Extractions: Tsao, 83, who will be teaching a new course in his field of expertise at Jin Wen Institute of Technology, is considered a legend among his Taiwanese peers. Although his highest level of formal education is high school, he is currently a research fellow at Academia Sinica, the top research institute in Taiwan. Tsao has received numerous awards from academic institutes and the government. He has even been awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Knighthood by the Dutch royal family. Tsao commanded an audience of over 500 students on Tuesday. Although participants listened attentively, Tsao insists his nervousness during his presentation prevented him from delivering the full breadth of his thoughts on the geographical characteristic of Taiwan as an ocean island, and its relation to Taiwan's economics and business development. Tsao's new course at the technology institute is called "the utilization and management of the oceans," a course designed for general students and those majoring in international trade. Tsao received an overwhelming welcome in the school's assembly hall on Tuesday and drew around 500 students to his lecture.

The first inhabitants of Taiwan were not Chinese at all - Taiwan has always been on the preiphery of the Chinese Empire and, although Chinese history dates back more than 3000 years, there was no significant Chinese migration to Taiwan until the 15th century. Taiwan's earliest inhabitants-these days simply known as 'aborigines' - probably migrated from the Pacific islands, as evidenced by their racial features which resemble those of the people of the nearby Philippines. When the Chinese arrived in Taiwan, there were two distinct groups of aborigines. Onelived on the rich plains of central and southwestern Taiwan, and the other groupl live in the mountains. The 17th Century: Interestingly enough, the most comprehensive historical records on Taiwan go back some 350 years, to the period of the Dutch occupation, 1624-1662. When the Dutch East Indies Company arrived, they found only the aborigine population on the island: there were no signs of any administrative structure of the Chinese Imperial Government. My reading of the history of this island indicates that the island (formally known as Formosa) was populated by Polynesian people until about 1560, when the losers in various military conflicts on the mainland took refuge on Taiwan. This continued over the following decades. At one stage, Taiwan was a colony of some European power, and then in about 1890, Japan took control of Taiwan. Japanese control lasted until about 1945, at which time it was handed over to mainland China. About 3-4 years later, after the communist forces defeated the nationalist forces, the latter took refuge on Taiwan.

Extractions: A Modern History of Tiawan: Taiwan was included as a part of the territory of Ching Dynasty, belonging to Fu-Jian Province in 1683. In 1885, Taiwan was promoted to be one of the provinces of Ching Dynasty. However, Ching Dynasty ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895. From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan was governed by Japanese. From 1896, music was one of the optional subjects in school. The songs taught were Japanese patriot songs, and working songs. Those songs came from traditional Japanese songs and Japanese translated European songs. It was also in this time the western folk songs and classical music were introduced to Taiwan by the Japanese music curricula. In 1945, due to lose in the Second World War, Japanese returned Taiwan to the Republic of China, which was founded in 1911 after overthrew the Ching Dynasty. Mandarin Chinese songs were used to educate various groups of people in Taiwan to identify themselves as a member of Republic of China and to teach them to speak Mandarin Chinese instead of Japanese, Taiwanese or any other dialects and languages. The 20th Century Chinese Immigrants In 1949, the government of the Republic of China moved to Taiwan. The Mainland China became a communist country, the People's Republic of China. Due to the civil war and the move, a lot of Chinese immigrated to Taiwan from Mainland. These immigrants came to Taiwan with their regional folksongs, folk music, and folk operas. Extractions: Taiwan: History The earliest Chinese settlements on Taiwan began in the 7th century, chiefly from the mainland provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. The island was reached in 1590 by the Portuguese, who named it Formosa [=beautiful]. In 1624 the Dutch founded forts in the south at present T'ai-nan, while the Spanish established bases in the north. The Dutch, however, succeeded in expelling the Spaniards in 1641 and assumed control of the entire island. They in turn were forced to abandon Taiwan in 1662, when Koxinga, a general of the Ming dynasty of China who had to flee from the Manchus, seized the island and established an independent kingdom. However, the island fell to the Manchus in 1683. Chinese immigration increased, and the aboriginal population was gradually pushed into the interior. Japan, attracted by the island's strategic and economic importance, acquired Taiwan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895) after the First Sino-Japanese War . Japan exploited the island for the benefit of the Japanese home economy and tried to establish Japanese as the language of the island. The island was scarcely used, however, for Japanese colonization. Under Japan, Taiwan's economy was modernized and industrialized, railroads were built, and the large cities expanded. During World War II, Taiwan was heavily bombed by U.S. planes. In accordance with the Cairo declaration of 1943 and the Potsdam Conference of 1945, Taiwan was returned to China as a province after the war.
