Product Description
At 14, Lynne Cox swam 26 miles from Catalina Island to the California mainland; at 15 and 16, she broke the men's and women's world records for swimming the English Channel - a 33-mile crossing; at 18, she swam the 20-mile Cook Strait between North and South Islands of New Zealand; she was the first to swim the Strait of Magellan, the most treacherous 3-mile stretch of water in the world; she was first to swim the Bering Strait from Alaska to Siberia, thereby opening the U.S.-Soviet border for the first time in 48 years; and the first to swim the Cape of Good Hope (a shark emerged from the kelp, its jaws wide open, and was shot as it headed straight for her). And finally she is the first person to have swum a mile in 0 degree water in Antarctica. Lynne Cox writes about swimming the way Saint-Exupery wrote about flying, and one sees how swimming, like flying, can stretch the wings of the spirit. Lynne is an extraordinary achiever, but it is her enthusiasm and warmth, along with her respect for others, that come through above all in her writing, which is as easy and natural as her swimming ability.'Swimming to Antarctica' is thrilling, modest, vivid and lyrical, an inspiring account of a life of aspiration and adventure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young girls
Swimming is a sport that attracks so many girls, and this book can help them get a picture of what it means to be a champion. It is an easy read.It reaveals some of the things she struggled with in her life as she grew up.We used this book to write a biography report. The appendix has a list of highlights of Jenny's career, and a history of women's swimming.I also appreciate the "Sports Talk" section that is a spring board for discussing (1) dealing with disappointment, (2)body image, (3) competitive anxiety, (4) benefits of Sports participation for girls, and (5) other general questions about competing in sports.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is a great idea.Jenny Thompson is a great choice for an inspirational story for young athletes, but the book is sub-par.The artwork is embarrassingly bad, using crude line drawings.Important obstacles are mentioned without fully being explained as to how they impacted Thompson or how she overcame them.Jenny Thompson's is an inspiring story worthy of a better book

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring role model
I love this book! It's a great story of how sports can shape your life in a positive way. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike will be inspired by Jenny's story. This great book is now available as an e-book for those of you who can't find a copy of the original printing. You can order here from amazon.com, the isbn is B0001GDOUQ.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure
Fast Lane To Victory is the third in Wish Publishing's outstanding "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and the story of swim champion Jenny Thompson. Swimming was what Jenny like best, but when her friends at school started to tease her and call her "tomboy" and "Too Tall Thompson", she felt the pressures placed on a lot of young girls to conform to social norms of what was "proper" for girls. Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure and became so successful as an athlete that she came to be called the "Fastest Swimmer in the World". Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are the first two volumes in this superbly presented and inspiring sports oriented series for girls: A Drive To Win: The Story Of Nancy Lieberman (40-8, ...) and Sword Of A Champion: The Story Of Sharon Monplaisir (39-4, ...). ... The long awaited new edition of Swimming updates the highly successful first edition edited by Costill, Maglishco and Richardson which was published in the early 1990s. 5-0 out of 5 stars For Rookie Coaches of Novice Swimmers
I bought this book for my 13 year old son who will be a junior coach for his summer league team this summer. It will be his first time coaching, and even though he is a year-round competitive swimmer, this book is perfect for him. While it is written for the parent volunteer coach it is also perfect for any first time coach - regardless of age and regardless of their swimming knowledge.

The section on communication is insightful and outlines quite a few tools for teaching a skill to novice swimmers - tools that can be used for teaching children just about anything. The gifted and experienced educator might think of these things as second nature but anyone new to coaching needs to think about how to go about it and this book provides that information.

When reading about how to constructively criticize and encourage young swimmers my son exclaimed,"Hey, that's exactly what my coach does!"

The sections on planning and safety are thoughtful and thorough. The drills and skills outlined in the book are the basics and those that every coach goes back to time and again. The sample practice outline is perhaps a little ambitious for the average summer league team with too little time in the pool, but it is a good outline and can easily be adapted to the limits of shorter practice times.

The down side:The section on Conduct of a Meet is so basic that if you don't already know it, you really shouldn't be coaching a swim team.

One thing missing that would be helpful is a primer on how to seed a dual meet.

The book is exactly what the product description claims: A guide for the first time coach of novice swimmers.I reccomend it to anyone new to coaching swimming.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good forsummerswimteams
I did notrealize from the description that the book was aimed at summer teams and people who know very little about swimming. It is a goodbeginning book but was not particularly helpful to me as I wanted information for a high schoolteam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I know what to do!
I've just started co-coaching a small club in Kinsale, Co. Cork. I'm a competitive swimmer and knew what I wanted to get across, but not how. John Leonard's book has really made a difference. I'm now structuring sessionsin a useful way and I know I'm communicating better with the swimmers. Ishall be introducing his suggestions about setting objectives and using abulletin board when we start training again after Easter. I'm confidentthat my swimmers will benefit. Thanks John. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What to do out of the water
I was somewhat dissapointed in this book but by the same token taken by pleasant surprise regarding certain aspects of the book. It is not great on technique and the mechanics of swimming; for that lack of information I was dissapointed. To the authors credit he tells you right out the gate that this is not what you will find in this book and suggests some other books. This was helpful. The information regarding various excercises that can be done in the gym to help your swimming was excellent and most beneficial. Being a very average recreational swimmer I found this helpful for taking that next step using swimming as a cardio vascular excercise routine. All in all I enjoyed this book on what to do out of the water. Recommended for seniorslooking to better understand the physical aspects of swimming and how to improve your overall conditioning .

2-0 out of 5 stars not the basics
I just started swimming and was expecting some " how to swim better" tips. This book is more about the next level, which is not bad, just not what I expected. It focuses on swimming's effect on the body, which is informative, but is mostly focused on comeptition etc.Not useful for a novice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tips
There are plenty of good tips for the past 50 swimmer, although the book is light on technique.Excellent for the swimmer dealing with injury and any older swimmer curious about how to set up an effective workout.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
Be warned -- this book is aimed more at serious swimmers, those largely with competitive urges, than at the fitness swimmer who is interested primarily in the health benefits of swimming as exercise.

The authors are explicit about their purpose. They state: "Swimming Past 50 is not a 'learn to swim' book. [It] covers in more depth the benefits of an intense, structured training program, in order to prepare for competition."

I swam competitively in high school, 45 years ago. Recently, I decided to get back into swimming as an additional mode of exercise beside the running I've done for nearly 50 years. Because of the long time away from swimming, I felt I needed some guidance. I have on my shelf two books from this same series: "Weight Training Past 50" and "Running Past 50." I found both of those helpful for someone with my interests. I thought that "Swimming Past 50" would be the same kind of book.

However, I discovered that the book centers on serious training, with distances on the order of 3000 to 4500 yards per workout. Now, I don't have the time for that kind of training commitment, nor the interest in working through the multiple levels of training cycles described (multiyear, annual, macrocycle, microcycle, and workout -- one or two per day!!), nor the cascades of sets of laps at different paces, etc., etc., that this book describes and recommends.

If you are interested in being this kind of serious swimmer, as opposed to someone (like me) who only wants a less impactful form of exercise, perhaps you will find this book useful. I give it only three stars to emphasize that the raves it gets from other reviewers need a touch of circumspection.

5-0 out of 5 stars written by a swimmer for swimmers
Mel understands every aspect of serious swimming and is able to communicate his life's experience with the sport in an understandable and enjoyable way.As a fellow US Masters swimmer, I especially apprecitatehis knowledge of what it takes to get faster on a continuing basis throughan understanding of stroke mechanics and training. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
The book is somewhat outdated, refers to freestyle as the "crawl stoke". Nothing is this book will help a first time coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information
This book is a great source of information and ideas for coaching swim.
Currently I coach on an age-group YMCA swim team and I am always looking for new ways to create effective practices. This book is written in an easy to search format and it gives examples that translate easily to 10 year olds!I recommend this book for age group swimming!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed reaction
This book had some nice ideas in it, but as a first time coach for young swimmers, this book was not terribly helpful to me, since the whole book is geared towards coaching adult swimmers. It covers just about everything else to do with coaching, but not in terrific detail. All in all, it's ok, it has good ideas in, and is probably good for a first book for an adult coach, but you will need more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I found this book to be very helpful to a first time coach for first-time-on-a-swim-team swimmers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for coaches
This is NOT a useful book for coaches, although it can be helpful for people without a coaching education or a good swimming background. Unfortunately, this book lacks every form of depth and I don't understand why all the reviews until now were extremely positive. Dick Hannula was a great coach, but this isn't a great book. I guess the readers were lead by pride instead of objectivity.
Coaching Swimming Successfully has an attractive title, but is somewhat misleading. While reading, you do get some new thoughts about coaching, but it will not make you a coach successfully.
The book is written with a first-person narrator and would be more interesting if it wasn't, since you will get annoyed after a while by every self-glorification of the writer and his successes. Besides, it's mainly focused on the American swimming school (planning and preparation, club swimming vs. high school swimming, yard pools, etc.) and it lacks some ability for extrapolation for other swimming countries.

The `Coaching Stroke Technique' part is redundant if you are a qualified coach and you still have your textbook from the course.

The book is easy to read, gives some new thoughts and can therefore help you coach more successfully, but it is too superficial and limited for a swimming coach. ... Read more
