Excerpt: 2005 Atlantic hurricane season Impact Relief Analysis Other wikis In late August 2005 there were over 50 failures of the levees and flood walls protecting New Orleans, Louisiana, and nearby St. Bernard Parish during Hurricane Katrina. The levee and flood wall failures caused flooding in 85% of New Orleans and 100% of St. Bernard. Millions of gallons of water spilled into vast areas of New Orleans, flooding thousands of homes and businesses with 10 feet or more of water. Five investigations (three major and two minor) were conducted by civil engineers and other experts, in an attempt to identify the underlying reasons for the failure of the federal flood protection system designed and built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. To date, the studies disagree on the mechanisms of the levee failures. Fault has been aimed at the Corps of Engineers, their local contractors, and local levee boards.. Storm surge caused breaches in 20 places on the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal ("MR-GO") flooding the entire Saint Bernard Parish and the East Bank of Plaquemines Parish. Three major breaches occurred on the Industrial Canal; one on the northeast side near the junction with Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and two on the southeast side along the Lower Ninth Ward, between Florida Avenue and Claiborne Avenue. On the east side of New Orleans the 17th Street Canal levee breached 4 feet (1.2 m) below design specs on the New Orleans side near the Old Hammond Highway Bridge. The London Avenue Canal breached in two places, near Robert E. Lee Boulevard, an...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2970817 ... Read more

Excerpt: Douglas Todd Staples (born August 24, 1963) is the current Commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture and a member of the Republican Party. Prior to his election as Agriculture Commissioner, he was a member of both houses of the Texas State Legislature and a member of the city council in Palestine, Texas. Staples was unopposed for renomination in the GOP primary held on March 2, 2010. In the general election set for November 2, he faces the populist Democrat Hank Gilbert, his original statewide opponent from 2006. Gilbert in his primary defeated Richard S. "Kinky" Friedman, who was an Independent gubernatorial candidate in 2006. Friedman, who said he will not again seek public office, has pledged to support Gilbert in the bid to unseat Staples. Staples grew up in Palestine (pronounced PAL ES STEEN), the seat of Anderson County in East Texas. He graduated from Palestine High School where he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America. While in college, he served as state vice-president of the FFA from 19811982. Chapters: Gun Barrel City, Texas. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 122. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Gun Barrel City, Texas -Despite having a name that evokes images of the Texas Frontier, Gun Barrel City is only forty years old. Not long after Cedar Creek Lake (a reservoir for the Tarrant Regional Water District) completed construction, the fledgling community that sat on its banks took steps to officially become a city. Gun Barrel City was incorporated on May 26, 1969. Since that time, Gun Barrel City has grown into the central hub and access point for the waters of Cedar Creek Lake. This has led visitors from around the region to use Gun Barrel City as the gateway into the lake. In addition to the high amount of tourism that the community witnesses (particularly during the summer boating season), Gun Barrel City and the surrounding communities have experienced a residential building boom over the past several years. This growth has largely been led by the relocation of wealthy retirees from throughout the Dallas region, building large lake homes in order to take advantage of Gun Barrel City's lake access. In 2000, Gun Barrel City elected a 21-year-old mayor, Tye Thomas, who became a media and political celebrity in the Dallas metropolitan area. After he resigned in 2001, he and the community were featured in various publications and programs, including a story on the popular national radio program This American Life. In 2008, Gun Barrel City received the coveted Certified Retirement Community recognition from the Texas Department of Agriculture's Go Texan program. The community has also received recognition from the Governor's Office, receiving second place on two separate occasions in the Governor's Community Achievement Awards. Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Randolph Air Force Base (Randolph AFB) is a base of the United States Air Force located in Universal City, Texas, near San Antonio. Dedicated June 20, 1930, as a flying training base, it continues with that mission today. The base is named after Captain William Millican Randolph, a native of Austin who was on the base naming committee at the time of his death in a crash. It serves as headquarters of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) as well as the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) and is known as "the Showplace of the Air Force" because of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture in which all structures including hangars were constructed. The symbol of the base is a large water tower atop Building 100, housing the 12th Flying Training Wing (12 FTW) headquarters, known throughout the Air Force as "the Taj Mahal" or simply "The Taj". An AETC unit, the 12 FTW is the host wing for Randolph. ... Read more
