Product Description

For every 1,000 live births in Alaska, between 2.1 and 6.6 babies are affected by FAS--a rate 6 to 18 times higher than the national average. Fantastic Antone Succeeds!describes in concrete, specific ways how to educate children with fetal alcohol syndrome/fetal alcohol effects (FAS/FAE). It communicates an optimistic message that is both true and appealing: with the right education, delivered by a nurturing individual in the home or in the school, many alcohol-affected children thrive.

The book consists of separate chapters written in a popular and accessible style by psychologists, teachers, and birth and adoptive parents of alcohol-affected children. Many chapters are personal stories with emotional power. A birth mother, for example, tells of her anguish when she realizes that she has recovered from her own alcoholism but her daughter cannot. This mother describes how she dealt with her grief, how she told her daughter the truth, her daughter's relief at finally understanding what was wrong, and how they both developed ways of overcoming her daughter's learning problems.

Other chapters describe how experienced teachers have learned to organize classrooms where alcohol-affected children can thrive and how therapists have learned to work with parents. One chapter summarizes medical knowledge of FAS/FAE and offers information useful for understanding a child's learning and behavioral problems and devising educational approaches. The book includes lists of important resources, organizations to contact, and descriptions of effective classroom practices for teachers.

Without minimizing the seriousness of FAS/FAE and the first priority prevention, Fantastic Antone Succeeds provides practical tools and strategies that can help alcohol-affected individuals and their families lead happier, more productive lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up
Alot of our Society even the school teachers are unfamiliar with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which is sad. I believe every person that has anything to do with teaching or couseling should learn about this. I found this book to be very helpful as a special education teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for anyone who works with FAS children
...after reading countless books on ADHD...this book was the first thing that made any sense at all, and finally gave me the information I needed to get my stepson diagnosed properly at age 12....This book would be the quickest and best way, other than through years of living with someone with FAS, to try to understand the complexities of this condition.MOST people cannot understand it until they either have lived with it for years, worked with it for years, or at the very least read this book.Highly recommended.Dont raise, teach, or work with a FAS child and thier family without this kind of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any parent, caregiver with FAS/FAE children
On a personal level this book has been a godsend!.Our child was recently diagnosed with FAE and this book has been our bible. You can refer to any section of this book at any time for helpful information. From reading this book, I now see my child as a child with special needs and not as a monsterchild! . My child didn't ask to be born this way,it is not my child'sfault! . I see hope where once there was despair. I would love this bookto be part of all teachers curriculum! .

This is a wonderful positive book for parents and caregivers of FAS/FAE children.I have read so much negative and disheartening material on the subject of fetal alcohol syndrome which gave me little hope for the futurefor my son. This book gives me hope and guidelines for enhancing his life. The chapters written by other parents are especially helpful.I thank theauthors for their research and sincerity in their work. We, as parents, need assistance and guidelines in heading off some of the secondarydisabilities which often come with fetal alcohol syndrome. This bookoffers some real answers!I keep it on the kitchen table so I can refer toit often. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
This book is an extension of the material found in *Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:A Guide for Families and Communities* by Ann Streissguth.
Some of the topics:Secondary disabilites that can occur when diagnosis is later in life.ADULT FAS which is an entirely different set of problems and probably the part to which the public and the community are most resistant....this would include diagnosis, independent living and residential treatment situations. Medications for children with FAS.Classroom setups/situations that would aid a child with FAS.Judicial concerns for the person with FAS who has encountered problems with the law.Sexual deviancy. Treatment programs for mothers with addiction issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Report on Co-occuring Disorders
This book opens the door on FAS and co-occuring disorders. It is technical in a way, but I am not educated in social work or FAS specifically and it was not a difficult read.A must have in your Fetal Alcohol Syndrome library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - A GREAT and Understandable Resource Book!
Over 2 years ago we found out our adopted son (was our nephew) has Fetal Alcohol Effects. He is the child of a cocaine couple.Though Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the closest medical diagnosis, it does not quite describe him.

This book with the contrast it draws between Poly Drug Effected Children and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is exactly what we are living.

Anyone who has this horrible outcome in their day - to - day lives that needs a deeper understanding of their situation absolutely needs this book. We have shared it with a few professionals who have agreed it is a terrific resource.

It is also the most recently released book we have found and in this area of medical research the most recent is the absolute best.

We highly recommend this book! ... Read more
