4-0 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Collection
What a pleasure this book is.Like the best short story collections, it contains such variety that you can be sure of finding something that speaks particularly to you.I especially enjoyed Alana White's "The Cloths of Heaven," but it is only one of many possible examples. There is writing here about the old south, the new south, the travails of a writer's tour--there is even a ghost story.Southern writers have been famous for their love of pure language. In this collection it is clear that that tradition, thankfully, endures. ... Chapters: Johnson City, Tennessee. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 66. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Wars of the Roses were a series of dynastic civil wars between supporters of the rival houses of Lancaster and York, for the throne of England. They are generally accepted to have been fought in several spasmodic episodes between 1455 and 1485 (although there was related fighting both before and after this period). The war ended with the victory of the Earl of Richmond, Henry Tudor, who founded the House of Tudor, which subsequently ruled England and Wales for 117 years. Some revisionists, such as influential Oxford historian K.B. McFarlane, suggest that the conflicts during this period have been radically overstated, and that there were, in fact, no Wars of the Roses at all. Henry of Bolingbroke had established the House of Lancaster on the throne in 1399 when he deposed his cousin Richard II. Bolingbroke (who was crowned as Henry IV) and his son Henry V maintained their hold on the crown, but when Henry V died, his heir was the infant Henry VI, who grew up to be mentally unstable and dominated by quarrelsome magnates. The Lancastrian claim to the throne descended from John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III. Henry VI's inability to rule the Kingdom ultimately resulted in a challenge to his right to the crown by Richard, Duke of York, who could claim descent from Edward's third and fifth sons, Lionel of Antwerp and Edmund of Langley, and had also proved himself to be an able administrator, holding several important offices of state. York quarrelled with prominent Lancastrians at court and with Henry VI's queen, Margaret of Anjou, who feared that he might later supplant her son, the infant Edward, Prince of Wales. Although armed clashes had occurred previously between sup...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=33975 ... Read more

Excerpt: Norris Dam State Park is a state park in Anderson County and Campbell County, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. The park is situated along the shores of Norris Lake, an impoundment of the Clinch River created by the completion of Norris Dam in 1936. The park consists of 4,038 acres (16.34 km) managed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The park also administers the Lenoir Museum Complex, which interprets the area's aboriginal, pioneer, and early 20th-century history. Norris Dam was the pilot project of the Tennessee Valley Authority, a Great Depression-era entity created by the United States government in 1933 to control flooding and bring electricity and economic development to the Tennessee Valley. The construction and administration of the dam and reservoir would serve as a model for over two dozen other TVA dams built throughout the Tennessee Valley in subsequent decades. Along with Norris Dam State Park, there are several protected entities along Norris Lake's shores, including Big Ridge State Park, Chuck Swan State Forest, Cove Creek Wildlife Management Area, and River Bluff Small Wild Area. Norris Dam State Park was named for Nebraska senator George William Norris (1861-1944), who lobbied intensively for the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority in the early 1930s. Chapters: Bus Transportation in Tennessee, Passenger Rail Transport in Tennessee, City of New Orleans, Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority, Memphis Area Transit Authority, Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, Knoxville Area Transit, City of Memphis, Kingsport Area Transit System. Excerpt: The City of New Orleans is a nightly passenger train operated by Amtrak which travels 926 miles (1,490 km) between Chicago, Illinois and New Orleans, Louisiana. Before Amtrak's formation in 1971, the train was operated by the Illinois Central Railroad along the same route (though changes have been made since then). The train currently operates on a 19½ hour schedule. Within Illinois the City of New Orleans shares a route also served by a daily morning train, the Saluki, and a daily afternoon train, the Illini. The Illini and Saluki terminate at Carbondale, Illinois. The City of New Orleans began life as the daytime companion train to the all-Pullman car Panama Limited that also traveled the IC's mainline from New Orleans, Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois. The daytime train was significantly cheaper. This train was a major part of the large migration of African Americans from the U.S. South during the early 20th century, as it was one of the cheaper transportation options available. When Amtrak assumed operation of U.S. passenger train service on May 1, 1971, the train's Chicago-New Orleans service was initially operated as the City of New Orleans on the traditional daytime schedule. Because this train made no connections with other trains at either New Orleans or Chicago, the City of New Orleans was replaced by the Panama Limited on November 14, 1971. In 1974 the name of this overnight schedule was changed back to the City of New Orleans, largely du... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=498214 ... Read more

Excerpt:The now-submerged site of Zimmerman's Island, where ancient Chiaha was locatedChiaha was a horticultural Native American chiefdom located in the lower French Broad River valley in modern East Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. They lived in raised structures within boundaries of several stable villages, which themselves overlooked their fields of maize, beans, squash, and tobacco, among other plants. Chiaha was the northern extreme of the Coosa chiefdom's sphere of influence in the 1500s when the Spanish expeditions of Hernando de Soto and Juan Pardo passed through the area. The Chiaha chiefdom included parts of modern Jefferson County and Sevier County, and may have extended westward into Knox County, Blount County and Monroe County. The Spanish explorers' accounts of Chiaha provide a rare first-hand glimpse of life in a Dallas Phase Mississippian-era village. The Dallas culture, named after Dallas Island near Chattanooga where its distinct characteristics were first observed, dominated much of East Tennessee between approximately 1300 and 1600 A.D. Both the de Soto and Pardo expeditions spent several days at Chiaha's principal village, and the Pardo expedition even constructed a fort nea...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18322111 ... Read more
