Product Description
Mai Ya’s Long Journey by Sheila Cohen is the first book in the new Wisconsin Historical Society Press Badger Biography series designed for upper elementary and middle-school readers that explores the stories of Wisconsin people. Mai Ya’s Long Journey relates the personal story of Mai Ya Xiong and her family. Their journey from the Ban Vinai refugee camp in Thailand to a new life in Madison, Wisconsin, is extraordinary, yet typical of the stories of the two hundred thousand Hmong people who now live in the United States and who struggle to adjust to American society while maintaining their own culture as a free people. The author, who has known Mai Ya since she was a student in her seventh-grade ESL (English as a Second Language) class, brings her personal perspective to this compelling story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true story of a young Hmong girl and her family's journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to life in Wisconsin
This true story of a young Hmong girl and her family's journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to life in Madison, Wisconsin was written by the child's ESL teacher.Mai Ya Xiong, now 25 years old and her family's first college graduate, spent her first seven years trapped in Thailand after her parents narrowly escaped from Laos. Her father had fought against Communists in a secret army developed by the United States Central Intelligence Agency.Life in Wisconsin challenged the young immigrant girl to keep a balance between her Hmong culture and American ways. The biography includes a concise look at Hmong animist beliefs, traditions and customs that date back 5,000 years. Photographs of Mai Ya growing up illustrate her story and corroborate an already authentic account. Mai Ya Xiong exemplifies the "can-do" attitude Americans have come to revere in our immigrant stories. The book, complete with timelines, glossary, index, appendix and reading group guidelines, enables students to experience Mai Ya's contemporary journey in its historical context.

Description:
In the wake of the AIDS crisis, 'traditional' Thai medicine has received new attention as a means by which people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) can receive some level of care. The revitalization of Thai medicine, however, is complicated by the competing organizational politics and social dynamics that regulate discourses and practices of health and health care in Thailand. This paper examines how Thai medicine is being (re)placed in the context of competing health-care systems and practices. Specifically, this analysis focuses on the complex interrelationships between 'traditional,' holistic medicine and 'modern,' allopathic medicine in a Thai context; and investigates the role of 'Thai medicine' (phaet phaen thai) and 'village medicine' (phaet pheun baan) as part of governmental and non-governmental efforts to provide health care to PLWHA in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The provisioning of such health care, however, takes place within the context of a struggle over 'local knowledge' and 'global change' and the ways in which places are organized in relation to the available treatment regimens for HIV/AIDS care. What this paper suggests is that the meanings of health and health care are inextricably linked to the complex, contested nature of social relations as they flow in, and are reworked through, particular places. ... Excerpt: Thailand competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. With three gold and eight medals altogether, it was the best ever performance of Thai athletes at any Olympic Games. Women's 100 metre hurdles: Women's High Jump: Women's Shot Put: Thailand had never won a medal in Olympic Badminton, and it seemed like their best chance to change that in Athens lay with the mixed doubles team, which was fifth-seeded. However, they lost their first match to a Swedish team, including a hard-fought 31-point second set. No other Thai entrant came into the tournament ranked in the top 10, but world #21 Boonsak Ponsana pulled off a surprise run in the men's singles. After easing through his first match, Ponsana beat the 5th seed from Korea in a tough, hour-long match. With the elimination from his quarter of the top seed, Lin Dan, Ponsana then advanced to the semi-final, where his run ended, as he lost two consecutive matches to Indonesian opponents to end up in 4th. The bronze medal match was a straight sets loss, but was more than an hour long, and featured a 33-point second set. Men's Singles: Men's Doubles: Women's Singles: Women's Doubles: Mixed Doubles: Of the nine medals Thailand had won at the Olympics Games coming into Athens, eight had been in Boxing, so it is no surprise that it was among the Thais most successful events in the 2004 Games. The six Thai boxers in Athens included the first Thai Olympic gold medalist (Kamsing), a world champion (Jongjohor) and three Asian Games medallists (Pannon, Boonjumnong and Prasathinphimai). Somluck Kamsing was the first to go down, losing his first round bout handily. Next was Pannon, beaten by the eventual gold medalist from ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=927794 ... Read more

Product Description
This book investigates how ethnic communities in Northern Thailand perceive problems and benefits of local participation in the tourism planning process. It also explores how inhabitants perceive the general impacts of tourism development. In particular, problems associated with tourism development in terms of its impacts on ethnic communities, as understood by the local residents involved, are identified. One factor suggested by the results is that such impacts are in part a result of both insufficient and ineffective participation of local residents in tourism planning. Conflicts of interest between policymakers and villagers were the most critical concern needing capable institutional governance for sustaining resources in the region. This book also suggests a new ethical framework for future planning of the region. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Asia on Internet Time
I love the Rough Guides, Moon Guides, and Lonely Planet. The only problemis, they often assume you're going for 3 weeks or 6 months. I can seldomget away for more than 8-10 days at a time. Fodor's doesn't just dump a lotof destination info on you. They help you prioritize by listing"must-see" sights and presenting multiple alternative itinerariesfor trips of different lengths, etc.

Last December, Fodor's SE Asia guidehelped me figure out that the Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore odyssey we wantedjust wouldn't fit comfortably into 10 days. So we postponed that trip untilsomeday when we have at least 2 or 3 weeks. Instead, we simply flew intoBangkok and immediately booked a 3-day Phnom Penh/Angkor tour. In all, wedid 3 days each in Cambodia and Bangkok and 4 days in Tokyo. It was afabulous trip.

This time I'm using Fodor's Japan, together with the Moonand Rough Guides (and of course the Internet), to plan a 10-day solo tripto Hokkaido. From Fodor's I get the highlights, along with a good idea ofwhat I can expect to fit into 10 days. From the other two I get obscure(but equally important!) details, such as the fact that the little farmingtown of Furano (not mentioned in Fodor's) gets a lot of Japanese touristsbecause it was the setting for the long-running TV drama Kita no Kuni Kara(From the North Country). I've only seen a few early episodes of that show, but it's enough that now I want to see Furano too.

To sum up, I useFodor's as my starting point, then read other guides to get extra details.I've done 2 Asia trips this way, and I'll be doing the 3rd one very soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars A concise and easy-to-use guide
As Fodors does like no one else, this pleasing digestible guidebook gives practical information to the traveller for an incredibly large and diverse region.A great starting point for trip planning in southeast Asia. ... Read more
