Product Description
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, thousands of black and white southerners left farms and rural towns to try their fate in the region's cities. This transition brought about significant economic, social, and cultural changes in both urban centers and the countryside. Focusing on Nashville and its Middle Tennessee hinterland, Louis Kyriakoudes explores the impetus for this migration and illuminates its effects on regional development.

Kyriakoudes argues that increased rural-to-urban migration in the late nineteenth century grew out of older seasonal and circular migration patterns long employed by southern farm families. These mobility patterns grew more urban-oriented and more permanent as rural blacks and whites turned increasingly to urban migration in order to cope with rapid economic and social change.

The urban economy was particularly welcoming to women, offering freedom from the male authority that dominated rural life. African Americans did not find the same freedoms, however, as whites found ways to harness the forces of modernization to deny them access to economic and social opportunity. By linking urbanization, economic and social change, and popular cultural institutions, Kyriakoudes lends insight into the development of an urban, white, working-class identity that reinforced racial divisions and laid the demographic and social foundations for today's modern, urban South. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Migration and Social Change.
In this revised dissertation, the author suggests that migration tranformed the rural countryside of Middle Tennessee. With the breakdown of the traditional farm, various social, economic, and familial changes occurred, contributing to a great "outmigration" from the rural "Hinterlands" to urban Nashville.Progressives, though hoping to dispel the influx of migrants, instituted a series of reforms--namely, school reforms and road construction--that actually encouraged migration. The aim was far short of the mark.

Hoping to keep would-be migrants in the country, the aim was to give people better education and transportation routes, thereby quelling their need to move to the city (Nashville, in this case).Failing to address the root cause of the migration, city officials were inundated with an immense population that often faired no better than they had in the countryside.Blacks generally faired worse than whites (regardless of gender), while whites (particularly white women) often managed at least slightly better.

As Kyriakoudes makes clear, the breakdown of the rural community coupled with the introduction of urban values in the countryside left many without much avenue for advancement.Moving, says the author, was equated with poverty. To stay confined within an unpromising, if familiar, area was something many younger adults chose to leave behind.

Though I believe some of the evidence is wholly lacking, regarding black migrants especially, his conclusions are not exaggerated. The overall form of the dissertation makes for oft-times redundant reading, though holds up well until the later chapters. Disappointments are few; however, the explicit linking of the Grand Ole Opry in the beginning as a veritable "medicine for urban change" that occurred quickly disappears, not to return in the work. That interesting aspect should have been explored further in the text. Incorporating gender and race within the larger narrative (and not altogether successfully), the author breaks down the migratory patterns from rural to urban, thereby forging an "urban South." ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Tennessee," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Tennessee in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Tennessee when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Tennessee, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
