Previously he held a British Academy Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Department of Geography in the University of Cambridge. He studied for his PhD in the Anthropology Department of University College London. Dan has examined the environmental and social consequences of nature conservation and resource use in Africa and has completed two major research projects in Tanzania exploring these issues. He is particularly interested in the power of international conservation agendas, national government policy and local attempts to subvert and resist the consequences of both. He has also explored the dynamics of institutions of common pool resource management, which led to a study of local government structures and practises in Tanzania. Current work examines the nature and politics of third world environmentalisms, human agency in environmental change and ways of responding to environmental change. His interest in environments in based on the problems of inequality. He is concerned with how it inequality is justified, how perpetrated, how resisted, defied and how people cope with it.

It is worth dwelling for a moment on some of the facts that make the country such a superb destination. Some General Information Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa (although not in Africa as a whole, the Sudan is 3 times larger), it’s landmass covering an area of just over 945,000 sq. km (including Zanzibar). This makes Tanzania about the size of France, Germany and Switzerland combined; 3 times the size of the entire British Isles or one tenth the size of the whole of the USA. Tanzania’s population at the last official census was 28.2 million, with approximately one third being classified as “urban” despite agriculture forming roughly half of GDP and agriproducts (e.g.: coffee, tea, tobacco, cashewnut, sisal, cotton) some 75% of export earnings. Dodoma, in central Tanzania, is the political capital of the country although Dar es Salaam is the effective trading and business capital, with it’s safe harbour "(Dar es Salaam” means “Haven of Peace”), international airport and population of some 1.75million.

This is one of the most beautiful and interesting places on the planet. Moshi is just 21 miles (34 km.) south of Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895 m./19,340 ft.), the highest mountain in Africa located near the northeastern border. The volcanic peak, which lies just south of the equator, is snow-capped year round. On the borders of the country lie three of the great lakes of Africa. Lake Victoria is located on the northwest border with Kenya, west of Kilimanjaro, Lake Tanganyika on the western border, and Lake Malawi (Nyasa) on the southwest. The Rift Valley is a tremendous geological fault system extending from Mozambique to the Middle East, and Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika lie within its vast confines. The Serengeti is the world's largest wildlife refuge. Its name means "endless plains" in Maasai. An estimated three million large animals inhabitat an area equal to the size of Northern Ireland. These giant movements of wildlife consume vast quantities of grass each day, in the thousands of tons, and are on continual search for water and grass. The vegetation in the Serengeti consists of short and long grass plains, an acacia savannah and wooded grasslands. Olduvai Gorge is famous for its distinction as the home of Zinjanthropus and Homo Habilis from millions of years ago, literally the "Dawn of Man". Stone age hunters have marked their passing by leaving hundreds of rock paintings in the southern highlands of Tanzania. The descendants of the Bantu peoples, who migrated south some 2000 years ago, now populate Tanzania. The KiSwahili language of today was a trade language, created about 1000 years ago by a blending of Persian, Arabic and Bantu.

    Extractions: The Park lies on the western arm of Africa's Great Rift Valley, a 5600-kilometer crack in the earth's crust that was caused by the East African tectonic plate slowly drifting eastward away from the rest of the continent. Here, the trough has been filled by water to create Lake Tanganyika, the world's second deepest lake, down to 1400 meters deep. Formed about 20 million years ago, it is the oldest of the Rift Valley lakes. The lake is fed by drainage from Zaire, Burundi and Zambia as well as from Tanzania. The largest of these rivers is the Malagarasi which drains all of north-western Tanzania into the lake about 40 kms south of Kigoma. The lake has an outlet at Kalemie in Zaire, only 100 kms across the lake from the inlet, and this is the source of the Lualaba River. It is likely that before the Rift Valley was formed, the Malagarasi and Lualaba were one continuous river flowing westward to the Atlantic.
