Excerpt: Muldoon, Texas -Muldoon was named after Father Michael Muldoon, a clergyman who briefly served Stephen F. Austin's first colonists. He was the only non-Hispanic member of the Monterrey, Mexico Diocese and was probably assigned his duties since he spoke English. He was born in County Cavan in Ireland but was ordained in Spain. He returned to Mexico, visited Stephen Austin during his 1834 confinement and also assisted William Wharton in his escape from a Matamoros prison in 1837. He also discovered Wharton, Texas . Muldoon was openly pro-Texan, which led to a brief imprisonment. He made an appearance back in Texas in 1842 when he was given a letter of appreciation from Anson Jones. After that Father Muldoon disappeared from history and his final resting-place is unknown. Muldoon has a Kerr Stone built in 1890 before the road Kerr Street was named. Not to be confuse with Kerrville, Texas 210 miles away.. The Union Pacific Railroad also goes through Muldoon on FM 154 every day. Muldoon has hot summers and mild winters. The record high was 111°F in 1917. The coldest temperature was 3°F in 1989. Muldoon rarely has tornadoes except one in the 1910s which injured 3 people. (See Tornado Below) Muldoon's weather data are shown in a graphical format to the right, and in a more detailed tabular format below. Muldoon is served by the Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department which was formed in 2009. In, 2010 the MVFD saved 51 lives. Though bigger than the neighboring town Cistern, Texas, it only has a post office, a baptist church, and a Volunteer Fire Department. Muldoon is especting to get a police department in 2011 or 2012 In the middle of July, the Muldoon Baptist Church does a summer school from ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16852502 ... Read more

Excerpt: Mission Valley is an area of El Paso, Texas, USA which includes part of Eastside and all Lower Valley districts. It is the third largest area of the city, behind East El Paso and Central El Paso. Hawkins Road and Interstate 10 border the Mission Valley. This location is considered the oldest area of El Paso, dating back to the late 17th century when present-day Texas was under the rule of Nueva España (New Spain). In 1680 the Isleta Pueblo tribe revolted against the Spaniards who were pushed south to what is now El Paso. Some Spaniards and tribe members settled here permanently. Soon afterward, three Spanish missions were built; they remain standing, currently functioning as churches:Ysleta Mission-1682 (La Misión de Corpus Christide San Antonio de la Ysleta del Sur/Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), Socorro Mission-1759 (Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepción del Socorro)-1759 and San Elizario Chapel (Capilla de San Elcear)-1789. On April 30, 1598, the northward-bound Spanish and New World Spanish conquistadors crossed lage sand dunes about 27 miles south of present-day Downtown El Paso. It is said that the expeditionaries and their horses ran toward the river, and two horses drank themselves to death. Don J...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5317548 ... Read more

Excerpt: Wildorado, Texas -Wildorado is located along FM 809 just south of Interstate 40, east of the city of Vega, the county seat of Oldham County. The nearest large city is Amarillo, located approximately 20 miles east of Wildorado. Wildorado's elevation is 3,921 feet (1,195 m) Named for nearby Wildorado Creek, the community was founded in 1900 as a railway town along the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railroad. It was first settled by Eugene Binford and John R. Goodman, who ranched in the area before 1900. A post office was established in 1904. In 1908, the railroad was completed and a town site was laid out.. Goodman organized the Wildorado State Bank and built the Wildorado Hotel. A newspaper, the Wildorado Progress, began publication in 1909. By 1915, Wildorado had an estimated population of 100. During the 1920s and 1930s, the community endured droughts and dust storms. In 1936, Wildorado had a population of 57 with seven businesses. That figure increased to around 125 residents in the late 1940s. The gradual evolution of the Ozark Trail (Route 66) into Interstate 40 encouraged growth. After World War II, when travel became a popular past time, Wildorado responded with services along its portion of Route 66 and the population rose to over 200 by the late 1950s. The formation of the Wildorado Water Supply Corporation in 1976-77 ensured a rural water supply and irrigation wells. During the latter half of the twentieth century, the population hovered around 180. Although Wildorado is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 79098. Public education in the community of Wildorado is provided by the Wildorado Independent School District. The district has a single campus, W...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18849770 ... Read more

Book Review: Toxic Plants of Texas and Brush & Weeds of Texas Rangelands
By Sheri Hansen

If you've ever looked down at a weed growing on your property and thought "what IS that?", the Texas AgriLife Extension has two resources you can use. Not only do these books, published by Texas A&M University Press, help land managers identify weed species, they also provide direction and advice on control options.

"It all starts with proper identification. If you can't identify a plant, you can't implement an effective management strategy," says Charles Hart, Professor and Texas Extension Range Specialist. "That is why we wrote Toxic Plants of Texas and Brush & Weeds of Texas Rangelands."

Although the books reference vegetation found across Texas, many of the species and the control options are relevant to states across the Southern and Western U.S. The books detail more than 400 invasive weeds including mesquite, juniper, prickly pear, Chinese tallowtree, saltcedar and giant reed as well as discuss well-tested methods that can be used to control unwanted weeds across the region.

"Looking at pictures of plants from different areas can help you get a broader frame of reference for what a plant might look like in different habitats," Hart said. "This is great for identifying weeds in different regions and adapting vegetation control plans for a variety of areas."

Toxic Plants of Texas is an important guide for livestock owners, as it helps match livestock illnesses with common toxic plant species.

"As a livestock owner you need to know how to recognize the clinical signs of an animal that has ingested a toxic plant and understand the treatment methods," Hart says. "But livestock owners can actually protect animals from getting sick in the first place, with simple weed identification and management tactics. Applying strategies to prevent poisonings can reduce potential livestock losses before it even becomes an issue."

Brush & Weeds of Texas Rangelands complements the Chemical Weed and Brush Control: Suggestions for Rangeland (B-1466) herbicide recommendation guide published by Texas AgriLife Extension Service, which suggests herbicides for controlling brush and weeds, and can help in the development of a brush management program.

"Brush & Weeds of Texas Rangelands provides a description, identifying characteristics, the geographic distribution and a habitat description of each species, along with color photographs of the plant and its distinguishing features," Hart said. "It's great when coupled with the B-1466; we call it the bible for recommended herbicide treatments for Texas noxious and invasive species."

Jim Crosby, BASF Sales Representative, has years of experience battling weeds in Texas and fully supports the Extension's role in furthering weed education.

"Texas AgriLife Extension Service is a nationally recognized leader in providing educational resources for land managers and advancing weed science in Texas," Crosby said. "For our customers, we recommend using university experts for the research that forms a foundation for control solutions, and the data compiled here is a great example of that kind of work."

3-0 out of 5 stars Texas One Nation
This very thin book is appropriate for elementary school students, no higher than the 4th grade.
The first chapter inexplicably starts with Texas music. I recommend chapters start with The Land, The People, Texas History and then cover culture, music and facts. A picture of the beautiful State Capitol
would be a nice addition also. The discussion of Texas History and the sights was good, including the pictures of the famous Alamo and the associated battle. A few more pictures of the various cities, oil
derricks, the Big Bend National Park and the San Jacinto Monument would add a lot of color and make the
book much more interesting to 3rd and fourth grade readers. ... Read more
