Very informative!
As a teacher in Texas and a lover of Texas history, this is the perfect read.The book basically is an in-depth study of rural Texas schools around 1900-1930.The key word here is detail.You really get to understand all aspects of the old one and two room schoolhouses- curriculum, construction, politics behind the locations of the schools, etc.As with all of this author's works, the best parts are the little human details- pranks the students played on each other, the food they ate, funny things that happened at recess, games the students played, and the pride the community took in the school's success.The end of the book, where everything is consolidated and the small community schools are closed down, is downright sad.I'd highly recommend this book. ... Fifty years ago Abilene High School, under legendary Coach Chuck Moser, became a football dynasty in Texas.

Moser moved to Abilene in 1953 at age thirty-four. What followed were seven of the most amazing years in the rich history of Texas high school football. The 1954, 1955, and 1956 teams won state championships. From 1954 to 1957 the Eagles won an incredible forty-nine consecutive games. Abilene captured six district titles in a row in a rugged West Texas league known as the Little Southwest Conference. In Moser's seven years, Abilene won seventy-eight games and lost only seven.

In its 1999 wrap-up of the twentieth century in Texas, The Dallas Morning News designated the Eagles of 1954-57 as the "Team of the Century" in high school football.

Well documented and entertaining book about Texas High School Football
This book is a great example of what coaching kids into men is all about. Each page is filled with the wonderful account of how the right guy in the right situation is capable of greatness.

Great book about the Abilene TX football team.My brother is one of the players on the front cover. Recommend highly!

Lone Star State
These boys here are real poop kickers. Even though they're wearing cleats, and not boots, they still kick some serious poop. No team kicked more poop in Texas than these guys. Except maybe the Dallas Cowboys, but we're talking high school poop kicking, not professional poop kicking. If you're good enough, you CAN kick poop professionally in Texas - most Texans do just that actually - but we're focusing on teenage poop kickers for the purposes of this review.

Rookie Reader - Texas
We are a homeschooling family and are currently doing a study of the states.I am always happy to be able to find books that my struggling 3rd grade son is able to read and enjoy.I believe the books in this series have accomplished that.We have enjoyed the books in this series very much.

Most of the states I've been able to request through ourlibrary system.This particular one was not available but since my husband is from Texas I wanted to make this one available to our son.So I purchased this one.

Through our local library and a few other purchases my son has read many of the books in this series.Not just in Geography but many others in the Rookie Read About Science/Health/Math/Holidays books that are also available.

I think even if the child is not a struggling reader these are still good, informative and interesting books. ... Read more
