Fourth Printing 2003 - Photographic Reprint, 3-D Book Productions. Hardcover, 6 3/4 x 10 3/4", 300 pages, over 245 illustrations. Since its first printing in 1982, thousands of copies of this book have been sold around the world, being widely acknowledged as the standard text on the subject. This text starts out basic enough for the absolute beginner, but advances in logical steps to cover more advanced and diverse topics.Part One begins with stereoscopic prints and stereoscopes, and includes information on making and viewing stereo prints, either with the traditional Holmes viewer or by free viewing.Part Two surveys stereo cameras, techniques, convergence, hypo and hyper stereo.Part Three faces the problems of the stereo window, mounting of slides for projection, and different techniques for different formats.Part Four details systems, screens, techniques, and showmanship.Part Five is addressed to more advanced and experienced stereographers who are ready to deal with the more esoteric points of the craft and science of good stereo projection.Part Six briefly describes such special stereo techniques as double exposures, titles, anaglyphs, and even delves into the world of auto stereoscopy or 3-D without glasses or viewing aids. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography and a list of addresses of 3-D suppliers worldwide. With over 245 illustrations, many of which are stereo pairs suitable for free viewing or viewing with a simple viewer, this volume sets out to answer the questions that are asked by everyone who wants to make his own 3-D pictures.PLUS supplement: Ferwerda's 3-D life is described in "The Man of 3-D" that comes with 21 stereo pictures on three View-Master Reels, which include highlights from his 3-D work during 1935-1980. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages!
This is a fabulous book for insect and photography enthusiasts alike. The 3-D effect is so real it is like the bugs are sitting on your nose!My 14-year-old nephew likes the book and so do my adult friends. All of Blum's 3-D books are highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book with stereo 3-D photos!
BUGS in 3-D

I highly recommended this book for school children and adults alike.

I was introduced to one of Blum's books by a friend and liked it so much that I sought out and bought all of his 3D books. I find the price so reasonable that I've since bought more to give as gifts.

I enjoy looking at the 3-D photos as much as my seven year old son so I already know several adults as well as children who will be getting this book as a gift.

The technical quality of the photos and printing of the books is very good. A magnifying, stereo viewer is built into a unique bi-fold cover of the book A little research showed that this idea is well over a hundred years old (like stereo photography) but I still find it very innovative because it is so rare and unusual.

The photographer has an inspired eye and top technical skill. The macro photography is amazing. If you buy this book hold it high with your head back when you look at the close-up of the Zebra Tarantula (plate 4). It will freak you out like your about to be eaten! Then go to plate 40 and look at the beautiful butterfly.

The writing accompanying each image adds to the photos with just the right amount of scientific and general information to serve both young and old reader. I like this book very much and I hope you find this review helpful. I recommend looking for the other 3-D books by Blum. They are all great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine example of Macro Stereo Photography
This is a wonderful book. Well designed, with fine viewer and sharp photos. A real bargain for the price. I'll need to collect the whole series. If you are familiar with stereo photography, this is a must have. If you think 3-D means added shadowing, this is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Mark Blum Book!
Mark Blum is clearly a very talented and skillful nature photographer! His books, including BUGS IN 3-D, are all FABULOUS! I can't recommend this book highly enough!

In BUGS IN 3-D, you will be shrunk to the size of a grasshopper, taken off to exotic forests, and introduced face-to-face to some really amazing insects! It is just like entering their world! INCREDIBLE!

The photography is exquisite!
The 3-D stereo effect is remarkable!
The subject is fascinating!
The price is bargain!
There are NO negatives about this book!
Children, parents, science students, naturalists; I can't think of anybody who won't love this book!

BUY IT!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
The publisher has unfortunately tried to market these fabulous works as childrens books (not that they aren't wonderful for kids as well), but these photos are truely amazing both in the quality of the photography, but also in the presentation. They are printed on very high quality coated paper with a STURDY set of lenses built right into the hard cover, which allows you to view them in all their splendor without any additional equipment.

These are not red/blue lenses! The images are presented in true color stereo pairs and when viewed, merge into a single, dynamic 3D image - WOW! I can't say enough about the overall quality of viewing for ADULTS as well as children.

The price is another thing that confuses me. I don't know why these are so inexpensive? I urge anyone who loves nature to buy all of the books in this series! ... Read more

GREAT GIFT IDEA!

"Looking at pictures of ruins shouldn't be this much fun."

WINNER OF FOUR MAJOR BOOK AWARDS:

The 2006 Independent Publisher Book Award in History
The Best Books 2006 Book Award in U.S. History
The Best Books 2006 Book Award in Photography (Techniques)

Minutes after the 1906 San Francisco quake, photographers were on the scene, documenting California's greatest natural disaster. A few had special 3-D cameras, enabling them to record the events of that fateful April in a particularly vivid and affecting medium. Their "stereo views" of the catastrophe, viewed in 3-D through a "stereoscope," were the way in which many vicariously experienced the quake and its aftermath, from the relative comfort of their own unshaken parlors.

In the award-winning new book, Earthquake Days, the story of 1906 San Francisco is told through these rare, original 3-D images---magnificently reproduced along with firsthand accounts, vintage newspapers, lithographs, and maps. Most of the stereo views in Earthquake Days are presented both as 3-D photos AND as large, 2-D photos. This huge, full-color book includes a free 3-D viewer and an illustrated history of this remarkable photographic genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earthquake Days
A SUPER BOOK - I am proud to add to my libray of 3-D Publications. Truly an inspired work. Excellent layout and a GREAT STORY to go along with the photographs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Factual and entertaining look at disaster
This book is a gem! Having a longtime interest in the SF Quake, I look forward with great interest to new books, and recently there have been a few. This one is unique in that it offers a well written text with rare glimpses of the event through steroscopic scenes. Mr. Burkhart must have spent numerous hours hunting for these never before seen photos that capture that tragic day so perfectly. Thoroughly researched and beautifully presented, I would receommend this book to seasoned historians as well as casual readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative!!
This is one of the best books I've seen about the 1906 Earthquake. As a 5th generation Californian, I am impressed not only by the multitude of 3-D images of the quake, but also by the fascinating historical accounts that this book contains.Whether you are intereted in the quake itself, the fire or the stories that go with the 1906 Earthquake, this book has something for you.My 87 year old mother loves it, as does my 5 year old grandaughter.I highly reccomend this book!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well conceived, well executed
This is not the book to pick up if you're interested in the 1906 earthquake.Although informative, that is not what this book is trying to achieve. The book is much more a history book about the way photographers using 3-D technology recorded the aftermath. As such, it provides us with amazing photography, and very good quality enlargements of the original photos, so that we may compare "flat" 2-D to the 3-D.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly unforgettable visual presentation of a sad event in American history
Earthquake Days: The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire in 3-D is an impressive photographic spectacle about the historic San Francisco Earthquake and is quite like no other treatment of the subject. The vintage black-and-white photographs have been treated so that they appear in 3-D with the aid of the accompanying viewer! The photographs are quite vivid to the naked eye as well, and the accompanying text by California-born historian David Burkhart recounts the historical debacle captured in the tragic images. In addition to the photographs of the city's devastation, Earthquake Days includes vintage newspaper clippings, sketches, cartoons, and the like concerning the disaster. A truly unforgettable visual presentation of a sad event in American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book as a reference guide
The first part of this book covers the historic aspects of Stereoscopic film making and is well written and interesting but the majority of the book is a reference guide to 3D movies. It would be difficult to assemble a finer 3-D book. Everything works. Until you see this book, you have not seen a frog, a snake or a gecko. The detail in the eyes, feet and tongues are amaizing. This book really puts things in perspective. For children AND adults.

Book Description

A child's story told through photographs, a parent's perspective as photographer, and, in the middle, the camera. With its whimsical images and illuminating text, Through the Viewing Glass is a delightful and thoughtful look at life on both sides of the lens.

More than a collection of photographs, Through the Viewing Glass raises questions of reality and perception, exploration and discovery, relationships and recollections. Punctuated with quotes from Lewis Carroll's characters and inventive design elements to fit the irreverent dialogue, it is a boy's tale of being pursued by a camera. But it doesn't end there: In Through the Viewing Glass, the authors take the reader beneath the surface, putting the interactions between ardent picture-taker and witty subject in focus.

The pictures in the book visually represent a mother's wishful thinking -- idyllic scenes of childhood; the words give voice to her subversive offspring, exposing the true, tedious circumstances. In the contradiction lies humor and insight into the dynamics of childrenand photography.

The perfect gift for the family photographer, the scrapbook creator, and those fascinated with the "viewing glass," this book examines why and how we photograph children. It will inspire readers to take a different approach when photographing daily life -- one that is more real and therefore more meaningful and memorable. ... Read more

A solid introduction to Photoshop Elements 3 that will appeal to photographers moving from traditional film and darkroom printing to digital photography. While this book doesn't venture too far into 'advanced' techniques, and doesn't explore the 'hidden features' mentioned in some other Elements guides, it does cover all the essentials and includes some useful tips and techniques.Comparisons with film camera and darkroom techniques will appeal to traditional photographers.

If you're new to Elements, this guide will give you a thorough grounding, but if you've been using Elements for some time and are looking for more advanced techniques then you'll probably find another book more interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to 3-D in various media.
When I had formed an interest in 3-D, I was looking for a book with coverage of 3-D movies. A friend of mine, who was a flea market dealer had a copy of 'Amazing 3-D' and traded it to me. What impressed me about this book was that the coverage was much more than 3-D movies. It includes chapters on stereo photography, 3-D comics, and a good general history of 3-D. This book was published in 1982 and is still considered by many 3-D enthusiasts to be the best general introduction to 3-D and reference to 3-D in comics and movies. The 3-D boom of the early eighties was kicked off by the 1981 movie "Comin' at Ya in 3-D". Dan Symmes, co-author of 'Amazing 3-D', was critical of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" calling it 'bad 3-D'. Of course those of us who saw and thoroughly enjoyed "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" were unaware that we were enjoying 'bad 3-D'. Frankly, it was an egotistical remark from someone who failed to realize that if it had not been for "Comin' at Ya in 3-D", this book would never had been published. It was then that the so-called 3-D experts proceeded to make their own 'good 3-D' movies and frankly bored the hell out of their audience thus killing interest in 3-D movies by the end of 1983. Symmes developed his own 3-D movie camera system which he called 'Dimension 3'. The subsequent company Dimension 3 converted polarized 3-D films to anaglyph 3-D (red/blue) for television broadcast and were also responsible for the conversion of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" to anaglyph for the DVD release. Their conversion process is also known as 'horrible 3-D' although they will tell you they are the only ones who know how to do 3-D right. Despite Symmes ego, he is one of the foremost experts in 3-D and sharing his knowledge of the subject certainly is a treat for anybody who is interested in 3-D in any of its various applications. [For anybody interested in 3-D movies, one of the better publications mostly dedicated to 3-D movies and especially those from the early eighties was an issue of Cinefantastique magazine: double issue vol. 13 no.6/vol. 14 no. 1, September 1983. You may be able to find this on the auction sites.]-Bob ... Read more
