friend to our government and his courageous work is supported by us." -- President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda

"Sam Childers is one of those rare men [who is] willing to do literally whatever it takes to promote the message of Jesus Christ and save children from the tyranny of evil men." -- John Rich, lead singer and songwriter, Big & Rich

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and challenging read
Sam Childers lives in a world few Americans would dare venture into let alone try to rescue it's children from the insane lunatic evil known as the LRA. This book does not speak of ventures into mamby pamby land but a real world where evil is rampant, deadly, brutal, inhumane and nearly unchecked. Don't read this book if you would rather not know what terror lies beyond the horizon and the men who work to turn back the tide. If on the other hand you care about the suffering of a world gone mad and want to know the good news of what can be done about it, order the book, or several to pass around like I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Man's War
An amazing story, but poorly written. It was difficult at times to stay interested due to the disjointed writing style.I think Mr. Childers would have better served his cause by employing a professional co-author. I would have liked more information on his childhood and background which led him to his noble cause.Although I wasaware of the situation in Sudan, this book merely emphasized the largely ignored horrendous atrocities still occurring there.I applaud his unorthodox tactics, and will certainly make a point of researching this horrible situation further.I understand this book is being made into a movie, and will be extremely curious to see how it is handled in that medium.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It And Be Changed
This is a compelling and uncomfortable read! Sam Childer's testimony is incredible and I was inspired by him. He is a man that is not just reading the Word, but living the Word. He loves to the end of himself like Jesus. It's impossible to read this and not be changed and challenged. Why can't I help my neighbor, when he travels across the globe to protect innocent victims of violence, putting himself in harms way every day? You can't Not care after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angels with dirty faces
There are countless reviews on this book as it is, but for what it's worth...The Word says,"he who is forgiven much, loves much." I have been involved in biker ministry, prison and jail ministry and I have found that those who have come out a background that included not ready for prime time behaviour were the ones who sold out and applied that same energy and intensity to their Christian life. Sometimes it was a struggle to harness and aim the intensity in the proper direction, but when it happened, they became bulldozers for the Lord. Sam Childers is an example of this. To me, it is a relief to see someone who doesn't need to "feel led" to put it all on the line to do His work. I'm sure he is criticized by many in the church who will sit on their hands, year after year, growing roots into their pews and have to "pray about it." Then when the prayer gets answered using someone who says,"here I am send me," they will systematically dissect them for using unorthodoxed methods to save and change lives.
Personally, I wasn't concerned how this book was written. If I wanted literature I would have read Bernard Shaw or Oscar Wilde. I wanted to know how Childers got from point A to point B and I found out. I saw many parallels in the lives that have surrounded my own. I hope celebrity doesn't change him as it so often does to those in position in the Christian world. There are enough rock star preachers. If you like getting dirt under your fingernails and you're a blue collar Christian, read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Simple
As I read this book it was obvious to me that it was written by a man with little formal education. The simple, frank storytelling does not sound polished. The book certainly won't win any Pulitzers. However, the story itself has so much value that it almost doesn't matter that it is not well written.

Sam Childers is not the kind of person I normally like. He wasted his youth on drugs, sex and fighting. He dropped out of high school. He introduced hundreds of people to dangerous drugs. As a young man he constantly got into fights and still to this day believes that violence is the answer to many problems. Too much of this book focuses on his bad choices. I did not read this book so I could hear the intimate details of how Sam Childers slept with married women or sold illegal drugs. I understand he would like his readers to know where he is coming from, but the details are a bit gratuitous and unnecessesary.

However, the parts of this book that focus on his work in Sudan and the plight of the children living there are invaluable. Since the reckless days of Sam Childer's youth, he has turned his life around and founded a large orphanage compound in a war zone in Southern Sudan. He has rescued thousands of children from a fate worse than death. When in Sudan he is under constant threat of ambush, is freqently shot at, always carries an automatic weapon. To survive day after day in a situation like that and do what Childers does, you almost have to have a propensity for violence.

As a believer in diplomacy I find some of his opinions hard to stomach, but reading this book I could not help but recognize the need for people like Sam Childers in a world where AK-47 wielding psychopaths commit crimes that make the imaginations of serial killers seem tame. If nothing else this book deserves three stars for making me see things in a different way. A book that presents such a compelling argument deserves to be read whether you ultimately agree with Childers' methods or not. ... Read more

Product Description
New Sudan is a concept for radically reforming Sudan s governance system by addressing the national identity crisis that has been responsible for the wars, the instability and the failure of the national building project that have afflicted the country since independence. The gist of the crisis is that the dominant Arab group, which is in fact an African Arab hybrid and a minority, perceives the country in its image as an Arab-Islamic nation. This inevitably discriminates against the non-Arab and non-Moslem populations in the South and even against the other groups in the peripheral regions of the North, who even though are predominantly Moslem, are however not Arabs. The South, one third of the country in territory and population, was the first to rebel against this discriminatory framework in August 1955, only a few months before independence on the January 1, 1956. That rebellion which escalated into a 17 year war was separatist, but was resolved in 1972 by a compromise that granted the South regional autonomy. The abrogation of that accord in 1983 led to the resumption of the second rebellion by the Sudan People s Liberation Movement and Army (SPLM/A) that called for the unity of the country in the framework of a New Sudan in which there would be full equality of citizenship, without any discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, culture or gender. Over time, this vision began to appeal to the non-Arab northern groups and other liberal minded northerners. The Nuba and the Ingassana (Funj) were the first to join the SPLM/A in the struggle in the mid 1980s. The Beja in the East joined later. And the Darfurians, after having their first attempt at rebellion crushed in 1992, again staged a rebellion in 2003, triggering the atrocious war that is still raging and which some international observers have determined to be genocide. The vision of the New Sudan was largely that of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, a man who was a scholar, a soldier, and a statesman. When he arrived in Khartoum to be sworn in as First Vice President of the Government of National Unity and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of January 9, 2005, he was met by a rallying crowd estimated in the millions, clear evidence that the New Sudan was in sight. Tragically, two weeks later, Garang died in a helicopter crash. To some, the vision of the New Sudan died with him. To others, his legacy, including the New Sudan Vision, has been ironically rejuvenated, particularly in the North. But will it be realized or will it remain a dream and an elusive goal? That is the very essence of the question mark in the title of this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique electronic book on CD-ROM contains information and material on the crisis in Sudan, particularly in the western Darfur region.Sudan, geographically the largest country in Africa, has been ravaged by civil war intermittently for four decades. An estimated 2 million people have died over the past two decades due to war-related causes and famine, and millions have been displaced from their homes. The relief operation in southern Sudan is being coordinated by Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS), established in 1989 in response to the 1988 humanitarian crisis in which over 200,000 people died of starvation. The OLS, a consortium of U.N. agencies and three dozen non-governmental organizations (NGOs), operates in both government and rebel-controlled territories. The 21-year civil war has been and continues to be a major contributing factor to recurring humanitarian crisis. There have been many failed attempts to end the civil war in southern Sudan, including efforts by Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, former President Jimmy Carter, and the United States. To that end, the heads of state from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Uganda formed a mediation committee under the aegis of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and held the first formal negotiations in March 1994. In July 2002, the Sudan government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) signed a peace framework agreement in Kenya. In early September, the government of Sudan walked out of the Machakos talks and returned under pressure in early October 2002.On May 26, 2004, the government of Sudan and SPLA signed three protocols on Power Sharing, the Nuba Mountains and Southern Blue Nile, and on the long disputed Abyeiarea. The signing of these protocols resolved all outstanding issues between the parties. On June 5, 2004, the parties signed “the Nairobi Declaration on the Final Phase of Peace in the Sudan.” On January 9, 2005, the government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement signed the final peace agreement at a ceremony held in Nairobi, Kenya. The signing of the Sudan Comprehensive Peace! Agreement effectively ended the 21-year old civil war and triggered a six-year Interim Period. Meanwhile, the ongoing crisis in Darfur in western Sudan has led to a major humanitarian disaster, with an estimated 1.9 million people displaced and more that 213,000 people forced into neighboring Chad. While there are no reliable estimates of the number of people killed as a result of the conflict, some observers project that up to 300,000 people have been killed over the past 24 months. In July 2004, the House and Senate declared the atrocities in Darfur genocide, and the Bush Administration reached the same conclusion in September 2004.Relations between the United States and Sudan are poor in part because of Khartoum’s human rights violations, its war policy in the south, and its support for international terror-ism, although in recent months relations have improved somewhat. ...
