Mainland Tanzania is bordered on the south by Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia; on the west by Congo (Kinshasa), Burundi, and Rwanda; on the north by Uganda and Kenya; and on the east by the Indian Ocean. Lake Nyasa forms part of the southern boundary, Lake Tanganyika part of the western boundary, and Lake Victoria part of the northern boundary. Dar-es-Salaam is the former capital and largest city of the republic. The Tanzanian legislature moved to the new capital of Dodoma in 1996, but many government offices remained temporarily in Dar-es-Salaam.

To the north west the country stretches to Lake Victoria, to the west lie Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa. Tanzania has a common border with Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west; and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south. The country displays a variety of physical features; from a narrow coastal belt with tropical beaches it rises to an extensive plateau covered by savannah and bush at an elevation of about 1,000 metres. The plateau area is fringed by narrow belts of forested highlands which include the snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro (5,897 metres), the highest mountain in Africa. Lakes Tanganyika, Nyasa and Rukwa partly occupy the floor of the great rift valley system. At 358 metres below sea level, the floor of Lake Tanganyika is Africa's lowest point. Tanzania has over 800 kilometres of palm-fringed Indian Ocean coastline with sweeping sandy beaches, coral reefs, mangroves and many islands, the largest of which is Zanzibar. Climate Tanzania is a tropical country which has four main climatic zones: the hot, humid coastal plains; the hot, arid zone of the central plateau; high, moist lake regions; and temperate highlands. The climate is governed by two monsoons. The north east monsoon from December to March brings the year's hottest temperatures and when the winds shift to the south from March to May, they bring heavy intermittent rains. The south west monsoon extends from June to September bringing relatively cool, dry weather. A smaller wet season occurs in November and December.
