5-0 out of 5 stars Expert guide on managing teleworkers
Telework sounds simple. Let an employee work from home. Ensure that he or she has a desk, a computer and a working phone line. Ready, set, go; right? But what if the teleworker has an accident in the home office you authorized? Can your company get sued? What about the teleworker's tax status, workers' compensation or benefits? Of course, you might also wonder how you supervise a staffer you may never see, for example, someone who lives on the other side of the globe. Setting up employees in home offices is not as straightforward as it sounds. But, fortunately, Michael Amigoni and Sandra Gurvis phone in everything you need to know in this detailed yet comprehensive book. Drawing on their decades of experience managing remote workers, they present savvy advice on how to develop and run a successful telework program. If telecommuting is part of your company's future (or its present), getAbstract recommends this useful manager's manual. ... Read more

Product Description
This book “goes beyond the basics and…leaves no detail unmentioned when it comes to creating a successful telecommuting career,” says Gil Gordon, telecommuting pioneer and consultant, in this book's foreword.

Regular telecommuting is becoming a way of life for many employees. If you’re not careful, however, telecommuting can leave you out of touch with your workplace and manager. This book recognizes telecommuting’s pitfalls and shows you how to avoid them. It advocates that you become not just a good telecommuter, but a power telecommuter who accomplishes more, communicates better, and stays effective and visible when virtual.

Get expert guidance on all issues that telecommuters face. Here is a partial list of the many topics covered:
--Avoid the top 10 telecommuting traps
--Disarm telecommuting skeptics, including your boss and coworkers
--Master technology without becoming a technology geek
--What every home office needs—and doesn’t need
--10 time management tips you can use today
--Train yourself and your coworkers, boss, spouse, kids, pets, and neighbors
--Develop your telecommuting credibility
--Stay part of the team when working away
--Do’s and don’ts for effective communication with technology tools
--10 ways to stay on the corporate radar screen
--Earn superior performance reviews
--Signs that it’s time to visit the home office more often
--Career path strategies that work for telecommuters
--Tips for finding a telecommuting job
--Worksheets for scheduling and reporting your work, organizing your home office, and assessing your accomplishments
--Insight from industry pros on maintaining virtual relationships and handling the finer points of telecommuting
--Web resources for home office products and services, telecommuting associations, and additional information

“This book’s strength is in the countless tips, tricks, warnings, suggestions, and shortcuts that collectively mean the difference between being a telecommuter and thriving as a telecommuter,” writes Gil Gordon in the foreword.

Telecommuting Success is ideal for those who are currently telecommuting--or would like to. It also helps managers see the telecommuting employee's point of view. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on telecommuting
I recently reviewed a number of books on telecommuting and distance collaboration for a research center (...) and Dziak's book was the best I found on telecommuting.

While some other books dwell too much on details of home office setup (which this book does cover thoroughly in ch 4) Dziak is by far the most insightful about the real challenges of telecommuting, which are social issues of staying in touch. The book gives prescriptive advice in easily-digestable forms.Dziak is quite fond of top-10 lists, but manages to pack a lot of good content into this somewhat gimmicky format. My most-reference part of the book was his '10 Ways to stay on the corporate radar screen' (p. 181).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Guide You Will Need for Telecommuting
Michael Dziak's book is very thorough, and is a comprehensive guide on telecommuting. The check lists, forms, and practical tips are very usefull. This book offers so much for anyone operating a home office, it is a good investment even if they don't telecommute. I agree with other reviewers this is the desk companion or bible for telecommuters. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hitting Home
This is a good book. The design is very approachable, and the writing is quite readable - especially in an age when people would *like* to explore telework, but don't quite know where to begin. From Telework 101 to senior-exec-level concepts, it explains much of what today's teleworker - and even the at-home entrepreneur - needs to launch a fully-functional home office, without losing touch or professional stature with the corporate community.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power Telecommuter's How-To Manual
This book is a "must-read" for all potential, as well as current, teleworkers. It is packed full of tips and techniques for both the telecommuter and his/her employer. From setting up your home office to communicating with others, this book covers it all.I will keep this as a ready-reference.I recommend that all "driven knowledge workers" do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for the telecommuter.
Telecommuting Success is a great tool for the telecommuter. It is very easy to read and understand and gives tips that will help ensure that if you become a telecommuter you will be allowed to stay one.It shows you how to be successful and get the recognition for your work that you deserve, even if you are out of the office a good portion of the time. This is key to a successful teleworking relationship.

I highly recommend this book for any business that has or is implementing a telework program and would make it required reading for all teleworkers in that program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jeff Zbar has done it again
Jeff has long been an expert in the home office and telecommuting field so its little surprise that this book is a 'must read' for anyone looking to locate and hire productive teleworkers. One of the questions we receive most often at SOHOjobs is 'what do I need to set up a telework or telecommuting program' and this book is the answer. It covers keeping mobile workers and remote teams connected to the office, security issues and resources for the virtual workplace. There are even sample telework agreements that are very handy. For the job seeker, this book offers a handy Telework Aptitude Test to see if you're a candidate for remote work.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the stuff you don't know you need to know
To put it succinctly "Teleworking and Telecommuting" is a must-have guide to anyone considering either of these working paradigms. The author provides and extensive analysis of all the benefits and pitfalls of working from home.He covers the personal characteristics necessary for successfully working from home, home office furnishings, balancing problems with family life and work life when at home, strategies for getting the employer to accept the proposition of working from home, and many other things that are critical to your success but often overlooked when considering working from home. The book ends with four appendices that provide a teleworker aptitude test and three sample contracts.I've been involved in teleworking for some time where I spend some time at the office and some time elsewhere providing work product. This is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have read and so is a highly recommended read for anyone who is thinking of changing their work style to a teleworking paradigm or who is thinking of taking a job where teleworking is required or an option. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED the Work-at-Home Success Bible!!
Just finished the Work-at-Home Success Bible - LOVED it. It has the clearest directions I've seen on getting a home based business started. Step by step directions are so detailed that I believe anyone starting out will be headed in the right direction immediately. I'm going back to read the book again to get any details I may have missed! Glad I found this!!

5-0 out of 5 stars All the answers you need for working at home
This book covers it all--how to make the work at home life work for you and your family, business ideas, money management and the all-important business plan and marketing plan (two key items that are often overlooked). This is the kind of resource I wish I'd had when I was preparing my exit from corporate America (I left in 2003 and have never looked back!).

Over the years I've heard from many people who want to work at home and don't know where to start. There are a lot of scams out there and there can be some fear around making such a big transition. In my own experience, I've found that the fear is always minimized through preparation. The more you know about what you're getting yourself into, the less fear you will experience.

This is a practical book that will inspire ideas and give you the confidence to venture out on your own. Leslie Truex is a pro with a lot of knowledge to share. I'll be recommending this excellent book from now on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely written, easy to follow.
I picked up the The Work-at-Home Success Bible by Leslie Truex because one of the things that has been rolling around in my brain is how to take one (or more than one) of the Jack of All Trades things that I do and turn it into a salable commodity.

There are four parts to the book:

1. Living and Working at Home
2. Telecommuting
3. Home Business
4. The Business of Running a Business

An Appendix of helps is also included.

This too was a very readable book. The living and working at home wasn't especially helpful to me since I've got that experience in my past - those were short term assignments though, so if I decide to try to make a go at this, I may well have to revisit that section. She also includes forms (and links) to help anyone make this decision with enough information.

In the Telecommuting section, Leslie gives advice on how to find and apply for telecommuting jobs. Again, you have to have an idea of what you are good at. She also stresses that it's much easier to change a current job into a telecommuting job than it is to go out and find one.

In the Home Business section, Leslie talks about the variety of upstarts - including starting from scratch and lists quite a few business that any woman may have in her arsenal. This is the section I spent more time in weighing the options. Not done with that yet.

The last section gives advice on legalities, marketing, communication, etc. All the stuff to make the business tick after making the decision to start it.

She also lists her web site (Work-at-Home Success) multiple times, and says she has forms to use there, but I haven't looked closely enough to find them yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Work-At-Home Resource!
This is an excellent work-at-home resource that allows readers to see through the smoke screens of the phoney offers vs the real offers. The author, Leslie Truex, has a firm handle on the work-at-home scene.Ms. Truex's book teaches the reader how to tell whether a work-at-home opportunity is a trash or a treasure. It's a MUST-READ for all those who are truly serious about starting a work-at-home business.

Telecommuting by any name: telework, mobile work, home offices, virtual employees, or telematics, is one of the most intriguing and least understood results of advances in portable computing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I happen to have a state job that would never qualify me for telecommuting, but I got the book anyway just for kicks. Now, I am envious! The author did an excellent job of laying out the ways to convince your boss that working at home can be beneficial for all.It won't help me, but who knows, perhaps this book can be your ticket to satisfactory home employment!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book convinced my boss to let me telecommute.
With the help of Telecommuting for Dummies I was able to convince my boss to let me work from home 3 days a week.I was traveling 1 1/2 hours each way to work previously and taking care of three kids and my life was hell. Now I work in my home office and am home when the kids get back from school. The book outlined a strategy I could use with my boss and it actually WORKED!I amnow a happy camper. The book has lots of other good info about telecommuting, like how to separate your home and work life when you work at home, and how to organize your time and your office.I can't recommend it too highly! It's incredibly helpful!!

3-0 out of 5 stars An adequate reference book
I purchased this book last week.I found a few of the sections lacking (I wanted much more information). For instance her section on telecommuting scams only warranted about two pages.

I found that the first few chapters of the book was very similar in organization and content to an e-book I purchased about two years ago by another author on the topic of telecommuting, Rosalind Mays -- this was very disturbing.

However this author's in-sights on "office politics" and the equipment and technical side of telecommuting was very eye-opening and should be carefully considered by anyone wishing to telecommute or work from home in any capacity.

It's a good reference for people that "already" have a telecommuting job and want to keep it. This is an author I would purchase from again. ... Read more

If so, consider getting The Underground Guide toTelecommuting, one of the livelier and more irreverent guides to telecommuting. I've telecommuted on-and-off since 1989, so I can honestly saythat Leonard discusses most of the important bases: setting up a good workspace, establishing reliable telecommunications, and, most importantly, dealing with zoning boards, thepostal service, bosses, your neighbors, and even the IRS.

As an interesting aside, I was struck by the playful, andconversational writing style of this book.I have often noted that people's writing changeswhen working from home - in part because of the greater freedom, sleepdeprivation from enjoying working too much -- and not having anyone totalk to! ...
