With him, he carried his ideas. No one ever heard of him again. But before he could cross the border, officials made him write down his ideas: "Live a simple life, be free, be yourself, and be close to nature. Do these things and you will be wise and happy." These words have been kept in a little book called Tao Te Ching, the "writings of Maps of the Way." (Book of Vertues) The scholar was Lao-tzu, the most respected thinker of his day. And the young man was confucius. Confucius spoke about his duty to make the lives of the people better. Lao-tzu answered: "Just like mosquitos will keep you awake all night, this talk about duty to your fellow man drives me crazy. Dont worry about it! Just try to keep your world as simple as possible. Rememberjust like the wind blows whenever and wherever it wants to, good times will come and sometime and somewhere. Be natural. Go with the wind." Like confucius, Lao-tzu had been troubled by the violence of his times. But he thought that it was a mistake to try to change people. He believed that people were naturally good. Man didn't have to be "controlled." Too much control was spoiling man. He saw that men were trying to live by "man-made" laws, customs, and traditions. They couldn't do this and were unhappy. If men follow the ways of Tao, the way of nature, they will lead a good life. He really told each man to "do your own thing"be yourself.

Extractions: The combining of Zen and Taoism is not new. Bodhidharma practiced Taoist yoga in India. He brought Buddhism to China where it combined with Chinese Taoism to produce living Lin Chi (Rinzai) Zen. The great Korean Zen Master Won Hyo combined both practices in the Silla dynasty 1300 years ago, practicing the same Sun-do breathing we teach here today. Japanese Zen Master Hakuin strongly emphasized the importance of Taoist breathing techniques for Zen practitioners. In the search for awakening to our Essence Mind, Zen meditation is a direct spiritual path. With awakening, all that remains is harmony, love, peace, compassion and wisdom. But with poor healthy or energy and emotional imbalances, many obstacles arise for deep sitting meditaton. Modern day Zen practitioners unknowingly are not utilizing the benefits that Taoism can bring to their practice. Also, Zen has wisdom which goes beyond the harmonizing benefits of Taoism, but Taoists do not realize this Zen wisdom and for them it is easy to become attached to their own energy.

Extractions: ANARCHISM IS USUALLY CONSIDERED a recent, Western phenomenon, but its roots reach deep in the ancient civilizations of the East. The first clear expression of an anarchist sensibility may be traced back to the Taoists in ancient China from about the sixth century BC. Indeed, the principal Taoist work, the Tao te ching , may be considered one of the greatest anarchist classics. The Taoists at the time were living in a feudal society in which law was becoming codified and government increasingly centralized and bureaucratic. Confucius was the chief spokesman of the legalistic school supporting these developments, and called for a social hierarchy in which every citizen knew his place. The Taoists for their part rejected government and believed that all could live in natural and spontaneous harmony. The conflict between those who wish to interfere and those who believe that things flourish best when left alone has continued ever since. The Taoists and the Confucians were both embedded in ancient Chinese culture. They shared a similar view of nature, but differed strongly in their moral and political views. They both had an attitude of respectful trust to human nature; the Christian notion of original sin is entirely absent from their thought. Both believed that human beings have an innate predisposition to goodness which is revealed in the instinctive reaction of anyone who sees a child falling into a well. Both claimed to defend the Tao or the way of the ancients and sought to establish voluntary order.

This is the simplest of questions, and as a typical example of Taoist paradox, almost impossible to answer; mostly because there are many answers. Let's begin with what it is not. -It is not new. Taoism is one of the most ancient traditions known to humankind. Documents containing its essence can be dated as far back as 5,000 B.C.E. (1) -It is not a "fixed" or "solid" tradition. There are many versions of Taoism; for instance, there is popular Taoism as practiced today, which is a highly developed shamanistic religion, but like another great Eastern tradition, Tantric Buddhism, it is institutional (read: hierarchical) and has evolved right out of original Taoism's founding principles. There is also what Huston Smith calls Esoteric Taoism, which mutated largely into the ch'an (or zen in Japan) school of Buddhism. Esoteric Taoism is now extinct. (2) What we are left with, then, is Philosophical Taoism (synonymous with primitive Taoism), which is as close as we are likely to get the "original Taoism" mentioned above. Philosophic Taoism is what this paper is focused on, an ideal which has guided Chinese society for millennia. -It is not Patriarchal. Chinese society certainly is, but, oddly, primitive Taoism is not. If anything, it is deeply feminine, as we shall soon see.
