1-0 out of 5 stars difficult and tedious
Although the two CDs cover a lot of material and the price is low, this course consists of nothing but vocabulary words and phrases to memorize, with no explanations of grammar or usage. For me at least, this has got to be one of the most difficult, boring and uninspiring ways to attempt to learn a language.

This type of course might be useful if you were a tourist on a short visit to a country where no one spoke English and you only needed to memorize some survival phrases. But it's not so useful for Sweden. ... Read more

Product Description
The purpose of this study is to give a thorough and detailed account and analysis of the semantics of twelve Swedish dimensional adjectives: hog 'high/tall,' lag 'low,' bred 'broad/wide,' smal 'narrow/thin,' vid 'broad,' trang 'narrow,' tjock 'thick,' tunn 'thin,' djup 'deep,' grund 'narrow,' lang 'long,' and kort 'short.' Focus has been placed on their spatial, non-metaphorical sense.

The study was written within the framework of cognitive linguistics, where lexical definitions may be given in terms of prototypical and peripheral uses. Four sources of data have been considered: a corpus, consisting of contemporary fiction, an elicitation test, designed for the purpose, dictionary articles on the pertinent adjectives, and the author's own linguistic intuition as a native speaker. The methodology has involved categorization of combinations of adjective and noun, based upon three major themes: orientation, function, and shape.

In order to determine prototypical uses, precedence has been given to the outcome of the elicitation test over the corpus search. For both sources, frequency has played an important part. The ranking of senses as stated in the dictionary articles has also been considered. The results indicate that the dimensional adjectives differ quite markedly from each other, as opposed to a structural view where the adjectives traditionally have been regarded as forming a neat patchwork. ... Product Description
This book examines in some detail two issues associated with Swedish noun phrases. Firstly, it considers the issue of the headedness of these phrases in the light of a general discussion of criteria for head status. Secondly, the status of the definite ending is discussed from a typological perspective. Based on the findings of this examination of the data, a theoretical account of Swedish noun phrases is provided in terms of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic Swedish Grammar
This is an adequate guide to Swedish grammar.

It is organised into parts of speech. Each grammatical point is clearly numbered and cross-references are given. But I find the page layout to be a bit busy and cluttered. I would have liked the examples to be more clearly tabulated (this is probably mostly personal taste however).

As a text, it does not go into very much detail, and it is not a book of interesting explanations, but the main points seem to have been covered (albeit in a rather dry and dull way).

Some of the language examples do show their age (understandably), so a beginner might want to beware of this. For example, in Sweden, the pronoun "ni" is mostly used as the plural "you" and, it seems, very rarely as a polite singular "you" (a suggested usage in this book). I found this out when I went to Sweden and followed the advice of the phrase books I had to use "ni" when wanting to show respect. (My attempt was met with giggles and the comment "so *very* polite!)

As a guide for modern usage, I would go for something a bit more current. But, it is perfectly adequate for what it is.

Product Description
The aims of this doctoral dissertation were to examine the utilization of various linguistic levels in the oral reading of running texts among Swedish beginning readers, and specifically to question the supposedly predominant role of lower (i.e. sub-lexical) linguistic levels by also examining possible evidence of the utilization of information at the syntactic or semantic levels, as well as textual context. The investigation is based on a corpus constructed from the oral reading of running texts and includes a number of studies using both quantitative and qualitative error analyses. The analyses confirm that other linguistic levels than the sub-lexical have an impact on reading. This was shown both in the linguistic acceptability of errors and the extent to which errors were corrected depending on linguistic acceptability.

Although the natural point of departure seemed to be the graphic level, analyses revealed that graphemic complexity or word transparency alone could not explain error frequencies. In quite a few cases, qualitative analyses revealed, for instance, that higher linguistic levels or knowledge of the world could explain both why words did and did not result in reading errors. However, phonological quantity appeared to be a major difficulty throughout the study, which is clearly related to the graphemic or phonological effect.

Some differences regarding the developmental perspective were observed. One study indicated that the readers might develop stepwise regarding their utilization of various linguistic levels, in the sense that they appeared to rely mainly on lower linguistic levels early in reading development. Later, they seemed to be dependent on higher linguistic levels, and ultimately they seemed sensitive to, rather than dependent on, higher linguistic levels. An interesting result was that the readers seemed to use different strategies for different kinds of words throughout the investigation, using a direct decoding strategy for frequent words, but using a letter-by-letter strategy for less frequent or graphemically complex words. ...
