Taiwan is located in the Western Pacific about 160 km off China's southeast coast, midway between Japan and the Philippines. Taiwan and its adjacent islands have an area of approximately 36,000 sq. km. Taiwan is about 394 km long and 144 km wide at its broadest point. Rising to a height of 3,492 meters above sea level, Mount Tapa in Shei-pa National Park is a great challenge for hikers. (File photo of the GIO) Taiwan's five longitudinal mountain ranges occupy almost half of the island's total land area. The Central Range forms the backbone of Taiwan and includes Mount Jade, the island's highest peak at 3,952 meters. Other important features include dormant volcanic mountains, foothills, tablelands, terraces, coastal plains, and basins. Only 30 percent of the land is arable. Taiwan's climate is subtropical in the north and tropical in the south, with average temperatures ranging from 28 deg C in July to 14 deg C in January. Summers, which start in May and last through September, are usually hot and humid, with daytime temperatures between 27 deg C and 35 deg C. Short and mild winters last from December through February, with snowfall only occurring on the island's higher mountains. Rainfall varies greatly according to season, location, and altitude. The average rainfall is about 2,515 mm per year. Three to four typhoons hit Taiwan every year, providing much of the island's water supply but also causing damage, flooding, and landslides. Located at the junction of the Philippine and Eurasia plates, Taiwan has significant seismic activity.

Separated from Mainland China by the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan is bordered by the South China sea in the south, the East China Sea in the north, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Approximately half of Taiwan Island is covered by the Chungyang Range. Their highest elevation is 3,997 m (13,114 ft) at Mount Jade (Yu Shan). The most productive land is found west of this range where broad, fertile plains are found as well as basins that gently slope down to the Taiwan Strait. Immediately east of the mountain range, precipitous cliffs are found that drop down 760 m (2500 ft) to the Pacific Ocean. Of the surrounding islands, two are officially part of a mainland Chinese province, the Matsu and Chinmen islands with one group, the Spratly Islands, claimed by Taiwan and several countries including mainland China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Taiwan's has abundant rainfall, with goes with its tropical and subtropical climate. Approximately 4,000 mm (160 in) of precipitation is Taiwan's yearly average, with the north and south differing in their rainy seasons. North Taiwan's northeast monsoon brings heavy rainfall during the winter from October to March, while the South's southwest monsoon brings typhoons from June to October and heavy rainfall. Humidity and heat make up the summer climate with the temperature averaging 82 degrees F (28 degrees C). Winters are generally mild, lasting from December to February and averaging temperatures of 64 degrees F (18 degrees C).

The island chain closest to the continent marks the edge of the Asiatic Continental Shelf. Taiwan, one of the islands of this chain, is the largest body of land between Japan and the Philippines. The island of Taiwan is roughly shaped like a tobacco leaf. It is located between 21.53 and 25.18N latitude and between 120.01 and 121.59E longitude, straddling the Tropic of Cancer. It is 394 km long and 144 km broad at its widest point. With a total area of nearly 36,000 sq. km, Taiwan is the smallest province of the Republic of China. Taiwan is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Taiwan Straits, which is about 220 km at its widest point and 130 km at its narrowest. The island is almost equidistant from Shanghai and Hong Kong. Topographic Features The surface geology of the island varies in age from very recent alluvial deposits to early sedimentary and crystalline rocks. The structure, relatively simple for the most part, is formed by a tilted fault block running roughly northeast to southwest along the entire length. The steep slope of this tilted block faces east and the rock mass slopes more gently to the west. This block is composed primarily of old rocks, some of which have been subjected to heat and pressure. Because of the terrain, scarcely more than one-third of the land area is arable. The mountains are mostly forested, with some minerals chiefly coal at the northern end.

A chain of 64 small islands to the west, known as the association with Taiwan. Ownership of Tiao Yu Island, which lies between Taiwan and Okinawa, has been hotly contested by the governments of Taiwan, Japan and the PRC in recent years.
