Product Description
The successful maintenance of peace since 1814 made neutrality a widely popular doctrine in Sweden. Rather than a security policy in the strict sense, it has become a cornerstone of Swedish national identity. Yet, in the past decade the neutrality tradition has been called into question. This book analyzes the emergence, institutionalization, and reassessment of neutrality, of the notion of peace as a national good, from the 16th century to the present debate on NATO membership. ... Product Description
In a time when the threats inherent to the Cold War have been largely forgotten, and replaced with fears of terrorist attacks and epidemics, this book returns to the not so distant past in search for knowledge on how threats grown and decline in a societal context. The repeated submarine hunts that took place along the Swedish coast throughout the 1980s and early 1990s caused a massive debate on the nature of this threat, relating it to Swedish-Soviet relations, Swedish military capabilities, and its position in the larger East-West conflict. Although never solved, or indeed fully understood, interest in the mystery of uninvited visitors faded away as the Cold War came to an end and the prime suspect ceased to exist.

Within the complex fabric of the New Cold War, Sweden's security policy faced multiple challenges at the outset of the 1980s, yet the submarine threat became the main concern in the public debate, and it resulted in damaging partisan battles. Why did that happen? Which actors portrayed the acuteness of this alleged danger, and how did that resonate with the media and the general public? How has this problem stayed politically sensitive even into the new century? All of these questions are investigated in this book, and the answers generated are used to shed light on the general issue of threat politics in modern society. ... Read more

Product Description
What lessons does the current economic crisis in Sweden offer for other economies? Written in a clear and precise style and using modern theories of macroeconomics and economic policy to analyze Sweden's serious economic situation, Turning Sweden Around outlines recommendations for change that are both unusual and provocative. Combining economic and political analysis it covers wide-ranging areas and broad structural issues that encompass the necessity for institutional reforms as well as economic change. The plunge in Sweden's economy has taken many by surprise, showing how much more vulnerable Sweden has been to macroeconomic disturbance than previously believed. Since 1990 industrial output has fallen dramatically, total unemployment has grown to 12 percent, the public sector deficit is 13 percent of GDP, and since the country shifted to a floating exchange rate last fall, the krona has depreciated by more than 20 percent. The authors identify the deficiencies of Sweden's economic and political institutions, and suggest remedies that cut across virtually all aspects of economic and political life: product and factor markets, the system of wage formation, the public sector, and central and local government. They show that many of the current problems stem from an unclear division of responsibilities, describing a government that has taken on so many tasks that it is unable to fulfill its core obligations. Three chapters tackle the basic problems in the Swedish economy -- stability, efficiency, and growth -- while a fourth chapter suggests how to change the political system to strengthen democracy. ...
