Product Description
Intriguing early and scarce book by Dr. Kinsey written when he was Associate Professor of Zoology, and Waterman Research Associate at Indiana University. It is also the Advance Review Copy with the stamp affixed inside the front cover. There is a Preface "To The Student" and another "To The Teacher" and written by Dr. Kinsey. Chapters include the Seven Biologic Sciences: Taxonomy, Morphology, Physiology, Genetics, Ecology, Distributional Biololgy and Behavior. Dr Kinsey was a reknown Biologist and Sex Researcher. In 1937, he was recognized as an "American Man of Science"" although it wasn't until 1948 that Kinsey published the first of his two-part magnum opus, "Sexual Behavior of the Human Male" followed in 1953 by "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female". He died in 1956 at the age of 62. ... Read more

Product Description
A karyotype is the characteristic chromosome complement ofa eukaryote species. The term may also be used of a cell,or an individual. The preparation and study of karyotypesis part of cytogenetics. Karyogram of human male usingGiemsa staining. The basic number of chromosomes in thesomatic cells of an individual or a species is called thesomatic number and is designated 2n. Thus, in humans 2n =46. In the germ-line (the sex cells) the chromosome numberis n (humans: n = 23). So, in normal diploid organisms, autosomal chromosomes are present in two copies. There may,or may not, be sex chromosomes. Polyploid cells havemultiple copies of chromosomes and haploid cells havesingle copies. The study of whole sets of chromosomes issometimes known as karyology. The chromosomes are depicted(by rearranging a microphotograph) in a standard formatknown as a karyogram or idiogram: in pairs, ordered by sizeand position of centromere for chromosomes of the samesize. Karyotypes can be used for many purposes; such as, tostudy chromosomal aberrations, cellular function, taxonomicrelationships, and to gather information about pastevolutionary events. ... Read more

Product Description
Fungal world embodies diversified groups which colonize, multiply and survive in nature on many macro- and micro-ecological niches and substrates. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, filamentous or unicellular living organisms which are ubiquitous and cosmopolitan in distribution. Of the estimated 1.5 million fungal species, more than 98,000 fungal species have been described. Approximately 28,000 fungal species are reported from India. The fungi play an important role in biodegradation, recycling of organic matter, pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, medicine, industry, bioremediation, waste management and other activities. In India hardly we have database but for few a books on Indian fungi, compiled from time to time by some mycologists. The present book includes 16 chapters contributed by eminent mycologists. Chapters include data on diversity, taxonomy, ecology and application of Helicosporous fungi, genus Spegazzinia, Rusts and Smuts, Chaetomiaceae, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia, Russula, wild edible fungi, poisonous mushrooms, insect fungi and other related aspects. This book will be very useful and a valuable addition to the existing literature on the same subject.

Product Description
This volume had its origin in a symposium on theReproduction and Development of Cartilaginous Fishes thatwas held at the annual meetings of the American Elasmobranch Societyand the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists inCharleston, South Carolina in 1990. The cartilaginous fishes, classChondrichthyes, are a large and diverse group of fishes that includeapproximately 900 to 1100 living species of sharks, skates, rays andratfishes. Throughout their history, which dates back at least 400million years, they have been a successful major component of themarine ecosystem. The chondrichthyan fishes occupy a pivotal positionin comparative and evolutionary studies of vertebrate reproduction anddevelopment. They are the oldest surviving group of jawed vertebratesand they possess both the adult vertebrate Bauplan and the vertebrateprogram of embryonic development. The major features of the femalereproductive system, including its embryonic origin, structure, physiological function, and biochemistry, apparently were establishedearly in vertebrate evolution and are fully developed inchondrichthyan fishes. These features of the female reproductivesystem have been retained during the evolution of the other classes ofvertebrates. Much the same can be said for the male reproductivesystem. Moreover, viviparity, placental nourishment of developingembryos, and the hormonal regulation of these events made an initialappearance in this group. The 22 articles presented in this volumebring together a wide variety of complementary research byinvestigators from seven countries, allowing us to broaden the scopeand implications of our studies while identifying opportunities forfuture research. The appearance of a volume on the reproduction anddevelopment of cartilaginous fishes is quite opportune. The continuedexistence of these fishes, which survived the great extinction eventsof Earth's history, is now threatened by overexploitation unlessimmediate steps for their conservation are undertaken. Knowledge oftheir reproduction and development not only is an end in itself, butis of critical importance in devising successful conservation andresource management strategies.

Product Description
A mothis an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. The differences between butterflies and moths are more than just taxonomy. Sometimes the names "Rhopalocera" (butterflies) and "Heterocera" (moths) are used to formalize the popular distinction. Many attempts have been made to subdivide the Lepidoptera into groups such as the Microlepidoptera and Macrolepidoptera, Frenatae and Jugatae, or Monotrysia and Ditrysia. Failure of these names to persist in modern classifications is because none of them represents a pair of "monophyletic groups". The reality is that butterflies are a small group that arose from within the "moths" and there is thus no way to group all of the remaining taxa in a monophyletic group, as it will always exclude that one descendant lineage. There are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth, with thousands of species yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are crepuscular and diurnal species. ... Read more
