Product Description
This book examines Coalition of Essential Schools teachers who are in the midst of revising their practices to improve student performance. No longer satisfied with the kinds of compromises they've made for many years in high schools, these teachers are stirring their own most common practices to find better means to improved ends. Author Pat Wasley offers the reader five tales of teachers and their team-mates that illustrate the enormous task teachers face in reforming America's secondary schools. The book provides a detailed, close-up view of teacher's daily lives and their work with colleagues, students, and parents, including images of classroom activity, planning sessions and reflective interviews with teachers. This portrait allows readers to understand what teachers are doing to make school a place where students learn to use their minds well. The book also includes analyses of the most common changes teachers are making and of the most common challenges they encounter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prompting greater undersatnding of students'work
This is an excellent book to support facilitating the improvement in teaching and learning for all subjects across all levels. The authors have provided 3 protocols to review teacher and student work. The first encourages the group to look deeply at student's work, keeping in mind the presenting teacher's focus question. The book provides the facilitator with strategies to support the group to work through the protocol, asking questions to refocus the group's thinking, to guide the group to address the presenter's question and support the presenter through what can at times be an intimidating situation.
The second protocol allows the group to support the presenting teacher to 'fine tune' something they are working on, be it a project, an assessment rubric or task for students. The third protocol provides a forum is essential to allow a group to work through a problem the presenting teacher offers.
The book is easy to read with a large number of example questions that a facilitator may use in a variety of situations.I would recommend it for someone new to the facilitator role or a lead teaching who is trying to developing a greater sense of collegiality in PLTs.

1-0 out of 5 stars The author is a fool...
He uses secondary research - clearly none of his own - to draw his conclusions.

He is looking at the outcome of situations that were often decided in hearings by arbitrators, not trials, because the CHILDREN would have been irreparably damaged had their situations been made even more public than they already were.

As a child in a former case cited by this author, and knowing the true facts about a known predator and sexual molestor, I am appalled by the callous treatment assigned to the case by the author of this book.

As I said in the title of this review...clearly the author of this book IS A FOOL who did not do any primary research on people he is discussing.
