Extractions: Music and cultural performances have always been an integral part of film and it is in recognition of this that local and international music has played a major role alongside other performing arts during the Festival of the Dhow Countries. All over the world music is a very popular medium for bringing people together and can act as a powerful means of communicating positive messages. Indeed, in terms of raising awareness of social issues of the day, musicians are more influential than politicians. The music of Tanzania has been influenced both from within the African continent and also from outside via long-established trade routes. The coastal areas were influenced by contact with Arabic and Indonesian cultures. It is thought, for instance, that box-resonating zithers and flat-bar xylophones could have been imported from Indonesia. There is also a definite Islamic influence on styles of coastal singing and types of instrument, such as the Swahili udi, an unfretted plucked lute nearly identical to the Arabic 'ud. Taarab, which began as an entertainment genre among the elite, has become a prominent urban popular style, using 'udi, harmonium, accordion, and drums. More recently it has been electrified. The cultural intercourse between Tanzania and the Arab world was mutual, as evidenced by the exportation of the leiwah dance genre to Bahrain.

The Arab influence on Zanzibar and Pemba islands is evident in the people, who are a mix of Shirazia (from Persia), Arabs, Comorians (from the Comoros Islands) and Bantu from the mainland, though the latter predominate. Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority. The major non-Bantu people on the mainland are the Masai (Nilotic speakers) who inhabit the north-eastern section of the country. Swahili and English are the official languages, with English the principal language of commerce. There are also many local African tongues, reflecting the tribal diversity of the country. Outside the cities and towns, far fewer local people speak English than in comparable areas in Kenya. It's said that the Swahili spoken on Zanzibar is of a much purer form than elsewhere, and quite a few travellers head for the island to learn it. The two main religions are Christianity and Islam, with Hindus making up about a quarter of the population. The majority of Muslims are concentrated along the coast and in the islands. Compared to Islam, Christianity took a long time to make an impact, and even then (during the 19th century) it was practiced mainly among tribes of the interior. There are still many tribes who follow neither of the big-name religions and instead worship the ancient spirit of their choice. Principal among them are the Masai, who put their faith in the god Engai and his Messiah, Kindong'oi, from whom their priests are said to be descended. It's claimed that there is no religious bias present in the country's political and civil administration.

Extractions: RADIO IN TANZANIA This article was originally published in The Journal of the North American Shortwave Association Most of Africa's many nations get little outside attention, and Tanzania is no exception. The only time it really made news was during World War I when it was the German colony of Tanganyika. With the outbreak of war, the Germans were cut off from their homeland by the British navy. Rather than surrender, a small number of German officers and several thousand African soldiers lived off the land and fought a brillant guerilla campaign against a much larger force of British and Belgian troops. Their tactics drew worldwide attention and countless news stories told of the Tanganyikan campaign. The Tanganyikan Germans were never really defeated and didn't surrender until two weeks after Germany. Tanganyika became a British territory and slipped into oblivion, overshadowed by Kenya to the north, despite Kenya's having only the population. Throughout the 1950s, African countries began looking for independence, and Tanganyika was no exception. While some countries resorted to violence and riots, Tanganyika gently but firmly made its case for independence through non-violence under the leadership of Julius Nyerere and his TANU party. Slowly the British were persuaded, and in December, 1961, Tanganyika became independent President Nyerere.

Sacae Culture of Kazakhstan Cattle-breeding population of Middle Asia and Kazakhstan was known as the Sacae in Persian Achemenid sources. Fishermen and nomads, these tribes are described by Herodotus, as well, but he subdivided them into a multitude of small communities. The Sacae were distinguished by their high level of development in all areas of knowledge, the reason for which is as of yet unknown.
