3-0 out of 5 stars It is okay but lacks in some areas
Overall the book is good for people who need a starting point. It does not provide enough detail concerning how to use what they give you. The authors are also too selective in their process of identifying assessments for inclusion in their book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
With the expectations of RTI and tiered teaching, this book has proven to be a life-saver in identifying individual student weaknesses in an effort to keep them from falling through the cracks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand the diagnostician
This book provides a breakdown of what kind of assessments you can use to pinpoint problems in student's reading instruction. Good for understanding diagnostician's "jargon" sometimes. Puts everything in laymans terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Resource
Mather, Wendling, and Roberts have done a masterful job of creating this comprehensive resource for the assessment and remediation of the difficulties of the struggling writer. The authors use clear, accurate, and precise language to present overviews of the separate components of written language followed by techniques for informally assessing the difficulties the struggling writer reveals in his/her writing. They then follow this clear understanding of the problem with instructional plans that address the specific weaknesses. All of this is illustrated with real examples from real students. This is a must-have desk reference for all professionals and parents who work with developing writers. If I were Oprah, I would have the authors on the show and place this book under each seat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for teachers of writing!!
This book is an invaluable resource to anyone who is working with struggling writers. Not only does it address critical assessment questions in a clear and logical manner, but it also provides practical suggestions for intervention. Because the authors don't presume the reader has much background, this book is appropriate and useful to beginning teachers. However, because of the wealth of activites, the book is equally useful to experieinced instructors. It is a must-have for anyone who wants to assist struggling writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acclaim for Writing Assessment
In their book, Writing Assessment and Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities, the authors have provided a thorough approach to assessment and remediation for those students who find writing a formidable challenge. Not only does this text address the reason for referral question for psychologists, neuropsychologists, teachers and diagnosticians, it also takes on the important next step, answering the "so what?" or the "so what are we going to do about it?" question for remediation. It should have wide appeal to parents who home-school their children, parents who assist in their child's homework, regular education teachers in writing lesson plans and special education teachers who write goals and objectives in written expression. As a school psychologist with 35 years of experience, I find this text is a much needed resource that I will use and recommend for assessments and remedial strategies in my practice. As special educators, may we be forever mindful of the promise for struggling writers by the quote of Richard Bach: "A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit."
With every good wish, Marshall Andrew Glenn, Ph.D., NCSP, American Board School-Neuropsychology, Oklahoma City University

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for School Psychs and Special Educators Alike
Writing Assessment and Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities is a comprehensive and practical look at improving written language for all students. The instructional ideas cover every aspect of written language that a student may have difficulty with including handwriting, spelling, usage, vocabulary, and text structure. As a school psychologist, I find this text to be extremely useful in writing recommendations that are both realistic for classroom use and tailored to an individual student's needs. In addition, I found the chapters on assessment of writing to be especially helpful in taking my assessment of a student's skills beyond a Standard Score to a deeper level of analysis that pinpoints the areas in which a student struggles or excels the most.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who works with struggling writers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for every teacher's toolbox of resources
Mather, Wendling and Roberts have written an invaluable writing assessment and instruction resource manual for teachers. As a 20 year special education teacher, I often struggled with how to effectively and efficiently assess written language skills in my students to yield valuable information to inform instruction. As a university professor teaching assessment and intervention coursework to pre-service teachers, I prepare teachers who face the same dilemma in a context of increasing awareness of research-based interventions. Mather and her colleagues have developed a manual that guides K-12 teachers from the foundations of written language and handwriting, to assessment, accommodations, and research based interventions for students struggling with written language.Timely, informative, and accessible for undergraduate students and teachers alike - this book will be one of the required texts in my literacy assessment and intervention courses and is a must for every literacy teacher's toolbox of instructional resources.

Product Description
This book provides prospective and current teachers with a concise, non-technical and practical guide to conducting a full range of high-quality classroom assessments. The text emphasizes assessment in the context of the realities of teaching and teacher decision-making, as well as on how assessment is integrated with instruction. Assessment methods are integrated with instruction and presented according to when teachers evaluate students (before, during, and after an instructional unit) and the learning targets that are measured. There is considerable emphasis on the nature of learning targets and how different assessments are most appropriate for different targets. For each assessment technique, suggestions for effective practice are presented with examples and case studies. There are separate chapters on contemporary assessment techniques and issues, such as performance and portfolio assessments, as well as separate chapters on assessing affective targets and students with disabilities included in the regular classroom.A balance is provided with traditional forms of assessment and the need for teachers to administer, interpret, and use results from standards-based large scale assessments and other standardized tests. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This was one of the required books that I had purchased many years ago for my graduate studies in English.I remember finding it helpful as a new teacher in planning authentic assessment for my classes. The book explains various ways to assess students outside of the typical pen and paper style testing.Being a relatively new teacher myself at the time, it was a good book to explore different approaches to finding out a student's needs and knowledge.

The text is simple enough to read, and includes a description of possible activities for each of the language skills .There are short research justifications and references provided in the summary as well as a lot of examples to get new teachers started. Although many of the ideas can be applied to adult education, the examples are primarily for use in an ESL K-12 setting.Still, the book provides a good basis for new teachers to develop assessments in many situations.

Overall, I would recommend this book for teachers that are just starting out and have no idea about how to assess their students. Seasoned teachers that are looking for new ways to assess their students may also be intersted in this book.Adult educators and experienced teachers would probably find another book to be more beneficial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Assessment Ideas
Very informative and easy to follow. The reproducibles are great, and gave a lot of great ideas.I especially liked the self-assessment part and the writing assessment chapter - very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
This book is definitely a great resource to have as a teacher of ELL students. It covers all the areas necessary to provide better instruction.Lots of self-assessments to help students know where they are and where they need to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars easy read
This book is a fairly easy read. However, so far it has been more about authentic assessment than how to assess English Language Learners. Also, there are some editing mistakes that drive me crazy! This would be a good resource if you wanted to know about using portfolios or other forms of authentic assessment.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
The book was in good condition just as described.
The shipment took a little longer than I expected, but still in the range ofclaim.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Practicing Teachers
It seems that a lot of books in the market on testing deal with the theoretical background of designing large scale tests on the institutional level. Those sorts of books are not so useful for the practicing teacher who is looking for a little guidance on improving their test writing skills for daily classes. This book is written with that teacher in mind.It doesn't overload the reader with loads of statistics, but if you are interested in the statistical basis of the ideas presented in this book, there is a section on statistics in the appendix.

Basically, this book is divided into three sections. The first section covers the different types of test a teacher might want to give and the differences between those types. The second part delves into the theory of validity and realiability, but doesn't overwhelm the reader with loads of numbers and figures. The third part goes into how to test different skills. The attitude the author takes toward testing is that a test should focus on one of the four basic skills:speaking, reading, writing, or listening.Grammar and vocabulary, he claims, are not ends in themselves, but merely components of the four basic skills, so they don't need to be given much emphasis in testing.I thought that was an interesting idea.

If you're a teacher looking for a book to help you with your test writing skills, I can recommend this one. ... Read more

Product Description
Gregory MichieÂ’s first bestseller, Holler If You Hear Me, put him on the map as a compelling and passionate voice in urban education. In his new book, Michie turns his attention to young teachers of color, and once again provides readers with a unique and penetrating look inside public school classrooms. Featuring portraits of five young teachers (two African Americans, two Latinas, and one Asian American) who are "working for change," Michie weaves the teachersÂ’ powerful voices with classroom vignettes and his own experiences. Along the way, he examines what motivates and sustains these teachers, as well as what they see as the challenges and possibilities of public education ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars See you When You Get there Review
It's such a great book, I have to read it for class, but if it wasn't required to read, I would definitely read it on my own. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for teachers in urban schools
I have been blessed with the privilege of taking a class/workshop with Michie and am just as invigorated by this book as his class. This book profiles the experiences, both good and bad, appropriate and inappropriate of teachers in urban schools. From the beginning, Michie acknowledges and addresses criticisms of his previous writings as well as discusses his intellectual struggle with the fact the he is/was a middle-class white man teaching poor, urban children of color. He also recognizes that this book is written from his perspective and therefore is filtered through his eyes rather than the teachers (though he tried to free it from his personal reflection as much as possible and just "show" these teachers in real world situations). His goal is not to profile five "good" or "star" teachers, just five real teachers struggling to teach for change, struggling to help their students change their lives and worlds.
This book showed me that even "good" teachers (I think they're all good teachers in this book, but that's just me) screw up.Even good teachers have bad days. All urban teachers, particularly new teachers, especially ones who teach against the status-quo and push their students to think critically about everything they read about and learn about, sometimes fall. But they have moments of triumph as well. They have moments where students go above and beyond expectations, and moments where they see just how much these "ghetto" or "low-achieving" students know about their world.
This book gave me hope and ignited a new fire in me.I hope it inspires you just as much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for teachers and students
Michie is one of the few educators out there that consistently crafts his writing with such care, compassion, and insight.I really enjoyed reading this book.I think that as teachers we need to read our narratives and see them in a practical public forum, like Michie provides, instead of just an academic policy chart.Michie's writing is consistently reflectively and engaging.I highly recommend this book to anyone in the teaching profession, or the academic world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
This is the dumbest book I have ever had rammed down my throat. This book claimes to be advocating change to public, high-needs schools but all it really shows is the class envy of a bunch of mindless liberals. The problem with people like Michie is they have been away from the real classroom for too long. They get too involved in there higher education indoctrination that they forget what it is like to be a real public school teacher. Michie, like others who indoc higher ed., live in a dream world and they think their "progressive ideas" are going to improve public education when in fact all it does is put our children in deeper trouble. My warning to you is if you have to read this book keep in mind that there is a bias against anything with common sense. Just as important, "progressive ideas" will only make our children "feel good" and will never improve the quality of their education. Maybe Michie's next book will be "We lied to you. How liberal teacher education programs are out of touch and a waste of time." ... Read more

Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Opinion of Classroom Assessment Techniques
Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) is a great resource for K-12 teachers and university faculty. The authors provide a variety of quick, user friendly assessments to be used in minutes in order to assess student learning in a classroom environment. I used several with my university pre-service teachers. They were impressed and used them in their classrooms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful work
I was first introduced to this work while studying for my MS in Curriculum & Instruction at PSU.Although it is entitled "A Handbook for College Teachers," I have found applications for the assessment techniques at all levels that I have taught, ranging K-Adult Ed. This is also one of the most cited works on my assessment website: www.rubrics4assessment.net

5-0 out of 5 stars Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers
This is our second order of the book.It is used by our Tablet Users Group faculty members. We have had Thomas Angelo as a speaker at Rose-Hulman and were very pleased by him and his work. We would highly recommend Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers. The book has been very well received and helpful teaching, evaluating & assessing classroom techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classroom assessment
The book arrived in perfect condition, even though it was listed as used. Arrived on time.

4-0 out of 5 stars 50 CATs-- one WILL work for you
This book is a handbook-style text that elaborates on the concept of "Classroom Assessment Techniques," a term used by the authors to refer to alternative methods of evaluating or assessing student learning. The book is a handbook because each "CAT" is listed in terms of how to prepare, use, and evaluate results; the authors also present rather subjective indicants of the amount of time required for each technique.

The techniques range from the laughably simple (such as "muddiest point") to the more involved (such as student learning portfolios); the handbook is arranged in terms of types of assessment that may be conducted with each group of techniques. The book provides a wide variety of techniques, and the user should be able to find several applicable techniques for a particular educational situation.

However, I would strongly suggest that anyone using these techniques NOT rely on this text as the sole source of how and why to do educational assessment and evaluation -- the field is too complex and the implications are too important. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Formative Assessment
I don't know why this is tagged as "Science".Except for a couple of assessments that are specific to data analysis, this book is a gold mine of assessments that can be used in any classroom. The assessments can be done with few materials (no using your ticks to copy 150 worksheets!), are clearly explained and are relatively quick to use while still giving you clear feedback on what the students know. The assessments are varied enough that you can find ones that are great for the very beginning of the unit, in the middle and as the students approach mastery. What makes this book really worth the price, though, is the first few chapters where Keeley explains how best to use formative assessment and why formative assessment is so necessary for student learning. The other teacher who put me onto this book and I agree that we now have a much clearer understanding on the role formative assessment, when used deliberately, has on student achievement. This book should be required for all teachers--and the principals who are assessing them! (And seriously, don't skip the first chapters!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!
I *love, love, love* this book!I've taken it to many teacher conferences over the past two months, and others who have it have raved about it at all. This is a MUST HAVE for all science teachers, novice and veteran. If I was a science coordinator, I would buy it for all of the teachers in my department - it's just that good. Many of the assessments can be adapted for other content areas. If you're looking for a gift for a teacher, science or otherwise, this is a gift that will be used over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Formative Assessment
Excellent material with great ideas to implement with my students to help see how well they have learned a topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource!
I LOVE this book!We were not assigned a textbook for my General Methods class in my certification program, and I wanted a resource of my own as a "go to" guide for choosing different activities for my classes, and this is definitely the book to get!! Each activity listed in the book has a clear description, gives the rationale as to when and why you should implement each method, and even better HOW to implement it.I was so taken with this book that I brought it to class to share with my professor and classmates, and my professor even showed interest in purchasing it! If you're looking to (or already) teaching secondary science, in any content area, this is a book you should have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for science curriculum and instruction
As the curriculum and instructional director for our school district, I am always on the look-out for good materials. My science faculty have used this book since the first day I added it to my lending library. The feedback for implementation has been very good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Resource Worth Having
As an environmental educator I am always looking for new ways to express ecological concepts to children, as well as find evaluative techniques to track the learning of my students. This book introduces useful self-evaluative techniques to help the student track his learning and to chart the future course of inquiry.

Having been familar with George Hein(one of the book's coauthors) as one of the leading constructivist educators in non-traditional environments ( science centers, museums, nature centers, etc), I was interested in the text, and how I might apply it to the after-school enrichment program I am currently conducting.

The book has given me a few new tools to use in the evaluation of the students' learning, and some ability to incorporate those techniques/results in the final analysis to the grant committee, to prove to them that their money was well spent.

Admittedly, some of the techniques employed are better suited to smaller class sizes because of the time they will require to be fully reviewed and evaluated by the teacher.Nevertheless, even considering the added time component, the tools/techniques offered are worth employing because of the "buy in" the students gain in charting their learning/academic future.

Though you may not find every technique applicable to your classroom situation, you may find several that help you benchmark the progress of your students more usefully than standard testing, without completely "bucking the traditional system".

It's a good read, and worth the expense on an educator's budget.
