5-0 out of 5 stars What do the Swiss eat, anyway?
We were discussing Switzerland recently, and someone asked, 'What do the Swiss eat, anyway?' Apart from the obvious -- cheese and chocolate -- I had no idea. But then I found this attractive book, and now my questions are answered.

Sue Style here tackles the difficult task of giving us a culinary portrait of a nation which, as she points out in her introduction, is 'at least four countries rolled into one,' not counting influences from neighboring countries and cultures. The key, she says, is in realizing that Swiss food, wine, and tastes aren't monolithic, but rather vary (sometimes widely) from canton to canton.

Aided by John Miller's skilled photography of landscapes (sometimes I wonder if it's even possible to take an unattractive photo of Switzerland), people, and ... not least of all ... food, Style not only gives us a wide variety of recipes, but also shows how those foods fit into the broader Swiss lifestyle. Bread, cheese, chocolate, and sausage ... each gets its own chapter, as do Swiss winemaking (who knew? -- 'Many Swiss wines never make it beyond the confines of the canton, let alone the country' -- yet some are apparently quite nice) and the art of the Swiss innkeeper.

In all, whether you have no experience of Swiss food at all, or are a former visitor or resident looking to recreate happy memories, Sue Style's book seems like an excellent way to explore the surprisingly varied world of Swiss tastes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars buy this now!!
This book is full of great recipes, but what I really love is all the details she goes into. Shortcuts, back stories, helpful hints: you won't regret getting this. Even though there are no photographs- something that usually stops me dead from buying a cookbook- there are illustrations for finished products and besides, if you're buying a book on amazon.com you should know how to find pictures online. I also haven't had a problem with anything I've made from this book yet. If you're thinking about buying this, do! You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all who love the art of cuisine.
Sarah Kelly Iaia was an American born, London based, world traveling food editor of Bride Magazine UK. She entertained kings and captains of industry. Her "how to" cook book breezes you through the complex techniqes of "haute" holiday baking and entertains you all the way. A must have for all who love the art of cuisine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Requires meticulous planning; excellent results
Recipes in this book are not for novice bakers, neither are they for habitual offenders of baking mixes aisles or those who are afraid to touch dough with their bare hands. Following recipes of Sarah Kelly Iaia requires well-stocked pantry, precision, discipline, and ability to plan ahead. Many recipes specify that the dough is made a day in advance, and many baked goods are better 2 weeks - a month after baking. On a positive note, many ingredients are quite accessible and not expensive.

The taste and look of all those goodies is distinctly European and suit best those who like artisan baking. If you prefer chewey cookies, heavy cakes like German chocolate cake (which is not German at all), supermarket-sold white bread, and chemically tasting birthday cakes sold at price clubs, chances are you will not like most of cakes, breads, and cookies made from recipes in this book. However, this book is very usefull if you wish to enrich your baking repertoir, impress your guests or coworkers, or need to send a lot of presents across the country around Christmas. The author, using very specific easy-to-follow directions helps muster different types of gingerbreads, Sunday breads, stollen, crumbly sweet pretzels, and nut layer cakes. Both children and adults like chocolate-glazed heart-shaped honey cookies, the recipe for which alone is worth the price of this book.

I would prefer more photographs of finished products, but overall I have been quite satisfied with the results even without them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bouquets to this "flower" girl! She's precious!
David Michael Slater is an extremely gifted writer of children's picture books. The first Slater book I read was Cheese Louise! and I was so enamored I became a fan for life.

I haven't read all his books, but the two others I've read were just as enchanting: Flour Girl (Missy Swiss & More) is a natural to follow his award-winning The Ring Bear that I recently reviewed (five stars, of course).

I can also see why Flour Girl (Missy Swiss & More) received The Mom's Choice Awards® honor for excellence by their esteemed panel of judges: The main character is a charming little girl who feels threatened when her father tells her he's going to remarry and asks her to be the flower girl. The cover will give you a clue as to how Dahvi goes about her plan to "keep her father to herself."

Although I trusted this author, at first I feared this book would be just like The Ring Bear, only for girls this time around.Uh-oh, I thought! But how wrong I was to even harbor that notion. Slater takes a similar theme and with wit and imagination makes it entirely unique. Little Dahvi's plans are foiled, of course, but everyone has a good time with her antics and she learns a valuable lesson about how important she really is. Children who read this book will learn along with her; that's the beauty of Slater's style.

What a wonderful imagination David Michael Slater has; accompanied by a sharp wit and keen sense of family values, it's a combination that can't be beat in a children's scribe. I predict he will soon be one of the best-known, beloved children's writers of our day. Scott Brooks's fabulous illustrations are the perfect complement to Slater's prose. An award-winning team, that's for certain.

I'm sure you will place Slater in high esteem and fall in love with little Dahvi too. Honestly, who could resist that cute little imp on the cover?

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm tale
A compassionate tale about a child undergoing transition, Flour Girl is a heartwarming story that is sure to resonate.Like Slater's corresponding piece about a boy, The Ring Bear, Flour Girl shows a girl who is dealing with pending marriage of a parent.Sophie willfully misinterprets her role to undermine the marriage that she sees as threatening her relationship with her father. She comes to learn, however, that she can not only survive but thrive in the new situation. The theme is treated with precision and respect, and the tale is a powerful reminder to kids about how important they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This book is another gem from an author who is still somehow not well
known. I first wondered whether FLOUR GIRL would be a superfluous attempt
to tell the same story as THE RING BEAR (another wonderful book), but for girls.
In fact, it is warm, witty and wise like THE RING BEAR, but all in its own
way. As a pair, these books should be required reading for any kids
dealing with remarriage, but this author's gift is that he makes the
stories appealing to anyone simply looking for a good picture book. How is
Scott Brooks not better known as well? The art is amazing. And who ever
heard of a publisher releasing six picture books at once from an author?
Magic Wagon seems to know what they're doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!
Flour Girl is a silly companion to The Ring Bear, also by David Michael Slater.Little kids can relate to Sophie about mixing up words and their meanings.Flour Girl is hilarious and Sophie is a cute and mischeivious character.Children will love reading Flour Girl! ... Read more
